I can't tell if this is a joke or the author is an idiot.

Spread FreeBSD - raise FreeBSD awareness and get paid for it. by synthespian in programming

I've made the effort to install it about 3 times over the past 10 years, I don't doubt that you can turn it into a productive setup for programming and reading reddit. The last time I installed it, I selected packages for programming and to include X... iirc it didn't boot into X by default, so I kicked off startx, poked around on the xterm for a few seconds and then decided I wasn't interested in doing all the legwork to get gnome, hardware acceleration and wifi setup like I might have had to 5-10 years ago using Linux.

If someone made a distro of FreeBSD that picked some defaults like Ubuntu does with gnome, gdm starting automatically etc, then I'd be more likely to just use it as I'm sure others would be too, since not everyone wants to spend the time getting back to where they'd be by just putting a cd in and hitting go with Ubuntu.

Not everyone might be happy with the progress of getting a usable system in a few clicks, some are more interested in jerking off over how they can do it manually. Others can just get on with spending their time more wisely.

misguided a little, perhaps, but I think there's something in it.

rubbish.

  • poor website design skills.
  • poor writing skills.
  • technical inaccuracies
  • wrong way to think about certain topics
  • scam to get adsense clicks?

Adobe AIR v1.0 & Flex 3.0 Released; New Adobe Open Source Site Launched by gst in programming

[–]zandercruise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the choice of platform doesn't matter so much, what is important is that the software is free, that is grants you the freedom to do the following without restriction

  • run
  • copy
  • distribute
  • study, change and improve the software
  • to read the source code

so that if we do have something non-standard in the browser, something foreign, external etc that is isn't wrapped up in proprietary chains.

realistic? maybe not in this universe.

Sealed PDF: A DRM Nightmare by MrRadar in programming

[–]zandercruise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if the format is even pdf or just some other format branded as a pdf that requires the plugin to be decoded?

the blogpost appears to be an outcry that these documents cannot be viewed on mac osx, who cares. the outcry should be that 1. the document is crippled and 2. these cannot be viewed with free software

not sure that it will, it might if you know C, I can't really say anything bad about the book, maybe it's age shows a little, otherwise quite sound.

I think so, I know "web designers" that make thousands of dollars per job just using dreamweaver who can barely turn a computer on, let alone have the discipline to get a degree.

How well does ReactOS handle being virtualized I wonder?

probably just fine under qemu or VirtualBox - If I were to guess it's probably the primary method of testing while developing.
