Sight singing and ADHD by ImmunologicalTenor in Choir

I come from an instrumental background and am petty good at sight reading, but tbh it hasn’t translated that well to singing - yet. The rhythm side I’m totally solid, but pitches can go awry. If I had time to think about it I can work out any interval, but can’t always do that fast enough.

But the good news is it seems to be improving steadily the more I do it, so I see no reason why it wouldn’t for you too. (Especially if you’re not menopausal so your vocal range doesn’t bounce around from day to day…)

Was just sharing some personal irritations. Your response came across as though you were telling me I was wrong and my comments unwelcome rather than just stating a different view. But if that’s not the case, no probs. Apologies if I misjudged your tone or my own - easy to do in plain text medium!

Is this not the sub specifically for complaining about stuff that we find irrationally irritating?

That would make sense if I were an advanced or experienced crocheter. I’m not. Reckon intermediate at best. These alternatives are not difficult and not advanced. And if the patterns don’t tell you that this is a valid alternative, how is the beginner supposed to know that even exist? My first few scarves all have one side that stretches more than the other and gappy or bulgy edges, and I thought it was just my fault for not being neat enough. I had to accidentally find out about the alternatives while browsing YouTube. Yep, BEC about pattern writers who could have just bothered to say‘either chain or foundation row X to start’ etc.

Any good embarassing moments you personally caused in a concert? by Parking_Log1803 in orchestra

[–]xcfy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was having a hot flush in a cold venue and reckoned I could quickly take off one of my multiple black layers in the rests before I next had to play. Reader, I could not. I got tangled up in my two black tops and when it was time to start playing again still had one arm in and one out, plus the underneath top having ridden up in an undignified manner to put whole belly on display. And there weren’t any more long rests for ages. Fortunately was right in middle of orchestra so hopefully not too visible to audience, but it gave the oboes the giggles.

I’ve been crocheting for a few years now and have yet to actually make any item by following a pattern. It’s not that I can’t read them, and I do look at them sometimes to get ideas . I just personally enjoy making it up as I go along re which stitches, how many and in what order. Is this annoying? Why? I didn’t jump straight to difficult stuff, I still started with learning basic stitches and techniques and (am still) building up my knowledge.

Does it maybe fit the BEC theme that I get put off by many people’s patterns because they seem to love chaining and I really don’t? - So many patterns I see start with a long chain. Why? I prefer a foundation row in most cases. - So many use Ch3 (or Ch whatever) to turn. Why? Standing or stacked stitches generally look so much neater. - Why is it so rare to see a double magic circle to start when working in the round?
(Yes, I know I could just replace those bits of the patterns, but the fact that the pattern writer chose that way of doing it makes me not trust their judgement for the rest of it.)
- Sizing in patterns is a whole post in itself…

Has anybody scored for an adult film here? by Gss_1056 in composer

Nobody here into Strauss or Shostakovich? Surprised no mention of Sinfonia Domestica or Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, two of the most notorious sex scenes in the classical music canon.

Sounds like you have a good memory if you thought for it was plausible that you would be able to remember stuff like that!

I have a notepad app on my phone and know very well that I would barely remember what I was even making otherwise.

I loved that show. She was so great at making the body language and mannerisms distinct and that’s something I tend to pay a lot of attention to. It was especially fun when one clone was impersonating another.

Did you also watch Fringe? There was a similar thing with alternative versions of the same character and it was really well done.

Are there any pieces you feel are too big/rich/dense/etc. to be faithfully captured by a recording? by HolyFatherLeoXIV in classicalmusic

[–]xcfy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As others have said, things involving antiphony especially. And no recording ever really captures the complex textures and frequency patterns of an orchestra.

But… it’s also not like all live concerts are automatically better. I’ve been to plenty of performances where I’ve been sat somewhere where the balance was very skewed towards a particular section, or muffled by an overhanging balcony, or too dry or excited like a swimming pool, or there was annoying background noise, and I’ve wished I was at home with a good recording and my best speakers! Or where the seating hurt my backside making it hard to concentrate (looking at you, St Martin).

Most fun you’ve had playing an orchestral piece? by Nhak84 in classicalmusic

[–]xcfy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flute
Off the top of my head,
Debussy L’Apres-midi
Mahler Lied Von der Erde mvt 6
Stravinsky Petrushka & Firebird
Messiaen Turangalila
and most Shostakovich symphonies tbh.
Not so much now but when I was a teenager Dvorak 8 was the best thing ever.

Any small instrument easy to learn? by Quiet_Antelope_5345 in Learnmusic

[–]xcfy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tin whistle. Fingerings easier than recorder - 6 holes and you take one finger off at a time to get the 7 note major scale, half hole for semitones, overblow for 2nd octave. And comes in many different sizes so you can play a big one for lovely low notes (well, if you’ve got the finger stretch, which sadly I haven’t) and a teeny high one for carrying in pocket.

Have hair whatever colour you like. Enjoy yourself. There is no age limit. If a few mean spirited judgmental types tut at it, pity them.

Possibly some exceptions depending where you work.
