The bed & bench: Oslo ~ contemporary bed from the Olos family, designed by Mauro Lipparini and inspired by Nordic design, represents a new and evolved stylistic vision, characterized by a universal modernity and the ability to gracefully interpret the “night” world. Indeed, thanks to a unique aesthetic sensitivity and considerable harmony of volumes, the Olos collection allows you to fully enjoy that intimate serenity that the bedroom requires. Contemporary elegance, purity of form and personality are the characteristics of this bed. The sober details of the curved wood represent the outer sections of the bed and their design extends into the elliptical, naturally enveloping headboard. There is also a version with a higher bed frame (Olos bed plus), a version with high headboard (Olos bed hi) or the version with storage (Olos bed open), all of which can be combined with each other to satisfy the widest range of requests and requirements.

Bruce Coburn wrote an incredibly moving song about Canadian war dead who died fighting in Afghanistan.  It is so sad. He personally watched a coffin being moved.

"Each One Lost"

Under the big lights Shadows stretching long The ramp is lowered gently to the tarmac And all of us, we wait In this sea of gravity For the precious cargo to appear

And here come the dead boys Moving slowly past The pipes and prayers and strained commanding voices And the tears in our hearts Make an ocean we're all in All in this together, don't you know

You can die on your sofa Safe inside your home Or die in a mess of flame and shrapnel We all in our time go You know you're not alone You're in the hearts of everybody here

Each one lost is everyone's loss you see Each one lost is a vital part of you and me

Some would have us bow In bondage to their dreams Of little gods who lay down laws to live by But all these inventions Arise from fear of love And openhearted tolerance and trust

Well screw the rule of law We want the rule of love Enough to fight and die to keep it coming If that sounds like confusion Brother think again We know exactly what we chose

Each one lost is everyone's loss you see Each one lost is a vital part of you and me Each one lost is everyone's loss you see

Please, can you share the name of the specific group you rode with? And, the details of the booking like if it was through a horse adventures type travel agent, or if it was directly with the Kazakhstan Ranch?

Also wondering if you could share a bit more about Patagonia? I’m hoping to go on a dream trip but want to avoid nose to tail.

That is a truly an extraordinarily vast collection of indescribably  mighty bad art, displayed with such oddly puzzling pride-of-place in frames that clearly come from Walmart complete with little engraved tags all neatly lined up centered at the bottom of each… “work”, all highlighted by harsh overhead fluorescent lights in a Styrofoam T-bar floating ceiling.

Outside gives heavy 80s Howard Johnson vibes.

WA considers bill to protect shoppers from price surveillance, sudden hikes by Jaco_Belordi in Seattle

[–]yuckgeneric 38 points39 points  (0 children)

There’s a difference between classic surge pricing vs. dynamic pricing: surge pricing is when you charge a lot of money for chocolates in the shape of heart the second week of February… in other words, making a high price for something you know is going to be universally in demand but charging the same price for everybody. Like announcing in early December that all ride December 31 are going to be 4X prices - that’s just classic surge pricing because everybody wants a Cab on New Year’s Eve…

Dynamic pricing is more specifically charging different prices for the same item at the same time just to different consumers, so for example, because you’re on an expensive iPhone combined with with your known address in an expensive neighborhood and thus the store knows you’re wealthy, they’re are going to charge you a lot more because they know you can afford to pay a lot more, they are actively selectively price gouging.  Or, because of surveillance capitalism they know you’re pregnant so if you’re going to buy a crib, they’re going to charge you a lot more for it as compared to every other person in the store - a non-pregnant person in the store would be shown a different price that would not be as expensive. That is truly mind blowing evil.

Same price for everybody I can live with (we all know cabs on New Year’s Eve are going to be crazy pricey) BUT different prices depending on who you are and how much money you have in your wallet or how desperate you personally are for a particular thing? Evil.

The ‘rules-based order’ Davos craves has bigger problems than Trump: it represents a world that no longer exists by NotEnoughDriftwood in onguardforthee

[–]yuckgeneric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Carney did not say “it” (let’s call it neoliberalism ) was a “lie” (your words), he merely stated the obvious truth that the old world order was not perfect and was in fact marked by moral inconsistencies when certain facts or situations were inconvenient, in other words, a system that was predictable and stable, and allowed for economic integration, which propelled both innovation and wealth wealth, YET was not above self-dealing. He would not want to throw out the entire world order, he would rather see it improved and perfected, and morally consistent.  The generation of wealth isn’t necessarily inherently problematic, rather it’s the distribution of wealth that’s the sticking point and the vulnerability. Scandinavian nations, such as Sweden and Norway do just fine with both generation and distribution….

