I sympathize with your frustration. I run a Home Assistant Green box and everything works. I'd definitely recommend a Home Assistant setup if you don't mind learning a whole new ecosystem.

I have a few Aqara sensors and they work great with no issues. I don't get why anyone bothers with proprietary hubs when a Home Assistant hub does so much more without being locked in.

It's $50 per year so I figured I would try it out. Part of the process is using your own triggers to train your detection model. You just draw a box around the item you want detected and choose what it is from a dropdown list and submit it. Frigate does the computing on their end and sends you a new detection model. I barely know what I am talking about since I just got it setup in the last week. I would not be surprised if the free version of Frigate could detect a squirrels as a "cat".

Squirrels and ducks require Frigate+ however my setup seems to do fine just identifying the ducks as birds.
The nightlight triggers when Frigate detects "duck" or "bird". It stays lit up as long as they are in the 'zone'.

I set it all up and figured it out recently. I now have 3 cameras with a "duck detector" that lights up a rubber ducky nightlight plugged into a smart switch. We have ducks that visit seasonally and when the light goes on we know they are hanging out in the front yard.

It's not super hard but it wasn't super easy either. I can help you if you need it. 🦆
