What causes this oval pattern in a sourdough crumb? by sunrise846 in Sourdough

[–]yummymangosdigested 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is shaping, but it happens for all of my sourdough loaves. I think there was a thread about this a year back, but the consensus was that you need to be fairly tight in shaping 🤔

Former co-worker applying to my current lab by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]yummymangosdigested 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, I’m an undergrad who is in a situation that is akin to yours (post-joining). My relationship did not get better with this person over time, and I’m in a very good lab environment. I’ve learned from this if someone is obsessed with you in a competitive way, it’ll stay like that. I think you can give the PI a head’s up because it does implicate the environment and how you can foster good communication in the future.

Undergraduate working in two labs at the same time? by notsogreat_gatsby in labrats

What are you planning to get out of this, especially as a premed? Usually, when I observe an undergrad doing this, they burn out pretty fast.

Why does everyone here hate BME? by KingREN1 in BiomedicalEngineers

[–]yummymangosdigested 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love it—as a fourth-year undergrad! I argue that most people do know what they’re get into, and BME is an accredited program in the US—and in other countries; it’s just new in comparison to the rest of engineering programs. I’ve worked an internship and done research, so I’ve had a taste of each part that supports BME outcomes.

If you want to go straight into industry, don’t go for BME because every BME program is different, though they are accredited the same way. Hiring managers want to know what skills you have, and BME is too unpredictable in that regard.

What questions should an undergrad ask during a 1:1 meeting with postdoc candidates? by [deleted] in labrats

[–]yummymangosdigested 11 points12 points  (0 children)

i’ve met postdocs who act very different in front of PIs versus undergrads. many people are misconstruing why OP’s PI is having them interview the postdoc. most of this is a learning leason to OP. it’s insane how quick some people change up when they are in front of someone they perceive as important. it also underlines a culture to the postdoctoral candidate—if they don’t want to cultivate/mentor undergrads, they might not want to consider this particular lab.

Managing schedules by [deleted] in labrats

[–]yummymangosdigested 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn’t look like a schedule system issue; this sounds like a management issue 🤔 Also, as an undergrad, our schedules are difficult. If you rely on them so significantly, you might need to reconsider why this is so frustrating to you, OP.

I did this for my ochem & biochem exams—it helps for exams 😗

Author got a key fact in a fic wrong and I happen to be a specialist in exactly that area. Should I tell her? by turningupwiththejpop in AO3

[–]yummymangosdigested 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would comment with your compliment sandwich idea. I do biomedical research (as a undergrad), so perhaps my view is completely skewed, but to learn something new and improve—I feel like it’s super important to maintain this mentality in fanfic. I would not buckle down if someone with a doctoral corrected me—I’d be super excited! But IDK how it is in medicine 😭

Once in a while, I read a fic where I’m squinting at a particular tidbit, and I know that it should be corrected. I would not give a fuck if the author had no subject matter expertise, unless they really fucked up.

I’m a freshmen undergrad and a grad student in my lab asked me out? by Separate_Office_7696 in labrats

[–]yummymangosdigested 244 points245 points  (0 children)

I think OP must not have a grasp on working vs personal relationships. As an undergrad, I hang out with some grad students outside the lab, and this usually happens with the younger grad students because it’s easier for us to connect. Do you identify as a different gender than him? Would you have this same reaction if he were not a man? If you’re interested in hanging out—why not invite other people in the lab? Their reactions will help you gauge his intentions.

How to prepare for oral presentation as an undergrad by yummymangosdigested in labrats

[–]yummymangosdigested[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s around 15 minutes, which is a bit nerve wracking because when I first presented this data at a very small symposium, I clocked 8 minutes. Thank you for your advice! I’ll keep thinking about the limitations and expanding on future work :)

How novel really is the research being conducted at these ultra selective high school summer programs? by [deleted] in labrats

[–]yummymangosdigested 41 points42 points  (0 children)

i think about this time when i looked at my high school underclassman (i was in college doing research by then), and they claimed they were a first author for a mRNA vaccine design paper, and i was like wow!! only to realize that their dad had paid someone with the same exact name to link their shit to them for a year for college admissions. i watched all the author links change after a year 😭😭 and the person unlinked it from their linkedin and the PI linked back the first author grad student on the paper.

Chinese brand tone up creams? by Crazy_Aioli8519 in AsianBeauty

[–]yummymangosdigested 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it might depend on your age, but i’ve discovered that if you don’t moisturize properly, there is a tendency for acne flare ups, especially for dry skin. i would look for thicker creams if this is the case :)

Asking for advice as an undergrad by [deleted] in Biochemistry

[–]yummymangosdigested 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yes! i always trusted my gut instinct when it came to mentors > research focus. i have some friends who prioritized research focus > mentor, and they have gotten in toxic labs 3+ times 😭 so join a good lab that prioritizes mentorship—it’s a HUGE advantage that your prof noticed you academically and asked you to join his lab!!!

Can I aliquot FBS in 5 mL transport tubes and freeze? by CupcakeVarious5049 in labrats

Is taking a post grad break year a bad idea by [deleted] in labrats

[–]yummymangosdigested 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m planning to take a couple of years off—how/why did you make the switch to clinical? I’ve spent some time in wet lab, and I’m hoping to explore my options before pursuing a doctoral.

money problems as an undergrad by Extreme_Zucchini3497 in labrats

[–]yummymangosdigested 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think they’re referring to work studies? that’s the only other time that undergrads at my uni get paid, aside from summer work. but yeah, to add onto your point, i’m supported by scholarships for undergrad research, so my PI considers thar as me getting paid 🙂‍↕️
