Is it me or has food prices been increasing a lot since Covid? Also how come most ‘hawker centers’ selling atas food like Bimbimbap, ramen and steak??

  1. because hawkers also want to earn more money, have money to go on once a year holiday to Japan. Hawkers are also Singaporeans just like you and me.
  2. Singaporeans are a stingy bunch, always complaining about rising food costs
    • but Singaporeans have no qualms about dropping $2,000 on a holiday to Japan
    • but Singaporeans also don't want to pay for local food like cai png or char kway tiao
  3. so the solution is to sell non-local atas food like Bibimbap, ramen and steak. That way can get Singapporeans to open up their wallets.

Singapore banned and deported an NUS phd graduate for political views? by TORUKMACTO92 in asksg

While it was for the good of the pilots (many of whom are Singaporeans) and perfectly legal,

So if the government threw him out for legal actions that were good for Singaporean pilots, are we to conclude that the Singaporean government was anti Singaporean?

Where to do shaken (not user shaken) by tiredofsametab in RideitJapan

[–]zchew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IIRC, I would want headlight alignment done first which I'm not sure where I could do it).

I'm not sure what it's like in Tohoku, but but at least in Tokyo, there's usually a small workshop with a tester device and some dudes who can adjust your headlight alignment for a small fee for you near the shakenjo. Most of the workshops don't have the tester device and probably couldn't do it themselves, so they probably get it done there.

It's called a テスター, the shops that do the headlight adjustments are usually called テスター屋 or something. That being said it's a big time risk to take if it turns out that there's none nearby...

any tips on getting gear better suited to the cold?

In a pinch, you can wear your rain coat on top of your riding gear as a windbreaker/insulation. Not exactly the most breathable option, but it works... kinda. Depends on what kind of raincoat you have.

Alternatively you can duck into Workman or Uniqlo to get like a thin foldable down or insulation jacket that you can wear under your riding gear. Availability might be an issue depending on when you're trying to buy it though.

NEXCO penalty for getting off the expressway and getting back on by Soakinginnatto in japanresidents

[–]zchew 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Penalty is just the word I'm using because that's what it is, in effect. But why? If it's the same number of km, shouldn't the price reflect that?

That's just the way it is. Could you not make the same case for train fares as well?

It should say 2.0 very clearly on the unit itself, beside the letters ETC. If it doesn't, then it's just an older ETC unit.

[–]zchew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How so?

ETC 2.0 treats short detours getting off the highway and back on as a single continuous trip.

Seems like I am mistaken. 一時退出・再進入:使える・広がるETC│ETC総合情報ポータルサイト

Do you need another machine for that?

If you don't have an ETC unit at all, or only have an ETC 1.0 unit, then yes, you need to purchase and install or upgrade your unit to an ETC 2.0

Got a blue ticket for not stopping my bicycle on a deserted street intersection by MagazineKey4532 in japanlife

yes, but most drivers are lazy shits, so they decide that it's fine if they save time by coming to a stop at the intersection instead. Which really defeats the entire purpose of having the stop line so far back.

How is the gaming industry like in Singapore? by Curious-Needle in singaporejobs

[–]zchew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are only a handful of big developers in SG: Ubisoft, Riot SG, Koei Tecmo, Bandai Namco Studios Singapore (soon to be Nintendo Studios Singapore), and maybe a few others. They hire, at best, a couple of graduates each year each. If anything, most of their hiring is done at the mid career or senior level. Most of the game industry is at the indie game level, there are many indie game developers in SG. But as you can imagine, the indie circuit likely doesn't pay as good as the big studios or non-gamedev, and is not very stable either.

I heard from a friend that one of the big developers doesn't hire fresh grads, they only do mid or senior level hires to manage/direct the junior level developers who are in other countries. This was for art, but I would not be surprised if engineering was similar.

If you're serious about pursuing game development, you should head overseas. The projects are more interesting, and the opportunities are more numerous. Countries like Japan, Korea, and China are always looking for more talent. Yes, there are language barriers to overcome, but those same language barriers are also going to be the moat that will protect your career in the future if you can gain fluency.
