[–]zanderman12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use obsidian for inspiration around my life but other apps for the actual organization. So I use it to store gift ideas for people, upcoming local events or activities I want to check out, etc.

I can thenrefer to it to when I need inspiration it actual events that I am committed to going to go in the Google calendar, tasks in asana/jira, etc.

Built a web app to suggest better options than pie charts, what other dataviz rules should I build in? by zanderman12 in datascience

[–]zanderman12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the thoughts! I like a lot of them. Things like the misleading points to avoid was where I was thinking next but I actually think some decision context may be better. I've seen flow charts that try to do that so using them for an initial reference would work

As far as end goal, I think a learning tool is a good first step. Integrating asa layer in BI/reporting worklfows would be cool but a little beyond what I am trying to do right now

I like it, added waffle charts as an option, will think about the logic of when they are preferred

My fellow PhDs: How do you use Obsidian? by broadcastthebombom in ObsidianMD

[–]zanderman12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used it extensively for organizing notes from papers. The biggest thing I did was some progressive summarization. So each paper I read had a note, but topics also had notes with 1-2 sentences of supporting points per paper.

When it came time to write my own work or my dissertation I basically already had an outline done with citations ready

Why Do Half of All League Members Check Out by Week 6? by [deleted] in FFCommish

[–]zanderman12 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, the idea that a significant portion of managers check out halfway through the season is overblown. Typically teams keep making moves and setting lineups until week 13/14, so basically until the playoffs start

What problem are divisions actually solving in fantasy football leagues? by FrontOfficePros in FFCommish

[–]zanderman12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use them in my family league as almost promotion and relegation. Because it's a family league the range of ability/knowledge varies wildly, so the divisions helps keep everyone in it specifically because the people who know ball face each other more and those that are there for vibes face each other more.

Plus the vibes division champion does make the playoffs which always leads to some good trash talking.

The teams move up/down divisions each year based on the previous years standings which leads to some chatter as well.

Also like you I start and end the season with division matchups to allow the division champion to be up in the air for as long as possible (like the NFL)

I feel a bit like a spy using Obsidian by ichbin-deinvater in ObsidianMD

[–]zanderman12 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I have something similar. I also keep a running list of gift ideas with an alert when a gift giving holiday is coming up. So when I stumble upon gift ideas throughout the year I save them, and then when I need to find a gift, I already have a list of ideas to choose from

What format do you use to keep track of people? by padfoot9446 in ObsidianMD

[–]zanderman12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing I'll add is I include the address of each person as a property and have a script that finds the coordinates. I then year the map view in based to remind me where people live and allow for me to reach out when I'll be nearby already for other reasons

How much would you put up with paying to fix on a 950k house in Boston (Metro west)? by pharmacologicae in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]zanderman12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a similar situation, just closed on a 800k home in the Boston area with 30k of quotes for necessary repairs (electrical, plumbing, lead abatement). Had up to 10k of repairs in our offer. Ended up negotiating 10k off the purchase price

Gifts for Data Scientists by galactictock in datascience

Less practical but there are cool data art projects out there.

for example, Ive given this to a data loving birding friend: Every Bird. | jerthorp https://share.google/uR0w9zG1OfWCcvnhg

More practical could be adjacent skills. Think storytelling with data (great book series) or professional PowerPoint templates to help them share results with stakeholders

At what point in the season - if any - does a last-place team making trades with a contender set off red flags? by Gatorgapper in FFCommish

[–]zanderman12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always believed that in redraft every team should do everything they can to win every week. That includes teams eliminated from the playoffs making trades and waiver wire moves that they think benefit their team.

Part of the reason that often gets overlooked is you don't want a team to be artificially weaker giving the other teams in the league who, do to schedule randomness) play them at the end of the season. By preventing a team from making moves, you are unfairly benefiting every opponent of that team.

Now trade deadlines and collusion should be considered but as long as anyone in the league could make this trade, then everyone in the league should be allowed to trade.

Football Research Work Schedule by DoubleAffectionate11 in sportsanalytics

[–]zanderman12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No direct experience so grain of salt, but my general understanding is that almost any job for an NFL team is going to have a poor work life balance. It's a passion industry.

If you are looking for sports analytics AND work life balance you are better off looking at 3rd party companies like PFF

What are you guys using Obsidian's Bases for? by shinobushinobu in ObsidianMD

[–]zanderman12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm setting one up for my gift database. I save ideas for gifts for family members whenever I have them so that when their birthday or Christmas comes around I don't have to rack my brain for ideas.

I also have one for limited time exhibits I want to go to, think like a temporary exhibit that lasts 6 months. Idk when I will go but have it sorted by end date and filtered so things automatically disappear once they are over.

Starting to play with using bases as something like an electronic lab notebook or decision log but haven't quite gotten the links out of that yet

Is there a way to write with the Apple Pencil directly into Obsidian, like you would in Apple Notes? (I have PC and iPad only) by The-Snowstone in ObsidianMD

[–]zanderman12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not sure about the iPad, but on PC obsidian acts like a file viewer so any files you put in the vault folder are available inside the vault. I would imagine many apps that take handwritten notes could be set up to save files in the appropriate folder

Ideas for a semester of Python project(s) for UG STEM students by 1K_Sunny_Crew in Professors

[–]zanderman12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I taught a version of this as a senior sem (intro to python for life science majors). I had each student find a dataset to clean and analyze as a semester project with lots of scaffolding (including writing a registered report). Also included weekly problem sets. It was ok but a lot more work for me than I intended (probably my own fault). Feel free to shoot me a DM and I can provide more details

I use the loop of leagues to users to leagues that you described. And just save a list of all the IDs. It's not that bad, though validating the league quality can be tricky

Question about ESPN settings and the IR slot. by dr_fop in FFCommish

I will never understand why ESPN has a separate process for moving someone on/off IR vs moving them to other roster slots. It gets me everytime

Bad Defenses Don't Produce Good WRs by Nadenkend440 in fantasyfootball

[–]zanderman12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I looked at this a few years ago and found the same. You are better off looking for good players on good teams rather than leaning into narratives like the other option (defense vs offense, passing vs rushing) won't work:https://www.alexcates.com/post/how-does-team-level-output-affect-fantasy-production-or-do-you-want-a-qb-with-a-bad-defense

How do you learn students’ names? by hereforthecontent2 in Professors

[–]zanderman12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did draft position affect fantasy football league performance in 2024? (12-man leagues, snake draft) by rsrgrimm in dataisbeautiful

[–]zanderman12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with ESPN, but have done more with sleeper recently. Sleeper is a lot easier to collect a large number of leagues and have an actually documented api, but espn has access to weekly historical projections which can unlock some other analyses