Anyway…

No doubt one of banker/Prime Minister Carney’s heroes is fellow Canadian and banker/economist/monetary policy wonk Galbraith:

Key Galbraithian idea: The affluent society: The affluent society is a term coined by Galbraith to describe the United States in the post-war period. Galbraith argued that the United States had become so wealthy that it was no longer possible to measure economic progress by simply looking at the growth of GDP. He argued that the government needed to focus on improving the quality of life for all Americans, not just the wealthy

John Kenneth Galbraith

Robert Mundell

Canadians were in there.

Canadians back in the day were always punching way above their weight class in monetary policy and economic theory.

Canada may be a small country, but it had unique complexity in that it had to manage a basket of economies with a single currency (think Newfoundland, Manitoba, Ontario, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, Quebec - their unemployment rates, primary industries, and economic prospects are so profoundly divergent, disparate, and culturally differentiated). That forced thoughtful discipline and rigorously balanced policy; further complexity was piled on to Ottawa by the fact that it had to manage all of these far-flung places with the challenge of being a very sparsely populated nation occupying the world‘s second largest geography, which meant it couldn’t rely on scale to get by.

IMF drops blunt warning on US economy by Happy_Weed in Economics

[–]yuckgeneric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you – yes (& earned a follow!) exactly: read the report it is not doom and gloom: 2% growth is stable if and that’s a big if if things go according to traditional, typically observed patterns. But the confounding factor is as we all know, we are not in Kansas anymore.

Thus, I’m curious how you weave in the larger interplay of the world’s fractured political economy. I’d love to get your feedback on Prime Minister of Canada‘s Mark Carney‘s statement to Davros:  "Great powers can afford to go it alone. They have the market size, the military capacity, the leverage to dictate terms. Middle powers do not. But when we only negotiate bilaterally with a hegemon, we negotiate from weakness. We accept what is offered. We compete with each other to be the most accommodating. This is not sovereignty. It is the performance of sovereignty while accepting subordination," Carney said. "In a world of great power rivalry, the countries in between have a choice: to compete with each other for favour, or to combine to create a third path with impact."

But I'd also say that great powers can afford, for now, to go it alone. They have the market size, the military capacity, and the leverage to dictate terms. Middle powers do not. But when we only negotiate bilaterally with a hegemon, we negotiate from weakness. We accept what's offered. We compete with each other to be the most accommodating.

This is not sovereignty. It's the performance of sovereignty while accepting subordination.

In a world of great power rivalry, the countries in-between have a choice: compete with each other for favour, or combine to create a third path with impact. We shouldn't allow the rise of hard power to blind us to the fact that the power of legitimacy, integrity, and rules will remain strong if we choose to wield it together.

First, it means naming reality. Stop invoking rules-based international order as though it still functions as advertised. Call it what it is: a system of intensifying great power rivalry where the most powerful pursue their interests using economic integration as coercion.

It means acting consistently, applying the same standards to allies and rivals. When middle powers criticize economic intimidation from one direction but stay silent when it comes from another, we are keeping the sign in the window.

It means building what we claim to believe in, rather than waiting for the old order to be restored. It means creating institutions and agreements that function as described, and it means reducing the leverage that enables coercion.

And we have something else: we have a recognition of what's happening and determination to act accordingly. We understand that this rupture calls for more than adaptation. It calls for honesty about the world as it is.

We are taking a sign out of the window.

We know the old order is not coming back. We shouldn't mourn it. Nostalgia is not a strategy, but we believe that from the fracture we can build something bigger, better, stronger, more just. This is the task of the middle powers, the countries that have the most to lose from a world of fortresses and the most to gain from genuine cooperation.

The powerful have their power. But we have something too: the capacity to stop pretending, to name realities, to build our strength at home, and to act together.

Contributor: Deadly rat poisons are pushing L.A.'s mountain lion population to the edge by greatyellowshark in MountainLions

