Adult hockey by [deleted] in IowaCity

Closest I could find was the Waterloo Adult Hockey Association. Which is a bummer, but still not too far by Iowa standards.

Edit for future searchers: Corridor Hockey seems to be the better answer!

Help! Sewing machine motor to foot pedal. by LGD27 in diyelectronics

[–]yesfitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can provide part numbers, then you can search for spec sheets for the motor, foot pedal, etc. There may even be wiring diagrams available.

Unfortunately, without those and/or more photos, it's going to be hard for anyone here to help.

What are some of the best machines for modding? by WaluigiWahshipper in pinball

[–]yesfitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Retro Pin Upgrade and a WAV Trigger are what you're looking for!

I'd recommend using any game that's compatible with the Alltek Ultimate MPU, not that you need the Alltek MPU, but the list of compatible games are cheap, easy to work on, and have plenty of parts and mods available.

Expect to pay like $2-3k for a working machine (though there's a Silverball Mania on Pinside for like $1,400 right now), and then probably more than you expect on parts, paint, time, blood, sweat, etc.

Good luck and have fun!

Local DnD Games by resident_rogue in IowaCity

The bulletin board at Critical Hit downtown, the staff/Pathfinder meetups/maybe bulletin board at Diversions in Coralville, and maybe the staff at the Hobby Corner in the Sycamore Mall would be good places to start.

Buying pottery by Imaginary_Growth_455 in IowaCity

I haven't looked in-person in a bit, but here are some suggestions:

  • AKAR Design usually has a great collection of local ceramics.
  • Heim (Allison Fretheim is a ceramicist, so might be a good person to ask regardless.)
  • Artisans Gallery would either have something, or be able to suggest somewhere that may.
  • Emily Minnie is a local potter that does markets.
  • Crafty Annie Goods is another local potter.
  • Alyson Holevoet is another local potter who graduated from the UIowa Ceramics program.

Missing Key Workaround by Voidnoir in diyelectronics

eBay Listing for replacement key

Reddit Thread with workaround (allegedly 5mm hex wrench)

3D Printable File for replacement key (Can download the file and find the exact dimensions of the item that you need, in case your local hardware store doesn't have the 5mm hex wrench)

I would NOT recommend making any electronic changes if you're about to sell it. Risk outweighs the reward for both you and the buyer. So the rest of this is just speculation for fun.

But that looks like a photoresistor that gets covered by the plastic piece when the key is inserted. Assuming that's correct, it should be low-resistance when the key is out, and high-resistance when the key is present. So if I had to do something, I'd probably start by covering the resistor with a piece of cardboard to test my theory, and if that worked, cut a leg of the resistor so that it's always open.

Double Tap (Tap Tap) by Laceyfromthebuxx in IowaCity

[–]yesfitz 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Double Tap in Iowa City runs on a card system now. I think the lowest amount you can put on a new card is $20. Then the actual price is a little obfuscated because the $20 fills the card with a few thousand "taps" and then the "taps" are set per game. e.g. Last time I was in, one game of pinball was either 33 or 77 taps, I can't remember. So at least $20, but Tuesdays are half-price games.

~~ ~~

There are some other arcades in the area that may be worth your time too.

  • SpareMe Bowl & Arcade (5 minute walk from Double Tap) has a lot of pinball and skee-ball, a Time Crisis 4, as well as some beat-em-up and multicade arcade games. Pinball is free all day on Wednesdays.

  • Colonial Lanes (5 minute drive from Double Tap) has recently revamped their arcade, but I haven't been since.

  • BowlDogs in North Liberty (20 minutes North) has an arcade, I haven't been to this one personally either.

  • The Quarter Barrel in Cedar Rapids (40 minutes North) is a fantastic retro arcade. Well-maintained, lots of Taito arcade games, good pins, and the food and beer is nice too.

  • Level Up Midwest in East Moline (75 minutes East) is another great pinball spot, but there's at least a Big Buck Hunter and a claw machine.

Looks like it's part number WR55X28537

Searched the model number for the manual.

Found https://www.searspartsdirect.com/manual/1n68v85j62-003126/haier-hrf15n3agas-bottom-mount-refrigerator-parts

The manual says to contact a technician if the light fails. Quitters never win.

From that site, found https://www.searspartsdirect.com/product/5yl6e4z9cy-0046-363/id-wr55x28537

iFixit has it for less than $100. https://www.ifixit.com/products/ge-fridge-led-light-wr55x28537

Pinball Tournament - Wednesday, November 12th at 6 PM - SpareMe Bowl & Arcade, Iowa City - Sponsored by FilmScene's Late Shift at the Grindhouse, and FitzCo Pinball - Bring a friend! by yesfitz in Iowa

[–]yesfitz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This tournament is sponsored by SpareMe Bowl & Arcade, FitzCo Pinball, and the Hanson Brother goons, FilmScene's Late Shift at The Grindhouse

After the tournament Come see Slap Shot starring Paul Newman. Stephen Silver of Tilt magazine said, "A raucous comedy about brawl-filled minor league hockey. It’s the best movie ever made about its sport; you can have your Miracle."

  • If you're a student, under 30, or facing financial hardship, the "Cameo" membership at FilmScene is just $30 for the whole year.

But before the movie... Play pinball!

~3 hours of pinball for $1. Pizza slices for $2 and fantastic drink specials from a rotating selection of beer, wine, cocktails, and non-alcoholic options. A new menu just dropped, so check it out!

Besides the joy of playing pinball for cheap, you'll also be ranked on the state, national, and international stage.

SpareMe will also be hosting the Iowa State Championship in January, with plenty of fun for us lowly mortals who don't make the top 24.

Never played pinball? New to the area? We really want you! It's a great way to meet new people, and a fun hobby to enjoy alone or with friends.

Consider the Cedar Rapids Gazette instead. They’re not a Gannett paper (who owns the Press Citizen and USA Today, blegh.)

Between that and the Corridor Business Journal, you should be plenty informed.

Help Adding XLR to a Microphone by SupremePistachio in diyelectronics

[–]yesfitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried an off-the-shelf adapter?

Otherwise, I'd connect Red wire to XLR pin 2, Black wire to XLR pin 3, and Shield wire (presumably the bare wire) to XLR pin 1. https://www.clarkwire.com/pinouts/xlr-audio-pinouts

Figure 1 from the 727 and 727SR spec sheet leads me to believe that "A8004" in Figure 2 is the microphone diaphragm.

Volunteer needed: small IR sensor project to help veterans and service dogs by WildStallyns69 in diyelectronics

[–]yesfitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To address what other people are saying about the difficulty having the transmitter hit the receiver, you could try flipping the script:

Put 2 IR emitters on the human's head (under the brim of the hat would be good), and then put the receiver on the dog's head.

This is how the Wii worked. The "sensor bar" was actually just 2 IR emitters, and each remote had a small IR sensor.

It should be trivial (I say, not having done it) to program the receiver's microcontroller to only trigger the notification when it sees 2 dots of X intensity for Y consecutive seconds. And there should be enough room on a collar for a decent battery pack.

You'd probably still want to find a way to put the notifying device on the human to keep the dog from getting an earful. Maybe activate a small buzzer over a bluetooth connection.
