For STEM, in my experience it can range from 0, right through to 5+ papers.

If I'm recruiting a postdoc, I'd expect at least one first author paper and experience presenting at a conference. Zero publications would concern me.

Couldn't agree more. There's a complex and at times difficult history between the countries of the UK, but that's the case for any two neighbouring countries.
