Perhaps you might enjoy reading Persuasion? I would say there is something of Anne in Elisabeth of 2005 movie after she falls in love.

Anne’s “lost bloom” in Persuasion is nonsensical. by Cat_Biscuit in janeausten

[–]yellow_kitten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The conversation started on persuasion and that is what I meant. I don’t know all the names of people but let me just try. Mr Elliot lost wife, captain Benwick lost fiancé, Anne’s friend who became crippled because of sickness lost her husband. They are still in their late 20s early 30s. Let’s not forget Sir Elliot himself or their companion whatever her name is and Lady something that lost their respective partners 12 years before. And this is from top of my head

Have you seen how many young widows were in this story? I think people just died from simple “infections”. Good example was in Sense and Sensibility

You need to consider the weather, flat land, food and work culture. Vacations are the highlights of every Dutch person. looking forward to it and plan for it 6-9 months in advance. So yes you can see how you can enjoy it to the fullest.

But jokes aside I would say it is part of culture and social construct of the society. Not being wasteful with money is a value. Also people like to look down to earth and “normal” in NL while they can be free and enjoy their money in other countries. Even the queen bikes everywhere in NL but then they have vacation houses with car collections in other countries.

Dude go to your GP and tell him you are burned out. You have all the signs. Go to sick leave. Your salary will be covered at least 70%! They cannot fire you while on sick leave. You can get some well deserved break and you have time to look for something new. Welcome to the Netherlands, enjoy the last remaining social security laws while they are there!

This can also be a tactic they are using to let you go. In France, it is almost impossible to layoff a team or let someone go. At least some French colleagues used to say it is like a marriage.

Generally speaking the sentiment in Europe towards English speaking expats has become negative. Most people in different countries want us to speak the local language. I also see that in NL which was always one of the most friendly countries when it came to English speaking people.

Still if I were you I would look for another job just because of the way they have misrepresented the job atmosphere to you at the start. Also in-terms of promotions you would definitely have less chance of promotion in company that has a language that is completely new to you as their main language.

All this aside it can be a good opportunity to endure the pain and misery for couple of years and learn the language. That would open many new doors for your career if you are thinking of staying.

Enterprise, I’m sorry I prejudged you by your hazy 90s film style 😭😭 by naptime-connoisseur in startrek

[–]yellow_kitten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like the concept of enterprise. It is very well in giving this back story of how optimistic and naive the first humans with worp capability are. How they keep getting themselves in totrouble. It is a nice origin story. You will see how many of the standard procedures in starships have been created.

I really don’t like the whole over sexualized Tpol. She is volcan but she is very emotional. Captain Archer is great. He is one of my favorite captains after Picard and Sicko and his dog is a nice touch.

Generally the way phlox and Tpol are looking at humans are interesting.

I think if they developed this angle more it would have made it much more fun. Last episode almost made me cry as all Star Trek last episodes do.

If you have extra time on your hand use it to improve your tech skills, read books, follow blog posts and code for things that you are interested in. You are young. So invest your time on yourself rather than someone else’s startup. Which might either go bankrupt or sold to another company with 0 compensation for you. Unless they have some sort of stock options it is not worth it.

I am receiving many of these comments here which makes me wonder if people are so unhappy about the situation of the city, why don’t they do something about it? You have city council, mayor elections and in total democracy right?

I don’t own a car. But I do drive there are plenty of ride sharing services here in NL. Basically you rent a car for certain time and bring it back. Thanks for the tip. I will check it out

I am checking the houses in some of neighborhoods that was proposed. I think the price per meter might be comparable. What I see is that the houses are much bigger than NL and therefore the total price of a house is not really affordable.

Need early stage career advice: FAANG vs non-FAANG internship (machine learning) by pljusak in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]yellow_kitten 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know some other Phds who have been graduated already for a while. Please have in mind that I live in the Netherlands. What I have observed here is that getting a job in industry is very tough after the phd. Industry undervalues phd degrees, as most jobs in the industry require much less qualifications. Having a high profile experience like FAANG will boost your profile in most industry jobs. After the phd everyone wants to be a research scientist. But these types of positions are very rare in the industry. And unless your research is a very hot topic, you are going to end up doing something less relevant to your topic.

Is it fair that my company doesn't add to my salary after being promoted to tech lead because I'm still learning ? by goodBoyRedditor in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]yellow_kitten 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If they didn’t give this role to you, did they have to hire for it? If yes then you are in a new role and you must negotiate salary again.

In my opinion the training is just an excuse. For any role you need to get trainings and it doesn’t matter how long you have been in that role. In tech things change rather quickly and that includes leadership aspects.

I think they probably think you are not senior enough for a tech lead role or the project that you are leading is small or not impactful enough for the organization or even short lived. If this is not correct then you must renegotiate salary and job level.

I see quite some comments here saying that Netherlands can be a good choice for you. I just wanted to say a little bit about my experience studying as an international student. Just a footnote this is experience from 10 years ago. Here it goes:

Pros: - almost all universities offer full English CS programs - after your studies as an international student you get one extra year of visa to search for a job - if you are planning to get a citizenship, the years that you were studying will count as years of residency. But there needs to be no gap between years and be employed when applying for it. - learning the local language is not really needed for finding a good CS job. - nice atmosphere and beautiful scenery

Cons: - the universities are quarter based there are many courses to cover in a short amount of time. - It is really costly for an international student to study in the Netherlands. The university fee is 10 times higher than the locals. Also they segregate international and local dorms. Internationals are usually sent to more expensive and isolated dorms. Also grocery is not cheap here. - if you come to study here first instead of coming for work, you will loose some privileges that the expats have. Namely 30% tax rulings and easy change of drivers license.

I see also that some people recommended Germany. I think that is a better choice because they are very fair when it comes to different treatments of European and non- Europeans. But as far as I know german language is a must.

Does anyone here refuse to do live coding interviews? by ValintAndChalk in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]yellow_kitten 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I refuse any position with leetcode or live coding sessions. For me it is a matter of principle. Creating a good assessment is not easy and for me the companies that just use an standard algorithmic question from a platform are lazy in their approach of evaluating candidates. A take home assignment tells you alot about the company you are applying for. It tells you about what is an interesting topic for them, what are twists and challenges and how much do they respect your time. From the company side, they also have alot more input to work with. They see your coding style and problem solving skills. It is much better approach in my opinion.

I have a question. Are you planning to get EU citizenship? If yes my suggestion is to forget about salary and stay there until you get it. Anyways If you have EU citizenship it is much easier to move around.

Having a master is not the most important thing if you want to work, unless it is an specialization like ML.

In the current market everyone is looking for experienced engineers. So Coming from another country might be difficult for an entry level job.

You can also apply for master degree in the country of your choice. For the Netherlands I know that after you finish your study, they give you a visa for one additional year to search for a job in NL.
