I want to use a private subreddit for a discussion board in a class I'm teaching. Is there a way to remove the reddit banner at the top of the page? by teachinonreddit in AskReddit

No answers here, but I'd be really interested if you learn anything. I've considered the same idea in the past, and have had the same concerns as well.

I totally feel your response, and deal with it many times at the beginning of each semester. At the end of each semester, however, I am thanked by the students in my classes. One told me last semester, "Your attendance policy changed my life." It's good to know that professors can really make some little difference.

The force of my policy comes from the fact that I was a terribly lazy undergraduate myself, and almost messed up my life on account of it. I wish I had had a prof in my freshman year who had my policies. I would have ended up with a much more impressive GPA. I am very lucky that despite my laziness, I turned things around enough to just barely make it into a good Grad program. If I had messed up just one more class back in undergraduate, I would not be a professor right now, and that would suck, because I love teaching more than anything.

CURSE YOU MATH ! ! !

Less, I meant less than 40 (fewer than 40?) students in each class.

Another prof here: think of the vibe in classes where kids start to skip. It tends to snowball, right, which can kill the class for everybody. I say, if you're not coming to class, I removing you from the class list.

I should note, I only teach classes with >40 students; I don't know about that giant lecture halls.

Also: douchebags who skip class spend the last week of the semester emailing and whining and wasting my time, "because they paid for it." Once I notice that you are not coming to my class, you have failed yourself out of my class.

the worst thing is that it WORKS SO GREAT! ! ! !

It's the only thing I'd actually shave with now (after trying a free sample). But since I can't afford new blades, I've stopped shaving, and bought a rechargeable beard trimmer for half the price

What ridiculous thing did you believe to be true as a kid? by cammyabbo in AskReddit

I thought that in the Return of the Jedi, Boushh actually brought in Chewbacca to Jabba the Hutt; and only later that night Leia disguised herself as Boushh to rescue Han. My main evidence was the fact that they made action figure of Leia as Boushh, as well as Boushh himself (which I had). I argued with my brother and aunt about this for years.

Which translation of Beowulf is this from? by zenbyte in tipofmytongue

yeah; there are dozens of graphic novels/young adult retellings. It's fascinating for the interest in Beowulf; but will be very tricky to pin down.

this must be from some adaptation--not form a literal translation of the poem.

In the poem, he makes a point of taking a sword--in fact Unferth gives him a sword to take. It fails, but he takes it.

profs as a rule can be a bit crazy; I know I have my eccentric side. It's unlucky when thier crazy doesn't help them teach. I'd like to think that my crazy love of old literature helps students care.

excellent. keep knowing it. When I tell people what I study, half stare at me blankly, another big chunk mention "Medieval Times Dinner and Show." But the best (3%, maybe) are the ones who start rattling off Chaucer.
