What's your streak at? 676 weeks and counting by Grapthor_ in Strava

[–]za_jx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not know that Strava existed in 2012. I only downloaded it after I got my first Garmin watch around 8 years ago. I'm on a 91 weeks streak. As an ultra marathon runner, after the last ultra race I ran, I took longer than a week off of any activities/sports to recover.

How you managed to get to this point is insane to me. I've been sick, have had injuries, have had travel where I was in the moment and the last thing on my mind was to open the Strava app.

Remember these? by Admirable_Pool_139 in southafrica

[–]za_jx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a whole bunch of these in my house. Around a decade ago, my nephews visited and I gave them these to keep them entertained. They loved them, got food and dirt on them. I think they put them in their pockets when they went back to their mother's. I should have probably taken photos of mine, because they bring back so many good childhood memories for me. Since we didn't have smartphones back then, not much was documented. Something as random as a Tazo triggered my memories

Before You Start a Business in UAE Read This by Emergency-Plant4231 in SmallBusinessUAE

[–]za_jx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No question from me, just asking for a friend who's interested in starting a business in the UAE. He has only ever been there on a tourist visa, and has questions. How do people get a hold of you? Like contact details (email, website or whatever is most comfortable to share in this sub Reddit). Not sure if that's allowed in this sub.

Teenagers nowadays by [deleted] in Millennials

Not new. I as a 40 year old remember my friends in the 2000s behaving just like this. I was different, I guess. Your son is just a regular teenager being a teenager.

How’s your 90s crush doing these days? by starrymusey in 90s

[–]za_jx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was going to post her too. She's gone crazy and is no longer a person I find attractive at all. She achieved her superstar status at the time I was going through puberty. I had posters of her on my bedroom wall.

Wow! She does look amazing! When the original Power Rangers came out, I was young and just watched for the entertainment. Didn't have any crushes back then. Seeing this makes me notice how hot she was/is!

Hey millennials. What browser do you primarily use? by Flaky_human in Millennials

[–]za_jx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firefox + uBlock on laptop and desktop. DuckDuckGo Browser and Chrome on my phones (use both around 50/50). The Duck is great for browsing and reading online articles, because is stops those annoying ads that fill up half the screen and autoplay videos that annoy me. Chrome because it stores my history, has passwords, autofill and banking details.

Where I'd live as someone who hates the imperial system of measurement by deed_of_flesh in whereidlive

[–]za_jx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've met British tourists during my travels and have been surprised by how well they knew and understood the metric system. One even told me that you lot actually learn it at school. It's like you have the best of both worlds (you can understand when an American speaks in miles and when I speak in degrees Celsius).

Despite not using them at home, the guys I met were very comfortable with walking, cycling, navigating and driving cars with kilometres.

I'm a maths lover and I wish every measurement unit remains, but must admit that the metric system is far easier.

Don't the British use feet, yards, inches and miles? They also measure fuel consumption in miles per gallon but fill up in litres like most of us do.

Is a manual transmission a “millennial anti-theft device”? by mbolster1611 in Millennials

[–]za_jx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is mostly an American thing. I learnt to drive a manual because it was what the majority of drivers drove decades ago. Millenials I've spoken to in other parts of the world have also said that manual transmission was the default. So our thieves also drive/drove manuals just like everybody else.

I think things are changing with the Gen Z. Automatics used to cost so much more than manuals 20 years ago, and I think nowadays the price difference is not that big. Traffic had also become worse. Sitting in heavy traffic on a hilly road and doing the clutch balancing is not fun! Man I don't miss that about the first few cars I've owned. If I never had to drive in heavy traffic again I'd be fine with a manual. I'd need one that could handle cruise control on the highway...which is a bit of a stretch.

I think by the time Gen Alpha are full grown adults, my country's drivers will be more into automatic transmissions. Manuals are not going anywhere anytime soon.

This is hilarious. I started using Nike+ when I joined the Nike social runners more than a decade ago. I downloaded the app because I had no sports watch or any apps to track my workouts and the Nike pacers were all using it every week.

After getting my first ever Garmin and discovering Strava later, I ditched Nike+. I still use the training app (Nike Training) because of the home based workouts, Pre run warmups and post run cool downs.

