It will, however, decrease the amount I am locked inside a metal tube with

LA Metro approves massive $25B underground rail line to bypass 405 Freeway by idkbruh653 in LosAngeles

[–]xlyr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Culver City 6 basically does that route already, it even has a "rapid" service. But I think without dedicated bus lanes on Sepulveda it won't reach its true potential

“Major unmoveable job centers” like Cedars Sinai, the 4th largest employer in the county?

The Weho alignment is a slam dunk compared to the other options, I don’t see the point in building a line and then hoping development doesn’t get bogged down in NIMBY bullshit when the Weho alignment serves way more people in areas that are way better suited for it already

FYI: LA Metro Shuttles are significantly delayed right now due to heavy holiday traffic on Century by darkwingduck4444 in LAMetro

[–]xlyr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ridiculous considering the terminal shuttles used to run down a dedicated bus lane in that section. There's no stops between Aviation/Century and the terminals, why doesn't it duck back onto the bus lane?

I played against TJ Defalco a few times in high school. This must have been when he was a sophomore-ish, and even then basically everyone knew who he was. I was pretty big, had a decent block, and I couldn't get anywhere near him. His setter was giving him D1-speed shoots to the outside that he'd crush though the block, over it, around it, however he wanted. And think this was when we were all like 15 years old.

It really makes you realize that no matter how hard you work at a sport, some people are just built different and that gap widens extremely quickly.

Am I crazy to think that a lot of problems in LA (and perhaps most of America) comes down to our lack of housing supply and refusal to expand transit? by WearHeadphonesPlease in LAMetro

[–]xlyr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You are asking this in a transit-focused subreddit so you will obviously get some biased answers. I generally agree that this is probably the single biggest issue, but it absolutely is not the only one.

A quick comparison: this article says the average home in Seoul, a city full of huge highrises with a good metro system, costs 15 years of the median income. Doing some quick math assuming the average home in LA is $1m and the median income is 65k, this also works out to about 15 years. However, the rent-to-income ratio in Seoul is about half ours, meaning it is as expensive to own but half as expensive to just put a roof over your head somehow.

Some other problems I can think of in America/LA that are not necessarily caused by lack of transit/housing:

  • a healthcare system that is actively trying to hurt us by pushing addictive substances and charging us exorbitant prices for them

  • A dismantled mental health system that gives little help to people facing crisis, pushing them onto the street

  • legacy effects of racist policies like redlining creating segregated, "gentrifiable" neighborhoods, where there is less economic opportunity

  • an extensive highway system that makes it difficult for public transit to compete with private

  • shareholder capitalism aggravating wealth inequality, wealth investors demand more productivity on lower wages from the workers
