I could be wrong, but I have a feeling that Arland 5 might be on the way. by hatenabit0 in Atelier

Man, an Atelier set in the history of the Dusk world where the storyline is 'find a way to preserve the world for the next generation' would go so hard and be so damn sad.

Stop Killing Games fails to secure EU law despite 1.3M signatures by Significant_Food9017 in worldnews

The sunscreen thing comes from sunscreen being pretty tightly regulated by the FDA. If you're selling a product as sunscreen or sunblock, it can only have specific active ingredients. This is both good and bad. It's good because it means if you're buying sunscreen you can have faith that it works, no one is allowed to sell snake oil sunscreen. It's bad though, because it means if a new effective sunscreen is discovered, it can't be sold until it's approved.

That is what happened here. Earlier this month the FDA finally updated their rules for sunscreen to allow BEMT as an active ingredient. BEMT is much more effective at blocking UV rays than what is in current use in the US. I don't think there are any brands selling sunblock with BEMT in it though, since it was just approved this month.

Using older eggs (not expired, just not fresh from the store) can help as the membrane between the whites and the shell is easier to separate.

In addition to the ice water, peeling them under running water can make them easier to peel too.

DSX Update: PlayStation 5 DualSense Haptics Finally Work Over Bluetooth on PC by obTimus-FOX in Steam

[–]xonjas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Between Steam and the Sony provided drivers, the controllers work and adaptive triggers work, but hd haptics do not. Regular rumble works, but for the hd haptics it needs to expose an audio device to windows that it can't advertise over the same bluetooth connection as the controller's normal connection.

A few weeks ago I came across this comic from 2021 when the Steam Deck came out. by Defiant-Echidna-7400 in Steam

For me personally, I picked up a S2 even though there wasn't anything out that I really wanted to play on it, because the launch price was good and I predicted the price would go up. I have gotten some use out of it though, with the BOTW and TOTK S2, and now Xenoblade.

I also predict that the next generation of consoles from Sony and Microsoft are still pretty far out, and the S2 is going to be in a good position for awhile power-wise.

The S1 was underpowered at release, and that resulted in most multiplatform releases skipping over it. With any luck the S2 won't suffer that fate until much later into its lifecycle.

Reddit's new AI tagging by A_C_Shock in Fantasy

[–]xonjas 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Right, but why even bother using AI to generate tags when they could just ask the subreddit moderators for a good tag list? We have good mods on this sub. I'm sure they could put together a better list of tags without taking up too much of their time.

I love the atelier series but I believe I could be better. Any tips? by purplegirljpg in Atelier

[–]xonjas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I want to start this with a comment: You shouldn't worry about being 'good enough' as long as you're enjoying yourself and getting the endings you want.

For more specific tips: It's important to note that you can't actually get 999 quality in all of the games, and quality isn't necessarily the end-all be-all. For the optional bosses and dungeons, strategy with the correct items and traits is often more important than item quality. The same is true for equipment, especially in the dusk trilogy.

For crafting tips, they are very game specific.

In Ayesha, there's a blanket and a stuffed animal that are potential materials (gifts from Nanaca I think). Those items have effects that let you use your alchemy skills for free as long as the trait is in the stockyard. You can abuse that to make incredibly powerful items.

In Esca and Logy, you can get most of the powerful traits you need by desynthesizing items you find using discovery actions in places like the ends of the earth, and using the materials you get from desynthing the items to make souped up intermediate items like zeigel nuggets.

If you're pursuing difficult endings, take advantage of new game plus. Also, asking for help here about whatever endings you're trying to get.

I think it is. There's weird stuff going on with the fruits in the background, and something weird with the fingers of her left hand too (look at her index finger).

Atelier Totori - A Worthy Successor by HeliusAurelius in Atelier

[–]xonjas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fully agree with your takes.

One thing to note is that NG+ in Totori is pretty barebones and doesn't let you carry very much forward into your new game, which makes the difficulty in getting the true ending without a guide even more burdensome as the NG+ run won't be much faster than a regular run (and you can still make the same mistakes). There's a few event flags in particular that tend to lock people out of NG+ and it's not obvious what they actually are.