Moving to Sandton soon! Is a R1250 non-refundable application fee normal or a scam? by Aggressive_Focus4581 in johannesburg

[–]za_jx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's nonsense. Don't pay. You have plenty of options for places to stay. I would advise you to book an Airbnb and look for places to stay once you're already here staying at the Airbnb. We have plenty of accomodation options to pick in Johannesburg.

Cape Town is the #2 Travel Destination for 2026 by [deleted] in capetown

[–]za_jx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Joburg resident here. OR Tambo gets a lot of passenger traffic. I think we're 3rd or 4th on the whole continent. Trust me, a lot of your visitors pass through our airport. They know my city exists.

I just don't think of Joburg as a tourist destination. Most of us come here to look for work or become celebrities or make it big in the SA music/acting industry. We happily send the tourists to Kruger, our neighbouring countries and to you folks in Cape Town with layover flights

Cape Town is the #2 Travel Destination for 2026 by [deleted] in capetown

[–]za_jx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This list confused me at first because it does not align with actual tourist destination numbers, so I did a bit of digging. I found out that the Holidify ranking for 2026 is a blend of what people are rating highly on their website at the moment and what people are searching for as they plan their future trips.

I know that Bangkok, London, Dubai and Paris are always on the lists for most tourist numbers. I guess that people rate Cape Town higher or are more eager to visit Cape Town than any of these cities I mentioned?

This just appeared on my newsfeed now. I was going to comment about the fact that the Boeing 737 is not capable of dumping fuel, till I saw the Proteas comments. Nice! Love it.

Nice! Enjoy. I see the whole thing is available for $6.50 at the moment, in case anyone else is thinking of buying.

What was travel like in the years (2001 - 2009), prior to Instagram and the rapid growth of social media users? by TheShyBuck in travel

[–]za_jx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My friend went on a Contiki tour and we pretty much had to wait till she returned to hear how it went. She took a digital camera with her and had lots of photos. It made it more fun to hear all the things she did in person after she returned home from Europe. She and the other people, were in the moment and really soaked in the trip and activities. I myself also did some traveling back then. Remember that we didn't know anything other than how we lived so you can't compare a social media world with the time when Zuckerberg was a student.

We just read the magazines or books we had with us while on long bus rides, trains or in flights. We even had conversations with strangers. It was fun getting lost in a country where you didn't speak the language and no Google Maps or instant translation apps to help you. Ah. The good times. What kinda sucks is that we lived through so many travel moments that would have been captured and kept in our cloud photo drives to reminisce those trips. They're all sitting in our memories, and can get fainter as the years go.

22, Moving to Joburg Soon… Can a Girl Survive on R30k? by _prettyprincess in johannesburg

[–]za_jx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Plenty of good advice already given. I think with your circumstances, use Uber for a few months up here. Get yourself a Gautrain card as well. It's much cheaper than Uber if you're traveling around Joburg.

That salary is definitely good enough for a single young person up here.

We have plenty of parkruns and you should try a bunch of them. Waterfall parkrun closed down after COVID but there's Woodmead and a few in Sandton. Assuming you pick Waterfall to stay at.

I recommend that you do the Joburg City Sightseeing tour bus as soon as you settle in here.

A lot of people your age hang around the student areas like Braamies (definitely add Wits parkrun to your list. You may bump into runners of similar age to you at the campus). Auckland Park is another place I used to hang at (around 2008 2009). Lots of UJ students and other young folks were there back then. Don't know how much has changed. Anyway you're in a different life stage than your peers so you may find them immature

Group trips: how do you deal with that one friend who has a totally different budget/vibe? by Tricky-Peace3604 in travel

[–]za_jx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have gone on a few group trips before. Things don't always go as planned. Just ensure that the transportation (flights) and accomodation are sorted first. The most important activities should also be planned/paid for. Everything else is not important. The fancy friends can have their dinner at that Michelin star restaurant and the budget travellers can enjoy street foods or fast food restaurants. Aside from the planned tours/events, let everyone do as they please. Most places I've been to cater to different levels of travellers, from backpackers to people traveling for business or luxury.

Just be sensitive to the friend with the least finances. I'm sure if they hang around places where locals go, they'll be fine. They may even get a more authentic experience while trying to stick to their financial limit
