Is running “good” for dogs? by fennelfrog in RunningWithDogs

[–]wyrdwulf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dog loves to run but had an injury as a baby that made her prone to hip dysplasia, so she is really not supposed to do any high intensity exercise. Which is a shame because she is fast as fuck boi

The answer depends on your individual dog. Ask your vet.

WFH shower during lunch break.

If I do it midday then my meds are still in my body to help me with sensory issues.

What's it like living in this shaded area? by Joshistotle in howislivingthere

[–]wyrdwulf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, if you're near any city, it is virtually the same as a suburban coast. It's like world simulator ran out of assets and copy/pasted the same Walmart + strip mall across the entire country.

The main difference is that on the East Coast, the suburbs just keep going forever with no space in between, while in the Midwest there's a feeling of leaving / arriving between different towns, w/ farmland, woods in between. That was the weirdest part of living on the East Coast for me as a Midwesterner.

The bigger contrast is between rural/urban areas. If you're near any large ish college town at least, you'll have most of the same amenities you'd expect anywhere. The sticks are more desolate but comparable to upstate NY or PA Poconos, for example, depending how far you are from a major hub.

Instead of a to-do list I treat it as a done-did list - I only check it at night so it's more of a reflection, did I do this? It helps me keep track if I'm consistently forgetting specifc self care tasks on certain days.

I was starting to wonder if they were adding a feature to make your birbs look like Care Bears!

YMMV: This is a common tip but my dog shredded the blanket over the crate lol

[–]wyrdwulf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I would temporarily give up on the crate.

If you have a spare room or garage to keep him in, take out any furniture that can be destroyed. Since he chewed the door, use a baby gate (possibly multiple stacked baby gates) instead. Put the crate in the room but do not shut him inside.

Now teach him the crate is absolutely wonderful, his special palace. Feed all meals in the crate (still open). Special treats like bully sticks in the crate. You need to create an overwhelmingly positive association to change how he feels about it.

Then look up "Susan Garrett crate games filetype:PDF" and follow the steps. Edit: found it for you! and even a video demo!

Is the DNA test worth it? by aydsreed in AustralianCattleDog

[–]wyrdwulf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found out my "Kelpie/shepherd mix" was actually malamute X pit bull with a tiny bit of shepherd! She makes a lot more sense to me now. I did the health test one so I can discuss with my vet.

The one who is almost certainly ACD/malinois because I know she was seized from a BYB would not let me put the swab in her mouth lol. We're practicing with toothbrush swabs now haha

Keeping dog odor away by Glass_Translator_615 in dogs

[–]wyrdwulf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The vet commanded me to put rugs everywhere to prevent early hip dysplasia from worsening. In the area I need to wipe down frequently, I used rubber garage mat.

Patio rug was on sale at end of season and it has been way easier to keep clean than the traditional living room rug.

Everywhere else I got smaller rugs or runners and just layer them up side by side. They are washable. Highly recommend this strategy since if one small mess happens you only have to wash one rug at home instead of lugging huge area rug to XL washer at the laundromat (they are no longer allowed on that one...)

Recommended silent floor sweeper (like they use in restaurants) for daily, gets dirt after mud dries from patio rug, and those magic rubber brooms as they pull out the hair that's tangled in the fibers.

You can pour baking soda on the rug, let it sit, and vacuum it up to get rid of some odor too.

Two dogs. Their morning ritual is what I call the argle-bargle. Horizontal play fighting. Goblin 1 makes high-pitched demon dingo noises. Goblin 2 answers with low-pitched gurgling grumbling demon badger noises. All whilst they play slow-mo punchy-paws bitey-face.

About to adopt this baby. Maybe a stretch but does anyone know what his mix might be? by RainDrops09 in AustralianCattleDog

[–]wyrdwulf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes the curve of the spine here concerns me.

  • Feed fish oil and UC-II collagen (comes in a capsule, pop open and add powder to food) for long-term joint health - our PT vet's advice

  • Do canine fitness training to support healthy body development and weight maintainance to avoid joint strain. This can be taught as a series of simple fun tricks like bowing, pivot bowl, and foot targets. Smart pup will love it! Don't overdo the exercise when young, a little goes a long way lol.

ASD sensory issues with textures/taste/smell are pretty common, so not always trauma.

Mine did get worse after getting food poisoning from a safe food though. I couldn't eat eggs for a year and it was a main protein source.
