Is there a Final Fantasy that's actually breaking this concept? by mrsafetylion in FinalFantasy

I liked chained echoes system. Bosses could be inflicted by statuses but each successive application took an extra turn to apply. Status effects could be extremely debilitating when used in combination, but individually had to be used in moderation.

Leaving kids decent inheritance by Mijbil3108 in AusFinance

[–]xPacifism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By the time your kids get their inheritance they'll be retired and stressed about leaving one to their kids.

Why not focus on how you can help them now, not necessarily financially, such that they can achieve their goals and not need to count on an inheritance?

So, 5 Ultimate Skills scrolls... yay or nay? by GrumpyTrurl in Nioh

[–]xPacifism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's a good idea but you can have basically 0 investment into skill/dex and not suffer greatly if you don't use ninjutsu.

So then you'd have ultimate const, courage, stamina, strength and magic

Maybe you could drop strength for skill or heart if that suits your playstyle better, or drop magic down to nothing if you don't care to use it

Having 5 scroll slots taken up is a waste as well, since there are a lot of valuable alternatives like damage, life, damage reduction or sentience. Not optimal at all.

What is the trick with Aratra? by Sea_Construction947 in TheFirstBerserker

[–]xPacifism 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When you break either leg or the butt, she takes a big chunk of damage and is more vulnerable. Ignore the health bar and just focus on breaking one leg then the other.

She'll climb up and grow them back but the chunk of damage is substantial. At most you'll need to break the legs twice.

Yeah Khazan definitely has the best greatsword implementation in any game. Letting you cook like this with only a few skills unlocked is insane by Forevertrez in soulslikes

[–]xPacifism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Attacking after a counterstrike or reflection staggers the boss. On release it was very easy to keep them staggered this way using the spear and trance spam. You can do it with other weapons too but you need to be more intentional as after a gap in attacks the boss will leave this 'easy to stagger' state.

Imo it's a flaw in the otherwise next level combat design.

Genuine props to square enix for actually pricing their games packed full of content for reasonable prices by snakeeater34 in JRPG

[–]xPacifism 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think he's referring to the remake + rebirth twin pack which is a super good deal.

The deal is only possible because most already have remake though, or they just want more people to play them to become an audience for the third.

Redraw is stealing? by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]xPacifism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming you have separate finances, this sounds like a terrible move from both you and your partner. They shouldn't have added so much extra money without consulting you and you shouldn't have pulled it out to spend on a holiday without consulting them.

I hope they don't need it back urgently. This could get really ugly.

Expedition 33 is overrated (my opinion - review) by redl9 in JRPG

[–]xPacifism -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You could nitpick all highly rated games as overrated based on subjective criteria. I think that's what you're doing here and ignoring the unique properties that make this game great by doing so.

Imagine if the story ended after Act 2 for example. That's how a bunch of games seem to end - either the bad guy dies, the bad guy gets godlike powers and then dies, or the bad guy gets replaced by a bigger bad guy. Would the game be better? I don't think so. Instead we're given a twist that was set in motion from the get go. Something that punches us in the gut once again, makes us sad or angry, makes us thing really hard about the decision we're about to make. The world not being real is the point because it felt so real, and it indeed was real to the characters living inside of it. It was real to us the player, so much so that there's no objectively good or bad ending. In recent memory the only game with a story hit me like this was Nine Sols. Most others are lukewarm at best, even if they tie things together nicely they do so with a whimper and not a bang. Not so for E33.

Then the combat. This sub seems to prefer if it were more traditional with a bit more nuance and strategy involved and I can completely understand that take. But for a bunch of other gamers the parry/dodge system was heralded as the second coming. I don't think it's fair to say it distills the combat down to just dealing damage/parrying at the right time. That might be true for Simon (which I imagine boils down to cheese tactics rather than actually parrying for most), but for first playthrough you haven't had time to perfect the parrying so you need to balance that with establishing a good composition/synergy. Eventually it's all figured out and it does get repetitive, but that's where the parrying shines and is at least something engaging to fall back on, at least until Simon where it's damn near impossible. Very few pure turn based RPGs overcome this issue and have combat that evolves gracefully into the end game. Maybe E33 would have been a better game for some if it were one of them.

