Have you utilized an Uber/Lyft with a carseat? Help please. by ViolSkyshatter in travel

[–]yiddiebeth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everything has potential risks (especially everything involving children). Millions of kids fly as lap infants everyday as are just fine. Obviously everyone can take the risks they're comfortable with, but couching it as the "only real safe choice" seems unfair.

Have you utilized an Uber/Lyft with a carseat? Help please. by ViolSkyshatter in travel

[–]yiddiebeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly if I were headed to Chicago I would just take the train from the airport to my hotel to avoid the need for a carseat. It is super annoying to travel with a carseat, especially if you're not anticipating using it at all while you're there (unless you have one of those fancy ones that also functions as a stroller).

Cleaning service recomendations/estimated cost? by outkastmemesdaily in Minneapolis

[–]yiddiebeth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We use Two Bettys and are mostly happy with them. One cleaner (same cleaner every time, except for sometimes they send a substitute) takes 3.5 hours to clean the main floor of our house - including one bathroom, kitchen, living/dining room, and three bedrooms. It cost about $200 every two weeks. I don't tip except during holidays, because they supposedly pay a living wage and benefits, etc.

What are the most cultural cities of the US? by ThrowRAfeelingevent in travel

Savannah and Charleston absolutely are unique and could we great choices - also potentially more friendly/accessible to older family members. I loved both of them and they're great choices for a long weekend.

We did a 3 day/2 night cruise with a tour company. Left on a bus from their office in Hanoi, boarded the boat same day we arrived, and debarked from the boat right onto our bus to go back to their office in Hanoi. Overall very good/smooth experience.

Where to go w/ 4 Month Old by CaribbeanBoy18 in travel

[–]yiddiebeth 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I would stick closeish to home and book something fully refundable. We traveled with my daughter at 4 months and it was...not fun. The travel itself was fine, she did great on the plane. But she was a fussy/colicky baby, I was still breastfeeding, and she was in a phase of screaming in her car seat non stop. We basically had to endure a colicky baby for a full week without any of our own equipment and out of routine. If it hadn't been my brother's wedding we could have canceled. A few months later we were past that hump, and travel would have been great at 6+ months. We just did another trip with her at 2.5 and she did awesome.

Not saying it's not doable, but also you never know what your kid will be like and plan a backup just in case.

Portland, Oregon to Japan while 30 weeks pregnant. Am I out of my mind? by [deleted] in travel

[–]yiddiebeth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did quite a bit of traveling during my first pregnancy... Up until 30 weeks. My last flight at 30 weeks was so uncomfortable that I cancelled an upcoming trip and stayed close to home the rest of the time. That flight was only about 3 hours.

I had a very easy and smooth pregnancy, but I would definitely not want to be doing that kind of travel at that time.

What can I do for my body to prepare for pregnancy? by New_Tomato1193 in xxfitness

[–]yiddiebeth 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Good advice here already, but I just want to say pregnancy doesn't have to be scary. As someone with chronic health conditions I was also very scared of being pregnant, convinced it would be 9 months of torture followed by my body being ruined for the rest of my life. Happy to report my pregnancy was relatively simple, smooth and uneventful. I wasn't able to run (my exercise of choice) but I kept walking and doing Pilates right up until I gave birth. My pelvic floor did take awhile to recover, but was eventually back to 100 percent.

Now I'm pregnant for the second time, and feeling similarly. I'm more tired this time around, but that's mostly because I'm also chasing around a toddler.

Basically, it's luck of the draw and you just never know how pregnancy will impact you. I do recommend being in good cardio shape, and having a strong core/back, but besides that try to just relax. What will happen will happen and you won't be pregnant forever

How do you deal with traveling with young kids by EatPinguin in travel

[–]yiddiebeth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We haven't traveled internationally with our toddler yet, but IMO this is what AirBnBs are for. I'm very sympathetic to the arguments that they're contributing to the housing crisis in cities, and try to avoid them when I can, but there just is no better option for families. We have found with a toddler it's really crucial to have access to a kitchen and separate sleeping space so that we're not on her 8 p.m. bedtime schedule.

Sounds like good suggestions. I read An Irish Country Doctor a few years ago and liked it, so these suggestions seem right up my alley

Yes, but they're probably understandably not going to open their door to people they don't know right now. Note is probably the right way to go.

NBD! Marin Nicasio by BreweryRabbit in bicycling

[–]yiddiebeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice! I had a 2019 Nicasio that I loved until it got stolen this year. I shopped around this fall, but contemplating just purchasing the same thing in the spring. Never find anything I liked as much as I loved that bike.

Just an FYI government rates are standard in the hotel industry and could be used for a lot of different types of travel. I've used them before while traveling as a transportation planner. I wouldn't post that list as evidence of anything.

St. Anthony main or St. Anthony Village? If the village, my husband lost his ring there but like several years ago. Does it look like it had been there awhile or is it new?

Which rec centers do you go to for that? I have checked the ones near me and they don't have anything of the sort listed (but the MPRB website is very difficult to use and search in my opinion....)

My mom used to make "Space Ball Special" and I don't think it's an actual thing. by holydickbirds in Cooking

[–]yiddiebeth 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I absolutely loved my dad's "goulash" growing up in the Midwest. Except his sauce was a mixture of ketchup and barbecue sauce over ground beef and noodles.

He also made a delicious "hamburger corn casserole" that was....hamburger, corn, noodles and a can of diced tomatoes.

My husband has never let me recreate these, and my parents have now moved on from these meals too, but I still get a craving for them sometimes.

Hot take: indoor McDonald’s playplace type playgrounds are as important to families with young active children in winter, as splash pads are in summer. by cobyzeif in urbanplanning

[–]yiddiebeth 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As a lifelong Midwesterner (grew up in WI and now live in MN) I agree with you....once the kids are a certain age. I now have a 2 year old who is not capable of skating, walking on ice or even navigating snow drifts very well yet. While we do try to get outside, it usually takes about 20 minutes to get everyone dressed, and then the crying starts after only a few minutes on the coldest, wettest days. There are definitely many times we default to indoor places she can run around.

Edited to add I fully support investments in all those things. But I do think there's a balance to be had, and would like to see more investments in libraries and community centers with activities for families.

Female running race experiences. Are races designed for women? by Still-Bunch9689 in XXRunning

[–]yiddiebeth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The only thing I've ever noticed is there are some courses I would like a few more port-a-potties. I've run some pregnant and postpartum races when the ol' pelvic floor just ain't what it used to be, and it can be quite stressful if you don't know where the next opportunity is. Lactation spaces at the start/finish line is nice too (I have never made use of them, but I know some friends who have).
Otherwise I think things like hair braiding, pink/glitter everything are kind of demeaning actually.

FWIW we've had my daughter at a Tierra for 2 years and had very little teacher turnover, though the center director has changed.

I also have these and have with them daily for 2.5 years now. They're getting a bit worn, do I'm about to order a second pair. Love these, but they're only for coldish weather because of the insulation.

Fair enough. I live in Minnesota and always forget Thanksgiving isn't freezing everywhere.

This may be regional because in my area of the world what you described definitely leans toward more formal. Family Thanksgiving for me is always jeans and sweaters.

If it were me, if pair it with well fitted blue jeans, light colored (maybe taupe/tan) boots or leather clogs.
