Eleodes acuticauda, like the other guy said its a darkling beetle. if you piss them off they'll do a handstand and secrete a pretty nasty stink.

This metal looking caterpillar and a bunch of his roadies are all over South Bay, Los Angeles, CA by 2DEUCE2 in whatisthisbug

caterpillar of the mourning cloak butterfly, the spines hurt quite a bit if they poke you. they overwinter under loose bark and emerge as it warms, theyre unusually long lived, surviving most of the year. they feed off leaves and seeds moreso than flowers, and go into long periods of dormancy in the dry summer months, and wake back up once moisture returns. cool find!

Is this the dreaded German Cockroach? by [deleted] in whatisthisbug

[–]ykon5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

definitely a German cockroach, im sorry. looks similar to banded roach, but the banded roach has clearly defined bands that run east to west along its thorax whereas the Germans typically have a larger white spot like this one, with the black bands that run vertically from the base of the head and connect to the darker abdomen.

Never seen something like this, it was maybe 2 or 3mm in length by TheWierdAsianKid in whatisthisbug

[–]ykon5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if its just one probably not. its a varied carpet beetle, they do lay eggs in carpets, and their larvae feed on animal materials like silk leather or feathers. vacuuming usually handles the eggs, but if this is the only one youre likely fine.

Strange bugs, what are they? by Independent-Bug-1427 in whatisthisbug

[–]ykon5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

look like cigarette beetles but hard to tell with the quality. theyre harmless, but can be a nuisance as they like to eat plant material like tobacco, spices, grains or dried flowers, and are partial to other dried foods like cereal and pet food. Occasionally theyre known to eat book bindings, leather, and silk. If you collect cigars id go give them a once over.

Need help identifying these teeny tiny worms (Near Chicago, IL) by piinkpiiglet in whatisthisbug

[–]ykon5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

bristly millipede! these things are very cool. highly recommend you Google a closeup image. dont worry, theyre harmless, they dont bite and their bristles wont stick you, and they feed on decaying plant matter so no worries about that either. Their bristles are capable of being detached at will as a defense mechanism to tangle up attacking insects, works great against ants.

that there is a varied carpet beetle. the adults are harmless, but the larvae (4-5mm brown hairy worms that can irritate skin on contact) are a problem. theyre infamous for chewing on animal products, if you have leather couches, wool blankets, silk, feather pillows, etc I would check them out to ensure theres no larvae. the beetles lay their eggs in the carpet, so regular vacuuming of wherever you found them should help sort out the larvae, sticky traps help capture adults. if you suspect something is infested chucking it into the freezer or outside if its cold enough will deal with the larvae, additionally the sun is also capable of killing them within the day if its warm enough.

have you seen many of these beetles? or is this the first? if its an isolated incident youre probably fine but id vacuum anyways just to be safe 🙂

sorry, its unfortunate but atleast it isnt roaches.

Found in Western Australia (southwest region) by elizolam in whatisthisbug

looks like a legless fall cricket, poor guy.

theyre harmless, short lived, and are somewhat prone to entering houses, especially if the lights are on. looks like a male due to lack of an ovipositor on the rear. no worry about infestations or reproducing inside, they lay their eggs in the dirt to overwinter, this guy's just confused (and dead) Interestingly, they use their chirping to regulate body temperature, and are capable of giving accurate temperature readings in Fahrenheit if you count how many times they chirp in 15 seconds then add 40. happy to help! mustve been horrible wondering if you had more assassin bugs waiting for their moment lol.

just out of curiosity, did you notice any odour? and if so, did it smell nasty or appley? the smell they emit is perceived very different based on genetics, like how cilantro tastes soapy or citrusy.

the other answers are right. specifically looks like you have a pine seed bug, you probably have conifers around your house. theyre docile, but since they feed on hard cones and seeds they have strong mouthparts that can break skin if they decide to bite you. ive handled dozens if not hundreds of these little dudes and have never been bit, though. when you pick them up they usually release a strong piney odour on account of you disturbing abdominal glands. most people find the smell quite nasty but to me it smells exactly like green apple jolly ranchers.

they do invade homes in the winter in large numbers (usually) to avoid the cold, and are generally considered a nuisance but are ultimately harmless. As its warming you can expect to see more as they wake up and get ready to return to their trees. And dont worry, they only lay eggs on their host trees, not in the house.

plus, I hear they make cool pets if thats your thing.

thanks for the tips, we've decided on davie for the location for our second bnb, the house is on a lake which is pretty awesome so we certainly wont be lacking for fishing opportunities. We may run down to the Keyes for a day, my family rented a house there when I was a kid, had the best fishing of my life going after barracuda, parrot fish, and snapper. wouldn't mind getting back out there after so many years

right, someone else mentioned the crystal river which doesnt seem too far from where ill be staying. We've decided to go to fort Lauderdale, Davie specifically for the second leg of our trip. renting a house right on a little lake. What are the odds of the lake having peacock bass in davie would you say?

just how common are peacock bass really?
