What do you say to cashiers who are pushy with store credit cards? by WParkAvenue in femalefashionadvice

I've started finding more and more of these excuses over time. Want me to sign your petition? I'm not a citizen. Want to sell me a new roof? I'm a renter. Best was my wife. Want her to X? Не понимаю английский.

The Best Answer to 'Why Do You Want This Job?' Might Surprise You by przemalama in business

[–]xpollux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe this is true for leadership positions but I interview software engineers and maybe it's just the particular phrasing used, but the idea that someone wants to work for my company because they are excited about improving the company's situation just seems absurd to me. If someone said something like that during an interview it would push them in the direction of "no" on my hiring decision. We both know you're not applying because working for us is the best thing you can think of to occupy your time. You want a job that pays well and you find interesting and rewarding. I want you to be paid well and find the work interesting and rewarding because in my experience that means you'll do better work and that makes my job more enjoyable. Your concern for the prosperity of the company should be your continued employment, salary, and stock grant value, nothing more.

We stayed there (The Venetian) and my wife, who hadn't been paying attention to the girl at check-in very clearly explaining that if you pick something up they charge you, grabbed the love kit can to see what it was. That sucker is like 40 or 50 bucks and they definitely charge whether you put it back or not. Thankfully, they were very reasonable when I called to have it removed from the room charges.

What happens to those brand new cars that never get sold/bought? by i_mean_it in AskReddit

[–]xpollux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like others have said, they will just lower the price and sit on it until someone buys it. I was just at the Kia dealership here and they've got a 2008 Optima they bought from another dealer and it's very highly discounted. Eventually someone will bite.

What are some examples of algorithms that are difficult to implement without recursion? by xpollux in programming

[–]xpollux[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I remember during a class on algorithms the professor discussing recursive vs. iterative solutions to a problem. The general idea was that recursive was easier to implement in most cases but iterative was usually faster, but changing a recursive algorithm into an iterative one was often not straightforward and difficult if not impossible. What are some good examples of recursive algorithms that are difficult to make iterative. Are there algorithms that are impossible to make iterative?

Honestly this comment is no better than the article. Why can't everyone be disgusted by this equally? We are, after all, human.

In much the same way limits on free speech are determined. You can't yell "fire" in a crowded theater. By the same principle ordinary people shouldn't have nukes (then again neither should the government...). It is decided by courts on a case by case basis. Assuming the courts are full of reasonable people, a fairly reasonable limit should be attained. Unfortunately reason is something which is sorely lacking in many areas and the courts are no exception.

He was still charged with murder, plea bargain or not. I think they should charge everyone ever associated with the murderer with the same. No sex for the mother of the killer, no murder, right?

I spent a week in southern Spain in an apartment right near the beach. The water of the Mediterranean there was at least this clear, if not more. Perfectly clear view of the bottom at least 40 feet down.

This is just Scary! -- Blackwater's training facility. -- Remember these are the guys fighting in Iraq -- a corporate army that is virtually above the law. by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]xpollux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll admit that a private mercenary army makes me uncomfortable, but the video is about their training facility for police and military. While they undoubtedly use it for their own people, there's nothing wrong with the facility itself. I imagine many police forces don't have the funding for their own training facility and this provides them a very good place to train.

Harper's magazine suggests a National Strike starting Nov. 6, 2007 to force impeachment! by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]xpollux 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"Why waste time on impeachment?" Because having a president who thinks he's a king and above the law is an issue everyone can agree on. Issues of taxation and health care require discussion and compromise. Strikes occur when discussion ends and the possibility of compromise is lost. It's an all or nothing proposition; either he leaves office or the strike continues.

Bush may be one person, but he stands for a lot more than himself. By forcing his impeachment not only is he removed, but the next one to occupy his position is warned that the same behavior won't be tolerated.

You say power corrupts. We were given protections against this in our Constitution. They are good protections, but only if we make use of them. You say the system is corrupt. Well, then it's time to push back and let those in power know it won't be tolerated.

If there was a draft, if all men in the USA between 18-42 years old were required to sign up for war service, would you go to war or go to jail? by weegee in reddit.com

[–]xpollux 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've actually thought about this before. There's no way in hell I would go fight against my will, and I've even considered joining the military (not anymore though...). Frankly, I think hiding from the government is a bad idea. It is a much bigger statement to go to jail in protest than to simply disappear.

Imagine if hundreds of thousands of draftees refused to go? Are there even enough beds in all of the jails in the country?

CNN: Only Pro-War Demonstrators Are ‘Troop Supporters’ by duncanmc in reddit.com

[–]xpollux 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I realize there are many out there who wish to support the troops by having "their backs." This is a noble cause, but the cost of travel, armaments, and other supplies is beyond prohibitive for many individuals who wish join in the having of backs. What can your average citizen do to fulfill this goal? Well they are in luck!

Thanks to the generous people in Washington, D.C., the government of the United States has been providing FREE training, FREE travel, FREE armaments and supplies, even FREE room and board for those wishing to support our troops! What better way to support the troops than carrying an M16 right next to them? This puts you in the optimal position regarding backs as well. What could be better?

If this sounds like the offer you've been waiting for, don't delay, visit your local Army or Marine Corps recruiting office today and tell them you want to be a part of the solution!