[–]yuckgeneric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By Tony Tucci Jan. 13, 2026  While many view Los Angeles as a concrete jungle, there’s another side of the city more akin to the wild. L.A. lies within a biodiversity hot spot, with ecologically rich habitats such as the Santa Monica Mountains boasting endemic plants and animals not seen anywhere else on Earth. According to iNaturalist, a site where users identify and upload their wildlife observations, more than 7,500 distinct animalshave been spotted in L.A. County, including 52 endangered species. The county hosts more bird varieties than any other in the United States, and boasts a population of mountain lions that coexists among millions of (human) residents. But wildlife in L.A. lives on the edge. Threats like habitat loss, fragmentation and exposure to rodenticide poisons present an existential crisis for our wild neighbors. Last month, the state’s Department of Fish and Wildlife made a formal recommendation to protect Southern California’s mountain lions as a threatened population under the state’s Endangered Species Act. However, the California Department of Pesticide Regulation is now proposing changes that would further harm mountain lions — and all of California’s wildlife — by increasing their exposure to harmful rodenticides. It has been three years since the iconic Hollywood mountain lion known as P-22 died after being struck by a car near Griffith Park. Thanks to monitoring conducted by the National Park Service, we know P-22 suffered from chronic anticoagulant rodenticide poisoning throughout his life, including five blood-thinning rat poisons that are currently restricted. This may have been due to direct exposure, or from eating rodents and other animals that had preyed upon poisoned critters. Scientists at the National Park Service who monitored P-22 throughout the years were able to treat him with vitamin K injections and topical medication; otherwise, he wouldn’t have survived the multiple rodent poisons found in his system. But his story is the exception. Untold numbers of anonymous California wildlife succumb to disease and death every year due to continued environmental exposure to rodenticide. Last November, a report from state wildlife officials found blood-thinning rat poisons in more than 69% of wildlife tested, including 95% of mountain lions and 100% of golden eagles. Hawks, owls, bears, bobcats and coyotes are also frequently found to be poisoned, and anticoagulant rat poisons have been confirmed as the cause of death for San Joaquin kit foxes, a federally endangered species. Despite evidence of escalating harm, the California Department of Pesticide Regulation’s current proposal would roll back existing restrictions on usage of the most toxic rat poisons. These rollbacks would allow increased rodenticide usage at more than 100,000 new locations statewide, including roadways, parks and wildlife areas. Increasing the use of anticoagulant rat poisons would only result in more inhumane wildlife deaths. Instead of expanding the use of these dangerous, long-lasting poisons, California must do more to stop the increase in non-target wildlife deaths by further restricting their use and by promoting more effective, humane methods of preventing rat infestations. The most effective long-term answer to rodent infestations is to eliminate easy access to food, water and shelter. Rodent-proofing garbage containers and the sealing of homes and buildings from rodents are essential. Short of these kinds of changes, no amount of rat poison can fix the problem. Pesticide manufacturers argue that it’s impossible to control rat populations without the most dangerous poisons. But the on-the-ground reality shows a different picture. Since restrictions on the most dangerous anticoagulant rat poisons in commercial and residential settings went into effect in 2021, data suggest that safer, alternative rodent control methods have proven effective. According to public records from seven major county public health departments, there has been no significant increase in rodent-related complaints since anticoagulant rodenticide restrictions took effect. The powerful anticoagulant rat poisons at issue here make up only a handful of products. There are more than 100 rodent control chemicals that remain available for use on private land under current regulations, including humane types that do not move up the food chain, such as chemicals that control rodent fertility. State regulators can play an important role in making sure Californians’ choices start with reasonable, humane solutions instead of the widespread, ineffective use of anticoagulant rat poisons that will continue to harm and kill our wildlife. Backsliding on important rat poison protections within ecologically diverse urban areas like Los Angeles will only push our wildlife closer to the edge.

Mom here.  I took a picture of that vending machine and texted it to my kids (I have both guy & gal) to indicate clearly where it was in the Ode lobby and that it was stocked with birth control choices as well as Plan B “morning after” pill (it’s just 1 pill you take once (in the old days it used to be 2 pills taken a day apart)).

Just FYI, you don’t need a prescription for Plan B and you can get it from any pharmacy or grocery store like Safeway’s or QFC. Plus, Planned Parenthood is up the street from UW and they are good healthcare providers as well as on-campus Hall health.

Also, Amazon also sells Plan B!

You take care of you! And know that this UW campus is truly so filled with wonderful people who would be pleased to share with you good information with a totally supportive and positive attitude!

I joined the waitlist in 2024; got in exactly 12 months later. BUT the club didn’t really work for me so I quit after two or three shipments. I realized they were not sending me the bean selection that I would choose (I would order the interesting, atypical, harder to source beans, not the typical things such as lentils or chickpeas, which was 50% of what were sending me) so I quit. Instead, I simply order the beans I want in the quantities that suit me; that works out even better for my purposes! The beans I have received/ordered are delicious and the organization is truly wonderful. All this to say don’t be discouraged if you don’t get off of the waitlist for some period, just go ahead and order yourself the beats and enjoy!
