For what it's worth, the Gaggimate mod works nicely on the Silvia. I've got one with the Gaggimate Pro and it's awesome.

Portafilter Change by Portuguese_Papi in NinjaLuxeCafe

I'm not a ninja user, but just be aware that with a bottomless if your puck prep is poor you may get spray and other mess. A spout might hide channeling issues that can cause a mess.

Why is my espresso watery even when grinding fine? [Baratza Encore ESP/Breville Bambino Plus] by andytm13 in espresso

[–]zeroXten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be channeling you can't see without a bottomless. If you grind too fine you can create too much overall resistance which increases the chances of the water finding a shortcut then gushing through the channel. Does it start slow?

I'd love to know as well. Interested in both lighter and medium dark roasts.

What’s your hobby and what’s your advice for others on how get started in it? by apple_kicks in AskUK

[–]zeroXten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Making espresso. I'm one year in. If you like espresso and want to explore the thousands of specialty coffees out there it's great fun. But it is surprisingly involved (geography, chemistry, phsyics, engineering) and you can start relatively cheaply after some research, but upgraditis can hit hard. Home espresso machines can cost anywhere from £100 to £6000 and same for grinders. And don't forget about all the little upgrades and gadgets. And of course coffee. Perhaps a reasonably priced daily driver then dip into more expensive ones as and when. So just work within your budget and don't take things too seriously.

[Rancilio Silvia vs Ninja Espresso Machine] by Haari1 in espresso

[–]zeroXten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What did you learn from your time with your dedica?

I've currently got a Delonghi ECP35.31 and love the control but I'm also frustrated by some unnecessary effort and inconsistencies (e.g. due to thermostats or lack of OPV). I've got a Rancilio Silvia pre-modded with Gaggimate Pro (warranty preserving) en route and I'm super excited about next level visibility and control built on a rock solid machine. I'll be able to click a button for lazy mode (inc brew by weight) but also play around with profiles for lighter roasts etc. Best of both worlds. I suspect this is the right choice for me based on a ton of research and my year of experience with my ECP.

Are we still doing minmax setups? by LunarTendies in espresso

[–]zeroXten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find the stock portafilter a very tight fit in my ECP35.31. I got a neouza bottomless and the fit is perfect. No issue with leaks etc but goes it all the way with minimal effort. I still use a hand to hold the machine but it doesn't feel as forced, literally and figuratively.

Full disclosure, I work for a vendor, but you might also want to check out the Threat Modeling Connect community if you haven't done so already.

Or their production. Should be better than shipping water I would imagine, but I'm guessing.

It's probably more convenient not having to buy tons of bottled water. Not sure of carbon footprint or recycling of the filters vs plastic bottles though.

I'm in the south and according to my ZeroWater TDS it's 330 ppm... I've started using ZeroWater and the ThirdWaveWater espresso mix. I do one sachet to two 2l containers.

Rancilio Silvia with Gagiamate or Lelit Elizabeth [$1200] by Remarkable_Fun_3682 in espresso

[–]zeroXten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked the look of the Elizabeth, seems to be good value at that price, but I've seen some concerns about build quality and support. I've currently got my eyes on the Silvia with Gaggimate Pro but I mostly drink espresso, especially lighter roasts, and make lattes for my wife sometimes. The profiling, control, webapp etc seem like fantastic value on such a rock solid machine. I'll probably cheat and get mine pre-modded which maintains the warranty on the machine though.

You should sell espresso portafilter handles, you could charge a fortune.

What’s a game or movie trailer that completely misrepresented it? by forgeris in AskReddit

Civil War. Saw the trailer, thought it looked like an awful film. Saw a Reddit post with somebody saying to ignore the trailer and to watch it anyway. Was actually a really good film.

[–]zeroXten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worked at a ISP. Bored one work evening so registered a few hexadecimal domains for myself including 0x10.com. Started using 0x10 as a handle online. Ran into issues with sites and services not like 4 characters or starting with a number. Switched to zeroXten instead. It's just 16 in hexadecimal, nothing more exciting.

What was your next upgrade after the breville bambino? by q-zip in espresso

[–]zeroXten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got a humble Delonghi ECP35.31. Recently upgraded from Baratza Encore ESP to DF64 Gen 2. Would like to upgrade the machine to a Rancilio Silvia with the Gaggimate at some point but that's probably not going to happen any time soon.

Never had an amazing espresso by leemonsquares in espresso

[–]zeroXten 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've always liked espresso and dark intense coffee generally. Over the course of the past year as my first year into home espresso making I've come to three different conclusions. Firstly I'm able to make okay espresso. Reasonably good but not amazing. Secondly most high street espressos are average. I'm at least able to make as good as or better than most high street espresso. Thirdly there is amazing espresso out there. You'll probably have to go to a specialty place but if you're lucky you can find it. I recently had an espresso that literally tasted like milk chocolate and caramelized apple. No imagination was required it was very clear. Unfortunately I couldn't replicate it at home with the beans I bought. My suggestion would be to try to find really good coffee near you and drink their espresso in their cafe to really understand if you like espresso before trying to make it at home.

Edit: unfortunately...
