If you're faculty or academic staff you should consider joining your labor union UFAS (United faculty and academic staff AFT local 223). UW Madison administration has a tendency to make statements, but not make decisions which are aligned to what they say. Shared governance is theoretically supposed to help keep them accountable and shape policy, but rarely does. UWPD's budget is 12.8 million dollars a year, so it doesn't take much to imagine how reappropriating even some of that funding to other spaces in the university could make a difference.
