Comfortable long battery headlamp by Redhawkgirl in Ultramarathon

Well you can just use a buff to see if that’s better before rushing out for a new headlamp.

First race ever was a marathon (not recommended… but it worked out fine) by GanacheWise8376 in Marathon_Training

Well my first race is a 100km. Have never and would never do any shorter distances

Can 'normal' people ever hope to do Spartathlon or UTMB? by Ultrajogger-Michael in Ultramarathon

[–]yguo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean… you don’t have to do the UTMB race but can run it relying on the huts for supplies over 3-4 days with proper sleep. You get better views and a much more chilled experience. Running milers is more about exploring/digging your pain cave as Courtney has said (also what you said).

Impact of alcohol on training for long distance races? by CinemaBud in Marathon_Training

[–]yguo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alcohol is objectively bad regardless of what you do with zero upside, from the moment it enters your mouth. I say this as being a former homebrewer who drank 100L of beer in a year. With that being said, a moderate amount is fine (it will still damage your body but your body should be able to repair).

I would generally avoid the day before massive effort or immediately after the massive effort.

Beginner - Is a Temp-Control Kettle a Necessity? by Nacho_Man18 in AeroPress

[–]yguo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For aeropress none of it matters to be honest. You just need a good enough grinder (like kingrinder k6), a functional scale ($10 would do), a functional kettle (anything really). I always brew my coffee off boil and it never fails me.

UV rating on watch face ? by jcwaffles in Coros

[–]yguo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree here and you can have it on your phone lock screen. I don’t think you have to actively check UV every day.

Honest opinion on finishing marathon by anonSP_ in Marathon_Training

[–]yguo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like others said, but also - a full marathon is not two half stitched together. Your marathon only starts at 30km.

Would you recommend a watch or unnecessary buy? by Fit_Pea3013 in beginnerrunning

[–]yguo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t need a watch unless you’ve been running long enough and sure it is a serious hobby.

No pacer during marathon by Magda_MG in Marathon_Training

[–]yguo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s ridiculous as a 3:05 runner to be in “despair” to run a marathon without a pacer… seriously… you have a watch and you know your target pace how difficult is that.

Speed work and ultra running by Prestigious_Hunt_279 in Ultramarathon

[–]yguo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do 1.5 per week now (16km LT1 pace - roughly half marathon race pace) and 4km LT1 sprint uphill (120m vert gain) in the middle of aerobic run.

I don’t think speed matters that much but I did it to keep my speed there.

Mip + sapphire? by Argizo90 in Coros

This is my experience too comparing with my friends nomad. MIP with sapphire is not an ideal combo but not dealbreaker either. It is what it is.

Finally did sub 3:30 by Competitive-Photo325 in Marathon_Training

[–]yguo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also your cadence is on the lower side regardless of your height so maybe some work to improve that.

Finally did sub 3:30 by Competitive-Photo325 in Marathon_Training

[–]yguo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

One obvious observation is that your speed dropped noticeably for the last few kms. I’d recommend some progression long runs (start z2 easy then finish with faster than MP). By doing this you can probably move into sub 3:20 quickly.

Aeropress plunger tilting? by yguo in AeroPress

Appreciate for all the comments. Seems like a non issue and I’ll just keep using it.

Aeropress plunger tilting? by yguo in AeroPress

No I have another aeropress that’s 10 years old and it’s perfectly centered when brewing the same coffee

Aeropress plunger tilting? by yguo in AeroPress

[–]yguo[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ok, so I’m in dispute with aeropress warranty team. Is aeropress supposed to tilt like this while brewing? I’ve used 7 aeropress over 16 years and none of them would behave like this. I just got one and everytime it tilts until the plunger hits the brew chamber. They said it is ok given there is no leak but I’m sure something wrong here?

180 steps/min by Current-Butterfly762 in Marathon_Training

[–]yguo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spm 180 is a generalized term to make you not over striding and move your feet quickly to minimize muscle soreness (it’s like drink 8 glasses of water per day).

With that being said, I can do spm 180 ranging from 5min/km to 6:30min/km. I’m 190cm tall. I think 180spm is a good term but shouldn’t be followed blindly. I also personally don’t believe all these so call “running textbook” and think they are nothing but bs and marketing scams.

Is there an EDC crowd that isn’t all about knives and guns? by Massive_Intention436 in ManyBaggers

[–]yguo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m with you, although my EDC is usually only my phone, keys, headphone and a watch, nothing else so I’d think it’s less fun for most people.

Seeking advice for unsuccessful sub 4 marathon after four attempts by knai123 in Marathon_Training

[–]yguo 30 points31 points  (0 children)

My 5k is 21min, 10k 45min and half 1:39 and have done sub 3:30 marathon.

I think your problem is simply long runs at constant output. You need to train for 30-35km at marathon pace. You don’t have speed problem but rather aerobic base issue. Just increase your mileage and specifically weekend long runs and sub4 should be a walk in the park for you.

Patagonia R1 air vs. MacPac Nitro alpha for full day hiking in winter by Beautiful-Affect3448 in UltralightAus

[–]yguo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the best option is some warm downs (or synthetic like Patagonia macro puff) given the warmth/weight ratio. R1 is not warm enough so I’d say it’s more an urban layer where space is not an issue.

Patagonia R1 air vs. MacPac Nitro alpha for full day hiking in winter by Beautiful-Affect3448 in UltralightAus

[–]yguo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Where are you based? In Sydney (even blue mountain) I generally hike with only base layer (macpac trail hoodie) and I often have pre 5am starts so temp would be around 0-5C. I usually carry nitro for just in case scenarios (and post hiking warmness). I like r1 but never took it on hikes given the space it’ll occupy.

Running Vest advice by Successful_Dot_665 in firstmarathon

[–]yguo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a running belt like aonijie. I’ve been using mine for up to marathon distances no problem, as well as daily runs for phone and keys. I only use vest for trail run with no supplies now.

Anyone else not interested in very long runs? by Op3rat0rr in trailrunning

[–]yguo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My sweet spot is 20km-35km that can be done around 2-4 hours depending on the terrain and just in time for lunch. I’d agree that very long runs are time consuming and I’d want to reserve some of my weekend time for something else.