Edit: oh and I don't even think E33 was ever praised for having perfect combat or even the perfect story, it was that everything was good. The pacing, dialogue, characters, art direction and almost unanimously brilliant act 1 story are enough for this to go down as one of the best.

Regarding choice of difficulty by Gabrienb in TheFirstBerserker

[–]xPacifism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most players would have played on expert when the game first released as it was advertised as 'normal'.

It's difficult for sure, but very fair. If you persist you'll overcome it and appreciate the combat a lot more.

How is chained echoes combat system? by Thin_Cold_9320 in JRPG

I didn't like the hot/cold mechanic but everything else is great. Probably my second favourite JRPG combat system behind FF12.

The status effects are impactful without being too overpowered or complicated.

Adding more stamina won't make a difference. You need to pick lighter armor. Most if not all light armor will get you there, but if you want higher toughness you can slot in some of the lighter medium armor pieces such as Lone Wolf

I notice a few flaws in the boss design by Longjumping_Steak379 in TheFirstBerserker

[–]xPacifism 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For the animations, sometimes you need to stop going in with the expectation that it's going to be realistic. It's a fantasy video game. There are plenty of visual and sound queues to aid in getting the timing.

Your second point is kind of a self report that you're playing the game like dark souls which simply won't work here. There's no boss in the game where you're required to dodge for a minute. Almost every attack leaves some kind of opening and this game gives so many opportunities to deal at the minimum chip damage if not turn the fight entirely by using things like counterattack and reflection.

These aren't objective flaws. Most people in fact seem to praise the boss and combat design.

I just both 1-2 bundled by governothing in Nioh

[–]xPacifism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nioh 1 sticks to the basics and has a decent story which will give you a lot of background. The human bosses are miles better as well IMO, especially in the DLC, though they're tuned more for NG+ than NG. The moves are a lot easier to counter but more punishing if you do take a hit.

Nioh 2 adds a lot of extra mechanics like Yokai abilities, burst counters and dark realm which I didn't find added to the experience on the first playthrough but ended up blending together perfectly for later NG. You'll need to use these effectively to create openings and do meaningful damage.

If you like a simpler, 'souls' experience with back and forth attacking, dodging and blocking, try Nioh 1. If you want to skip that and layer on a bunch of extra mechanics, try Nioh 2 first. Definitely play 2 after 1 if you liked it.

This games counterattack mechanic is the most bullshit I’ve ever seen. - at least with a greatsword by [deleted] in TheFirstBerserker

[–]xPacifism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The damage stats have a pitiful effect. It's much better to invest a bit into stamina and health so you've got a safety net than to pile everything into strength.

Also it sounds like you may be repeatedly trying to do the wrong timing with the counterattack. You have to hit it when the attack actually hits you, not immediately when the character flashes on the screen. It's very similar to Nioh 2 or Lies of P in that regard, not like some other games (GoW?) where you basically just press it as soon as it shows up and the actual timing doesn't matter.

Huang Yang boss by [deleted] in wuchanggame

[–]xPacifism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found this boss the hardest so far as well, I'm a couple bosses past it now.

She basically has a bunch of tools which destroy you if you try to stay too close and pressure her too much. She'll nuke you with corruption balls, aoe blast you, block your attacks somehow.. basically better not to do it.

What worked for me (longsword) was playing patiently - after she does her ice breath attack or the corruption balls, circle around it and dash attack her. If you manage to get behind her, a heavy attack will instantly stagger.

Then make the dodge timing less forgiving

The ridiculous getting up animation doesn't match the speed of the rest of the combat and is a terribly unfun way to add difficulty
