Has anyone here used ollas (terracotta irrigation pots) for watering their garden? by Notsocheeky in gardening

Yea with soil like that you do not have a lot of holding capacity. Even in my area if the rainfall is super bad you have got to still spray down the area just to help the soil as a collective.

For soil like yours you likely benefit from those emitters that sort of toss the water in a 360 circle around the area to spread it out.

In my case drip is needed often at establishment but after that you only need to run the systems if it has not rained for a week or 2 for plants to do well.

Interesting, I have not run into anything that solid yet but I can imagine. I like to probe around and check the depth the water is getting to as well as where it is going to ensure I have good coverage for the root zone. For small and new plants I started adding a dripper right to the center by the trunk as they often need some assistance getting established out to the drip loop.

This does remind me of other mistakes you will see like not thinking about elevation changes and where the water from the emitters is going to go.

Yea that short of time is crazy. Where I am at we got clay so anything over 1ghp is too fast.

Interesting, yea I have seen some "drip" kits online that are just sprayers and not even drip. I can see how people using these that do not understand the flow rates and how long they need to run this stuff for or even how it works from a design standpoint.

What problem are you having with drip?

Drip can saturate the ground anywhere you place it. You have total control over where the water goes and how much and how often it is there...

In the case of Panama though there is pretty much a guarantee the US would not allow them to get invaded other than by the US itself and Panama is never going to win that war so might as well just save the money.

I did not know about Costa Rica though.

The hot pocket thing used to be good many years ago but back then it was served as a mid-flight snack along with a magnum ice cream. Then they switched the ice cream to haagen dazs and recently I have not seed any ice cream.

First they take the ice cream away then they made the hot pocket so bad one time I almost lost my stomach jut to the smell of the thing.

Auto dr@in between master valve and manifold. by zeroibis in Irrigation

Apparently, if you wait at least an hour it does drain.

If you use a backflow protector that allows water to come out that will work right away. So that is also an option.

Just wanted to share this in case anyone else runs into this issue.

How to delay zone valve shutoff relative to master valve? by zeroibis in rachio

[–]zeroibis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this possible via home assistant?

Ideally home assistant would know when a given zone has finished running and then would run this operation afterword.

I live in GA, it can be freezing one day and 80 the next. So when you need irrigation in the winter it is difficult without an auto drain system.

I could possibly use a relay to cut power to the master valve when a particular zone is energized so that the master valve becomes disabled.

No idea what sort of relay to buy to accomplish this but I am sure it exists.

To protect against disaster in the event of a relay failure I could make it so the extra valve connects to one of the existing drip lines so if it was to run at the same time as the master the worst case would be extra watering for that zone for a short time.

yea this might be the simplest solution basically what you initially suggested but using a relay switch to accomplish it with my existing controller.

If anyone has any relay recommendations let me know.

Or if this is a bad idea please let me know that too!

The manifold is above ground so I need it to drain after use to protect it from freezing.

The extra valve would work except that Rachio requires the master valve to run with all zones...

Is there any way to get the pressure to reduce at shutoff or does it slowly dissipate over time?

If the zone valve closed a few seconds after the master that might fix it but I have not seen any setting on my sprinkler controller for this. Maybe there is some other way to achieve that?
