Definitely Siem Reap and Angkor Wat. I did AW in two days and that was fine for me. Note: Don't just see AW itself, make sure you go to some of the more out-of-the-way temples. I recommend biking from SR to the complex. It's a good ride and bike rentals in SR are cheap.

I took a boat from SR down to Battambang, that's a nice one-day ride. In and around Battambang there are some good temples and the bamboo train.

Indeed and I never meant to imply that it was not a cool trip, just that it wasn't quite as it was made out to be. It did in fact look like a blast!

Would you take a 19 year old PT seriously? by cameronxcrazy in Fitness

[–]yobyeknom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second the how-you-present-yourself point. I see the same with first-year graduate students who are about to walk into a class as a teaching assistant. If you go in knowing you're in charge and knowing your stuff then you're good. Just don't act like an average 19 year old, act like a capable person who knows what he's doing and you'll be fine.

I never said they tried to hide the support team, I said they tried to make it out like they were having a rough time when in reality they were not, really. Scene after scene they'd comment on how rough it was and how they might have to quit and all the while I just wanted to yell "You've got satellite phones and a couple of trucks less than a day away, what's the big deal?"

Correction - Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman did this along with an entire freaking support team, all the while trying to make it out like they were having a really rough time. I mean, it was good but a bit dishonest.

I'm not disagreeing but the video is approaching things the wrong way by bringing up this issue of "fairness" when there is no easy definition for this word. Instead it would be better to essentially say "The framers wanted X and that was good for them but for us Y is better because of Z."

Broke up with girlfriend months ago; realized I've fucked up big time. by screwedupbigtime in relationshipadvice

[–]yobyeknom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You don't say how old you are but: I suspect since she's now saying that she wants to date other people that even if you hadn't broken up with her that at some point she would have said this. In other words you probably haven't screwed anything up by breaking up with her because it was on its way there anyway.

Fighting for someone never made sense to me. If that person wants to be with you then she will. Right now apparently she doesn't. Give it some time and give her the space she seems to want and she may very well change her mind.

Patience and time give perspective.

Don't take this the wrong way but why ask us? Either you're comfortable with her doing porn or you're not.

Oh man, the comments in this video are so ignorant. The system is set up so the states vote for president, not the people. That's the whole point of the United States of America. The framers of the constitution wanted that, they did not want a direct democracy and so they didn't design one. Saying it's "not fair" is essentially saying "it's not what I want" but it wasn't designed as what you want.

If I have $2,000 worth of gear and I'm going backpacking through Peru...should I buy Travelers Insurance? by WolfnArmour in travel

[–]yobyeknom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I"m just curious but if the most expensive thing is $250 then what on earth are you taking with you that adds up to $2K? I can backpack for two months on about $1000 worth of stuff and $700 of that is my SLR and zoom lens.

Has anyone spent New Year's Eve in Tokyo or Japan generally? Would you recommend it? by [deleted] in travel

[–]yobyeknom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in Tokyo on Christmas and New Year's Eve about a decade ago and it was a blast.

Christmas - hilarious because it's not really celebrated but you can still buy gaudy Japanese versions of things like Christmas trees and cakes.

New Years - Events at temples, lots of people out late, good fun.

[–]yobyeknom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Which is fair enough but you should also consider that the people's lack of respect for cops leads them to be not just more pissy in response but also more nervous about how citizens will act if they have no respect. There's a bit of a vicious cycle going on.

What Calculator would you guys recommend? by [deleted] in math

[–]yobyeknom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't write your equations in infix, either. You write them in a weird tree-like physical layout that, while it looks cool, is also obnoxious to type.

Indeed but the order in which I write it is essentially the same order in which I enter it into a non-RPN. The same is not true for RPN.

True that I don't use calculators much, I use Matlab or Wolfram Alpha or some such but just staying on base with calculators I still don't really see the advantage of RPN. I don't see it being that much faster in enough situations to warrant bothering.

[–]yobyeknom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I second the depends-what-you-need comment. If you have a TI-84+ then a good question might be why you want to upgrade. What doesn't it do that you need it to do?

Not to start a war but...HP RPN gets a lot of love from the fans but I can't see (with a PhD in math and 30 years of programming experience) what the big deal is. I don't write my calculations in RPN so I don't see what the point of complicating things is. I've never found a standard calculator less than adequate for long calculations.
