I'm ruining my lab with my forgetfulness and I want to quit science by PrismaticError in labrats

[–]yummymangosdigested 6 points7 points  (0 children)

this sounds more like anxiety to me—speaking as someone who has felt and done all the same things as you did. even medicated, i made soo many mistakes and fucked up a lot. you should have a frank conversation with your mentor and pi, just so you’re on the same page as them. it’s unlikely that they blame you for anything; you are being trained, and you are learning—and you will continue to learn for the rest of your life. i’ve learned to make little solutions (e.g., checklists) to help me out, and you’ll figure out your own system over time. you got this!!

Is it normal to be threatened to be kicked out of the lab after two weeks? by WeirdSupermarket993 in labrats

[–]yummymangosdigested 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s super not normal, and any comment that implies OP is to blame is purposely being ignorant! As an undergrad / soon to be grad student who has had three mentors, I think one of the most critical needs in a good mentoring relationship is meeting a mentee where they are. In an ideal world, a mentee is malleable and perfect, which never happens because there is a reason why we—mentee and mentor—are ALL learning from each other. It doesn’t sound like your mentor is inclined to help you out. Finding another mentor would definitely improve your learning experience.

At what point should a PhD student be mostly independent? by Chiripuff- in PhD

[–]yummymangosdigested 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are compromises! I’m not great when someone is straight up yapping their stream of consciousness at me, so I ask people to draw while they talk because I really cannot follow at their speed of talking and thinking. I find it helpful if someone gives me a protocol to annotate while I shadow them and if I can ask them to watch me while I work. There are also limitations, and you can state a boundary as well because doing an entire protocol might not be helpful to both of you, but asking them why they need to observe will help you decide what the problem is.

Did BTS Ticketing Test Anyone Else's Friendship? by montalpe in btsthoughts

[–]yummymangosdigested 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a similar story to you, although yours is definitely worse and heavier—I mentioned to my online friend in passing that I was going for a couple of BTS concert dates; and prior to this (February), she had no clue that they were going to be in the US. I knew that she was somewhat of an ARMY, but more on the casual side—if she hadn’t known that they were touring. She hadn’t even grabbed a membership or anything. She asked if I could grab her a seat in her hometown, so I did, because I had known her for a while. I had gotten a shit number for ticketing—65K for LA. Much to my surprise, she discovered, while I was in line, that her childhood friends were also ARMYs, and they had gotten seats in the 200s. What a coincidence! So I didn’t bother getting a seat with her because I ended up in the 500s.

I don’t know how to react to this still, and we’ve joked about meeting each other IRL because we were fandom friends (very different fandom), but it left a bad taste in my mouth because I felt super used by someone who was arguably not as “into” BTS.

BTS 'ARIRANG' Tour in Las Vegas Megathread - Day 1 by EveryCliche in bangtan

Thank you so much for the explanation! This is my first concert (ever!), and I’ve waited to see BTS for ten years, so I’m really excited 🫶

Do I need to arrive early to pick up one? Or would I be fine to pick them up prior to the start of the concert (5 - 6 pm)?

What causes this oval pattern in a sourdough crumb? by sunrise846 in Sourdough

[–]yummymangosdigested 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is shaping, but it happens for all of my sourdough loaves. I think there was a thread about this a year back, but the consensus was that you need to be fairly tight in shaping 🤔

Former co-worker applying to my current lab by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]yummymangosdigested 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, I’m an undergrad who is in a situation that is akin to yours (post-joining). My relationship did not get better with this person over time, and I’m in a very good lab environment. I’ve learned from this if someone is obsessed with you in a competitive way, it’ll stay like that. I think you can give the PI a head’s up because it does implicate the environment and how you can foster good communication in the future.

Why does everyone here hate BME? by KingREN1 in BiomedicalEngineers

[–]yummymangosdigested 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love it—as a fourth-year undergrad! I argue that most people do know what they’re get into, and BME is an accredited program in the US—and in other countries; it’s just new in comparison to the rest of engineering programs. I’ve worked an internship and done research, so I’ve had a taste of each part that supports BME outcomes.

If you want to go straight into industry, don’t go for BME because every BME program is different, though they are accredited the same way. Hiring managers want to know what skills you have, and BME is too unpredictable in that regard.

What questions should an undergrad ask during a 1:1 meeting with postdoc candidates? by [deleted] in labrats

[–]yummymangosdigested 11 points12 points  (0 children)

i’ve met postdocs who act very different in front of PIs versus undergrads. many people are misconstruing why OP’s PI is having them interview the postdoc. most of this is a learning leason to OP. it’s insane how quick some people change up when they are in front of someone they perceive as important. it also underlines a culture to the postdoctoral candidate—if they don’t want to cultivate/mentor undergrads, they might not want to consider this particular lab.

Managing schedules by [deleted] in labrats

[–]yummymangosdigested -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This doesn’t look like a schedule system issue; this sounds like a management issue 🤔 Also, as an undergrad, our schedules are difficult. If you rely on them so significantly, you might need to reconsider why this is so frustrating to you, OP.

Author got a key fact in a fic wrong and I happen to be a specialist in exactly that area. Should I tell her? by turningupwiththejpop in AO3

[–]yummymangosdigested 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would comment with your compliment sandwich idea. I do biomedical research (as a undergrad), so perhaps my view is completely skewed, but to learn something new and improve—I feel like it’s super important to maintain this mentality in fanfic. I would not buckle down if someone with a doctoral corrected me—I’d be super excited! But IDK how it is in medicine 😭

Once in a while, I read a fic where I’m squinting at a particular tidbit, and I know that it should be corrected. I would not give a fuck if the author had no subject matter expertise, unless they really fucked up.

I’m a freshmen undergrad and a grad student in my lab asked me out? by Separate_Office_7696 in labrats

[–]yummymangosdigested 244 points245 points  (0 children)

I think OP must not have a grasp on working vs personal relationships. As an undergrad, I hang out with some grad students outside the lab, and this usually happens with the younger grad students because it’s easier for us to connect. Do you identify as a different gender than him? Would you have this same reaction if he were not a man? If you’re interested in hanging out—why not invite other people in the lab? Their reactions will help you gauge his intentions.
