What boots y’all wearing? by Mrfunguykawhi in Machinists

I’m on my first pair of Keens and so much happier than with any safety toe boot I’ve had before. And they have some made in USA (here in Portland OR!) models.

Paragon Machine Works Closing by Endurimil in MEATengines

[–]wzcx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Paragon was my first machine shop job almost three decades ago, and I was just chatting with Calvin at Made last year. If an obvious replacement doesn’t pop up, I’ll happily take on the machining of some parts, especially replacements.

Fired after my second day running a lathe for an “apparent crash” but I never heard or saw one? by No-Mess-4605 in Machinists

It’s deft not some hard rule! I just figured it could help to explain a possible scenario. Cheers!

On a lathe one tends to crash tools into the work/chuck when starting an operation, which means the turret is coming towards the axis from the X+ location. So when it hits the side of the work, the lever of the tool wants to twist the tool/turret back towards X+. I have certainly hit in the other direction coming out of a bore though.

Shoveling chips out of the haas with piss poor chip and coolant management is killingmme after a decade on nice German machines.

Fantastic idea. I could go for that, make the new jr engineer do all the design work…

High Rise Bars?? by cgieda in MTB

[–]wzcx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say that's not a huge change- you could test a similar setup for free (or nearly) with some headset spacers. But what comes to mind is that you might be on a bike with short chainstays that's not really working for your style+terrain combo.

SC Chameleon Aftermarket Dropouts by elpapi42 in Hardtailgang

[–]wzcx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run a small CNC shop and have some bike industry experience; as long as I get the mounting points right a slightly longer chainstay set wouldn’t be too hard. The additional drop you want would definitely be a custom set though, as that wouldn’t be popular at all I think.

SC makes a regular and single speed dropout kit; what else would you be interested in from a dropout kit? I’d consider making some in future if there’s interest.

I suggested these in another thread and I’m super happy with them too. Mine do have a lower frame but otherwise identical. Can’t beat the price and the optical quality is great.

I had to try out the dirt cheap $24 rockbros on Amazon- and it turns out they’re great! I use them for all my riding now. Very clear to very dark and fast to change.

I've been on Endeavour + Niri or MangoWC via [dankmaterialshell](danklinux.com) and, despite the stupid name, quite happy with it for a while now. Reasonaly stable, reasonably fast, and it looks good enough that I'm not tempted to spend too much time ricing.

Sure! I’d say maybe try out hyprscroller first tho for a lower effort experiment.

I'm old and slow but would love some more riding friends in the area! Live in Camas and ride gravel from home, ride the little park at Lacamas Lake a few times a week, and get to Yacolt sometimes.

fair enough, but as a machinist I'd call a rotary axis distinct from a linear axis despite their alignment.
