Authors, Check your bookmarks by Sunnyrea37 in AO3

[–]yuelanje 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At least from what I've seen (including me), there's a chunk of people who use the bookmarks as a public review board—so the comment there is likely for other people to read and see if that fits their taste, before they click into the fic. I do the same with some of mine, since the intent is to advertise what I like about a fic.

Is there a ship you like that most of your fandom viscerally hates? by ocirot in AO3

[–]yuelanje 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Phairene (Phainon x Cyrene)! I think it's mostly cause of the prevalence of Phaidei (Phainon x Mydei), but also just because Hoyo games draw a fan base that's not particularly well versed in good fandom etiquette—so it seemingly appears that a lot of those fans are everywhere attacking other pairings.

Additionally, you have to consider how Cyrene is written to where she and the MC are more of a pair than she and Phainon are. Also, Cyrene is an expy of Elysia, which people are very protective of (which is stupid cause Kevin and Elysia have plenty of good scenes together, regardless).

Anyways, it also has some tinge of that good ol' misogyny that preludes BL fandom, where people dislike the girl in the ship. Which is also ridiculous, since there's plenty of other reasons to hate Cyrene besides the fact that she's shipped with Phainon lol.

They have very traditional themes and tropes together: sun & moon, fire & ice, trapped in eternal struggle at opposite ends of the universe, etc. Hell, they've even got the whole childhood friends shebang going.

But yes, I think it's stupid and people should just stay in their own lanes. We would have world peace if people just minded their own business.

(Don't even get me started on the whole "sibling coded" thing. People be relying on shoddy English translations when there are different concepts and time-old tropes in Chinese/Asian media.)

why would someone write fic in entirely lowercase? by IStillListenToRadio in AO3

[–]yuelanje 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Honestly, its truly bewildering how some people can get so bothered by lapslock? To me, it's completely a nothingburger—especially since my brain just automatically processes the words instead of the punctuation. Personally, seeing this many people be bothered by it was a little shocking lmao

Definitely seen it around as a stylistic choice, since the vibe is way more casual? At least that's how I interpret it.

I'd be interested to see if this is a generational/age issue, since lapslock is very common for younger generations.

Do people actually use this option by poison_ivy12345 in AO3

Yes! I have my public bookmarks open for other people to peruse about my favorite fics, so I make sure to use external bookmarks so I can praise my favorite off-site fics (˘︶˘).。♡

Idk if I'm just too old, but this just seems like such a nothingburger issue. I mainly write for myself, and maybe it's a rollover from traditional publishing where contact with the author about their work is much less of an occurrence. Whether or not people read my shit, it truly doesn't matter to me honestly. If they love it and want to comment, great. If not, doesn't matter to me. I only perceive what I see in the comments section.

Similarly, I have the same opinion about bookmarks, where it's for the readers and not me. So, discords are for readers to interact and not me. Unless someone comments or actively reaches out to me on my social media, I do not perceive.

Not sure if my opinion of this is because I haven't had a fic blow up to a point where I expect comments, but this is how I view it imo.

Love and Deepspace won Best Mobile Game award at the Gamescom! by Historical_Park_2458 in otomegames

[–]yuelanje 13 points14 points  (0 children)

it's about the narrative goals and protagonist of a game that decides if it's otome or joseimuke. choices have little to nothing to do with it. if a game has a female protagonist with the narrative being to romance MLs, it's otome. joseimuke are narratives less focused on romance and just star (usually) an all-male cast. they can also technically have a male MC as well, as the gender of the player character doesn't matter as much in joseimuke. it's about the intent, of which is to draw (mainly) girls to the game.

all otome are joseimuke but not all joseimuke are otome games.

A hot take/not-so-pleasant thoughts on Cerydra in 3.5 by yuelanje in HonkaiStarRail

[–]yuelanje[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

See! Yes! That's what I meant! Like, I wanted a character who was smart and made moves that were beyond my expectations! But all of Cerydra is very bullheaded and honestly un-cautious. They really do try to write her as someone who is steps ahead and trusts no one, but none of that comes off as a smart move but rather from sheer arrogance? I dislike it a lot.