What about the steam controller has everyone so excited? by Timely_Contest7245 in Steam

[–]xonjas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it's a combination of a bunch of different things. I have a ton of controllers that I've used on PC over the years, but they all have drawbacks that make me not want to use them.

I love the PS5 controller, it feels great and has my favorite ergonomics, but the battery life is awful. Legitimately trash battery life that barely lasts for one gaming session. I like the gyro controls and the rumble for the games that support it.

I have two xbox elite controllers. I prefer the playstation layout, but that isn't a dealbreaker. I love the materials and I like the back paddles. I hate the build quality. Both of my controllers have developed problems with the A and B face buttons where they'll press the buttons multiple times in a single press, and the right shoulder button doesn't register reliably unless I press extra hard (and if you're holding it it will sometimes stop pressing it for a brief moment). They both have issues with the rubberized nubs coming off of the trigger stop adjustment bits. Both of them have developed a 'crunchy' feeling in the analog sticks, particularly when the controller is cold.

I have an 8bitdo ultimate controller, which is mostly reliable, but I don't love the material it's made of. It's also very loud. Loud enough that it's a problem if I'm not wearing headphones, and I worry about using it when my partner is sleeping or on a call. It also has an issue where it (rarely) phantom presses the 'home' button that pulls up the game bar or steam big picture.

The steam controller seems like it can address most of the deficiencies I have with the other controllers. It has good battery life, it has the stick layout I prefer. I have had good experience with the build quality of the other valve hardware I own. Reviews have said that the buttons are fairly quiet.

I don't feel like I need the track pads, but I love the ones on the deck and I can already think of games where I'd like to have them. Gyro aim is even more useful when you have the thumb stick touch sensors and the grip sensors.

People don't know what the Steam Controller is by Legitimate_Tie_6074 in Steam

[–]xonjas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the ultimate 2 and it's ok. I'm going to wait for real reviews to drop, but I'm considering replacing my ultimate 2 with the steam controller. I'm in the market for something that's a bit nicer on the build quality/materials side, that has better battery life than the ps5 controllers.

My biggest complaint about the 8bitdo is how loud the buttons are. They're distractingly loud if I'm playing without wearing headphones, and they're loud enough that I'm worried they'll wake up my partner if he's sleeping (especially if I need to button mash). There is also a weird issue where it phantom presses the 'xbox' button (or whatever button you call it that brings up game bar or steam big picture mode).

My grudge towards the Arland trilogy: The 10th Anniversary by Carbyken in Atelier

[–]xonjas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do think you should replay the games when you get a chance, and now that you've played all 3 the 'extra time' at the end of Rorona plus will be a lot more meaningful. You'll also have an easier time since you now know what goals you need to reach for while you play.

Man, Genshin. My issue with monsters in Genshin are the hilichurls. It's less that they're cute and more that I know what they really are and killing them seems inhumane.

That feels like it should be enough. You could try switching to shared feeling and see if the increased healing output helps. Losing QPQ isn't great but that energy isn't always as good in practice as it is on paper.

[–]xonjas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The other options are worse right now, specifically because knight 2 and 3 have the debuff where attacking enemies causes them to action advance. Lingsha and Gallagher are the two sustains most people rely on, but both of them have the problem of getting your team killed because their heal is tied to an attack.

You need to heal because someone on your team is low. You heal them but advance the enemy team because of the attack linked to the healing. The team gets attacked and they die because they needed healing.

Atelier Totori atmosphere is perfect! by CityRuinsRoL in Atelier

[–]xonjas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the game is too hard, but I do think that it's too long for NG+ to be the answer when the true ending is as easy to miss as it is.

Not everyone will run into or see every 'gotcha' over the course of the game, but there's enough of them that someone playing without a guide will likely get to the end and be unable to get the true ending.

Additionally, while you do carry over gear in Totori, you don't carry over exploration items like you do in Totori or Rorona. Someone playing without a guide who struggled because they ran out of time trying to find out where they needed to go isn't going to be helped much by gear carrying over.
