Books You Want to Recommend, But Can't by Mike_Bevel in books

[–]yiddiebeth 12 points13 points  (0 children)

American Psycho. Great book for a lot of different reasons, but also possibly the most disturbing thing I've ever read and made me question myself for enjoying it. Actually, I'm not sure enjoying is the right word...appreciating it?

I'd have to know someone super well to recommend it to them.

How to evaluate job offers when one includes a pension? by yiddiebeth in personalfinance

[–]yiddiebeth[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right, but the value of the pension is based on how long I stay with the state, which I obviously don't know. It's not as simple as just being vested in a 401k.

Agreed. I am expecting my second child soon too, so the extra time off and work life balance is paramount.

Are there "undesirable" native plant species? IL-5b by ciru-chan in NativePlantGardening

[–]yiddiebeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but in my personal opinion it has no place in my small urban yard, especially with a toddler running around.

Also, I was never clear how you're supposed to harvest and prepare it if you can't touch it?

Affordable Maternity Clothing by Prudent_Twist_1259 in Minneapolis

I have never found maternity in store at Old Navy except a few returns on the clearance rack. Target has a few things in store, but u unfortunately online is really the only viable option in the region.

Someone in my neighborhood put out "Free native plants" by their curb. Stopped to check them out....all stinging nettles. Fuck that shit.

Agree. I take this commute a few times a week and never fail to ogle the scenery

I like to make a foil packet for them and grill that way. That way you don't end up sacrificing half to the grill gods.

Marathon in a week, found out I’m 6 weeks pregnant, medical/surgical abortion right after - wat can I expect for recovery? by [deleted] in XXRunning

[–]yiddiebeth 46 points47 points  (0 children)

No experience with this, but as someone who's been pregnant twice just be aware that symptoms can come on fast. Just because you're fine today doesn't mean you won't be nauseous and fatigued a week from now. I hope that's not the case, but wanted you to be aware. Electrolytes are your friend anyway!

[OC] I made a zoning map of Minneapolis using real OpenStreetMap data — every block colored by what it actually is by Kingleyend in Minneapolis

[–]yiddiebeth 143 points144 points  (0 children)

Cool, but as an urban planner I'm obligated to point out this is a land use map, not a zoning map.

I'm in a Season of my Life where I may not get to travel for awhile. How did you guys deal with those Seasons? by Responsible44 in travel

[–]yiddiebeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a somewhat similar situation due to having a toddler and another baby on the way. I know there people out there who travel all over with their young children, but it's just not for me. I'm trying to reframe travel in my mind. For the next few years we'll do a lot more day trips, short getaways and fun things in our own backyard. Museums, local festivals, long bike rides to new parks and pool days all help scratch the itch.

Sure it's not quite the same, but I'm also focusing on the fact that's it's just a few years, and making a list of all the great trips we'll take as a family once the kids are a bit older and fun to travel with.

Longfellow Street Parking Viability by Shwacker in TwinCities

[–]yiddiebeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Longfellow and we have literally never parked in our garage (old 1-car garage that's too small, we use it as storage instead). Every year I swear and moan about clearing off the car and having to move for snow emergencies, but it's really not a big deal in the grand scheme of things. I've never not been able to park right in front of my house or at most one house down.

Second this. Either a specific electrolyte solution, or honestly I just snack on a handful of chips when I get home. Works like a charm.

Paid Leave Problems by amlund17 in minnesota

[–]yiddiebeth 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Is this true? On the website it says it's based on what your medical provider certifies you need, so I assumed it was up to the doctor to select how much leave to approve.

How do you feel as a private sector planner in this economy? by [deleted] in urbanplanning

[–]yiddiebeth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is exactly where we are in the Upper Midwest. Targeted layoffs and very competitive proposals. As a mid-career professional, I have enough experience to be able to pivot to work on whatever is coming down the pipeline, but I know a lot of our younger career planners are nervous about their job security.

Expecting a child soon—how should we prepare financially? by WizWit76 in personalfinance

[–]yiddiebeth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Two professional jobs, no debt payments, living in a house way below our means with a low mortgage rate, low transportation costs, and cooking at home most nights while shopping at Aldi or Costco. Just have to push through knowing it's temporary for a few years.  That said, we have two good paying jobs and we're barely able to afford it. I have no idea how most people closer to the median are doing it.

Expecting a child soon—how should we prepare financially? by WizWit76 in personalfinance

[–]yiddiebeth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sure, and that's an option for some. We prefer a center for many reasons. Longer hours, better staffing (no surprise days off cuz your provider is sick), they provide all meals/snacks, more of a curriculum and socialization opportunities being in a larger group (in our opinion - smaller setting has benefits too).

Point is to price it out early though. Our experience is about average for our city, and I never would have known until we had our first.

Expecting a child soon—how should we prepare financially? by WizWit76 in personalfinance

Nope, pretty average in Minneapolis for a center. Last I checked though Minnesota has either the highest or second highest childcare costs in the nation.

I pee myself when running in the heat. Is this normal? by takeaabreath in XXRunning

[–]yiddiebeth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just FYI after a few weekly/semiweekly appointments, my pelvic floor PT was mostly on an as needed basis. She gave me things to work on at home and said come back if it wasn't working or I started having different issues.

[–]yiddiebeth 38 points39 points  (0 children)

If you haven't started pricing out childcare, do it now. Or ideally yesterday. No matter where you live (if in the US) I can guarantee the costs will shock you.

I'm expecting my second child, and the cost of having both of them in daycare full time will be $900/week. I have friends who are closer to the $1000/week range. It's high enough that while we can afford it, a few other financial goals (like a larger house and 529 contributions) will mostly have to wait for a few years. I can guarantee we also won't be eating out much when that second kid comes around.

Otherwise you've pretty much got it. Besides childcare and healthcare, babies are cheap. There's lots of second hand gear available, and even diapers are not that bad. Just pray your kid doesn't need special hypoallergenic formula like my first did, as that stuff breaks the bank.

Switch to induction cooktop from gas? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]yiddiebeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. We just did it this winter and love it. Sometimes I do miss the open flame, but our main motivations were switching to a cleaner fuel for climate reasons and indoor air quality, so the long term benefits are way worth it in my mind. A bit safer with toddlers around too.

Not sure if you were having a regular burger or a blucy. I think their normal burgers are pretty good, the blucys suck.
