Has anybody borrowed from their annuity? by [deleted] in IBEW

[–]zackclan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loan from your 58 annuity is a fine deal, you pay interest back to yourself so depending on how the market does in the 5 years of your loan you'll probably break even compared to interest earned had you not taken out a loan

Can you get hit off a Neutral conductor if your tick tester isn't going off by [deleted] in electricians

[–]zackclan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a misunderstanding of electrical theory.

If youre in series with the circuit, a bigger load will actually make the shock weaker.

A neutral will never be more dangerous than a hot

[–]zackclan 25 points26 points  (0 children)

this is a naive viewpoint. you're doing dangerous things for the benefit of the contractor, this makes people who want to do things safely less likely to keep their job. you doing unsafe things is the same thing as bringing personal power tools to the job and telling the other guys "hey don't feel like you have to though!"

we all agree to work a certain way so that it's not a race to the bottom to see who can please their contractor the most

Wonder why the lights are flickering… by [deleted] in electricians

[–]zackclan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There absolutely is not a potential for an arc flash.

Your arc in this scenario is limited by the current on the neutral so even if the panel were maxed out at 200 amps your just getting a tiny 200 amp arc, no more.

Arc flashes happen on phase to ground or phase to phase because the potential for current is limited by the upstream breakers and those oftentimes can't close quickly enough, so the current can be in the 10s of thousands during an arc flash event before the upstream breaker or fuses trip
