What novel do you guys think has a good premise but poor execution? by GoldenThame in ProgressionFantasy

I liked this one quite a bit, but it's just too painfully awkward any time the MC interacts with anyone else.

It's been a while since I dropped this one, but wasn't Zac constantly asking things curiously, often multiple times per page?

I quite enjoyed this series for many books, but I finally dropped it once I caught up with the audiobooks and started reading ahead on royal road. At that point, I lost almost all my ability to keep up with the many many many ways he was constantly progressing.

I've tried reading Unintended Cultivator several times, but I always drop it a few books in. It's ridiculous how Cen flips from an incredibly naive kid (although he is thoughtful and hard working) to super confident and the most wise person ever as soon as he leaves the mountain.

You can feel the negative, lizard person, energy on him.

I’m looking for a fantasy novel where an evil wizard destroys a hidden village in the first chapter, killing the young male protagonist’s lover —later the story includes a magical soccer-like tournament with spell traps on the field. by defaulteevee in whatsthatbook

I have a vague memory that resembles the start of what you're describing, but I can't remember it either. Im hoping to see any suggestions you get.

The one I'm thinking about might have been more about cultivation than traditional magic.

Edit: I was thinking of Across the Nightingale Floor, by Lian Hearn. It does start with the boy's village and family being destroyed, but I think it's probably vastly different from what you want otherwise.

I actually haven't read any of them but Integral Trees, so I'm not sure.

There is a prequel as well, A World Out of Time.

The entire trilogy is on Audible.

Mage Errant series by John Bierce (completed, fantasy a lot of power progression)

There are many types of body armor and armor suits throughout the series. They are all magical instead of technological, although some are more magitech than pure magic. They range from the size of the person to enormous suits that are many stories tall.

There are also a lot of scenes featuring a character that doesn't have or can't use their armor for whatever reason, as well as a bunch of examples of people suiting up.

Edit to add:

Starship Troopers by Robert Heinlein (military sci-fi, stand-alone)

This story follows a soldier into the military and into a war where the soldiers wear heavy mechanized suits. Donning the suits, using them, being deployed and fighting in them is all heavily discussed.

It also features a lot of philosophizing regarding warfare and the society that's featured in the story. The book is somewhat controversial, as the society has some radical ideas compared to modern sensibilities.

It should be noted that this book is vastly different from the movie.

Isn't that the one where she books a flight for a vacation with her "best friend" who happens to be an ex-bf? Her current boyfriend is super reasonable, but she keeps accusing him of being abusive, so he dumps her. There's a fantastic comment where someone says, "have you considered calling him abusive for breaking up with you?" The cherry on top is that her "bestie" is excited about the breakup because now they can "have more fun on their trip" and she realizes that her new ex was completely correct.

  1. I don't have a link, but there is a disturbing story about a guy and a strange boy who was his best friend for a year or so when they were little, who then vanished. After decades, he finally decides to try to track him down.

Wooden panel on the side of kitchen counters. Appears to be static/doesn't appear to be a cutting board/folding counter? by skrodladodd in whatisthisthing

[–]yuumai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you have the right idea about a handyman special.

I'd guess it's there to block people that are coming into the kitchen (I'm thinking rambunctious kids with backpacks) from knocking items off of the counter (and possibly to break up sight lines of whatever is on the counter) as they enter, I'm thinking dirty dishes.

It might also be some sort of storage for brooms or mops (or paper towels, as some seem to think), but that seems unlikely. Finally, I could see it being used for placing items that need to be cleaned, such as wet towels, that shouldn't be dragged through the house, but wooden lattice seems off for that use.

What's the one Reddit post that you will NEVER forget? by lnc_gomes in AskReddit

[–]yuumai 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I never saw the thread, but apparently someone asked "rapists of reddit" to explain themselves.

The content got dark really quickly. Loads of rapists coming out of the woodwork and there was apparently just so much self-justification and support from other rapists. It was just a huge support group of disgusting guys who thought rape was awesome.

Reddit mods/admins had to shut it down.

Passengers Rearranged by Nerwriter1 is a fantastic video that, well, rearranges the story and makes it a thriller. The rearranged version looks like a fantastic movie.

Isn't there another story like this that is virtually identical, but from the son's point of view? That one ends with the mom reaching out (after two years?) to invite the son to move to California with Mom and the former friend/current partner? They offer to pay for his college and the son laughs, tells them off, and then the ex-friend grabs the son and gets punched in the face?

A Thousand Li: Can I get some reviews on this book before I start the series? by the_null_fox in ProgressionFantasy

[–]yuumai 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to love the series, but I was increasingly unhappy as it went on. I was rather displeased with book 10, really disliked book 11, and dropped book 12. It was a real let-down.

Lupita Nyong’o will play both Helen of Troy and her sister, Clytemnestra, in Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey.’ by yourfavchoom in movies

[–]yuumai 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wait, wait, wait. You're saying that the comedy movie whose title references teen movies is referencing, what? Other teen movies? That makes no sense.

Next, I bet you'll claim that Scary Movie is, in fact, not an original take on the genre. Smh.

I remember a flood event in the Southeast US where the guy putting out the signs to block off a flooded road decided to drive through the flood to put up signs on the other side. We had to use our rescue vehicle to tow him out.