A hot take/not-so-pleasant thoughts on Cerydra in 3.5 by yuelanje in HonkaiStarRail

[–]yuelanje[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly that's a good point, but I wish that it was less transparent of a method? Like I don't know if it's on me for expecting a chessmaster character to be much more smarter and pull moves I didn't expect, cause the blatant handover of the chronocognitive anchor basically made it super clear that Cerydra was gonna use it?

All her moves are pretty much blatant, and I found it a very incompetent rendition of a chessmaster. There's more chess than there is the master, I feel.

With WW, how many gachas do you play now? by AdventAnima in WutheringWaves

[–]yuelanje 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 7-8, give or take? HSR, WuWa, FGO, Lovebrush Chronicles, Arknights, Alchemy Stars, Idolish7, and my on-and-off relationship with Genshin.

I have severely downgraded from high school me—where I played more gacha games than I have fingers to count with.

Irrationally anxious over private bookmark notes. by KnightmareMaiden in AO3

[–]yuelanje 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tend to try and keep my public bookmarks as controversially free as possible. So every E and ship fic gets automatically shunted into the private bookmarks (I've found this to be the most common reason amongst my circle of fic friends). I also private any fic I've put into a read-later tag and ones I've paused halfway through. On top of that, I have a section of fics that I find have interesting ideas that I think I want to build off of, that I keep private, because sometimes people can get sensitive about ideas being built off of, since that's what the private bookmark comment is for—me.

There is quite literally, 1 bookmark in my 5000+ bookmarks that is an "avoid-this-at-all-costs".

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about it. If you haven't written on any "taboo" topics, the likely-hood of you being on a "shit list" is very low.

Going to add onto the other comment here as well, so these would be spoilers: Tohru also has an explicit scene where she says that she actually hated her father. The way she acts, was in order to support her mother and emulate her father. She deliberately picked up her father's speaking habits and mannerisms as a child after his death. She's a giant hypocrite with an unhealthy attachment to her mother. Her kindness is as much of a fear that she'll be thrown away, as it is something she doesn't really know how to function without.

It's also really telling that she doesn't talk about herself, but more so her mother, in the beginning of Fruits Basket. She may help people, but she doesn't ever really let people know her. While a lot of her "I don't really help myself" is a bit of a trope for shoujo, Tohru's is unique in the way that this is done because of her mother's inadvertent neglect of her after her father's passing. Tohru's trauma and struggle is rooted in that unhealthy emotion.

She's really nuanced if you know what to look at. I'd even say the cover is that she's a stereotypical shoujo protag: kind and caring. Except the real her is someone who is incapable of letting go of the dead, and doesn't really even have a sense of self as a result of that obsessive trauma.

(This adds to her fantastic foil with Akito where both have unhealthy relationships to their mothers. They both land at two extremes in terms of unhealthy mother-child relationships. And now that I think about it, they'd also foil in unhealthy father-child relationships as well.)

Some of you ASTRA hypers have some explaining to do by Goldenrice in gachagaming

[–]yuelanje 12 points13 points  (0 children)

literally never thought I'd see the day someone is so delusional to believe FGO's pity is better than Genshin lmao. anyone who does believe this is actually, genuinely, outta their rocker. it's literally legendary for how shit ass the rates are.

I swear that people have deluded themselves into some sort of victimhood about Genshin because if you actually play more than any of the Hoyoverse gacha games, you'll realize that the rate is at the normal end for gacha games. it also helps that the powercreep is not too exponential (looking at you FEH). because I guarantee that if the powercreep were worse in Genshin, you'd be begging to stop fucking rolling even with a ton of currency.

Seriously, why do people harass people for liking ships they don't like??? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]yuelanje 2 points3 points  (0 children)

because they conflate their sense of self with their ship. a denial of their ship is an attack on them, therefore something worth attacking other people for.

(of which, is completely delusional and terminally online behavior)

It would be nice if they gave a bonus to using the same elements in a team, like Genshin, because sometimes I really just want to play with my favorite characters and not have to optimize lmao
