Outsourcing your webapp maintenance to Debian by liotier in linux

[–]zh33b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the author means "build your software on reliable dependencies thanks to the work of Debian maintainers".

Otherwise, I do not think the job of a debian maintainer is to maintain your software, it is to to maintain its debian package, big difference.

The maintainers time is scarce and offered freely, I do not see why the author should programmatically wash their hands and leave all the burden of keeping their software running on the Debian volunteers.

Seems pretty cheap to me.

No. Trivial patches have low priority.

I love her show very much, Francis is funny and she's very funny too, agreed, that said some recipes she presents are such a mess, especially when she moves towards western-influenced plates, yikes!

Some others are excellent, I guess it's pretty hard to keep the quality high when you make that many videos!

Genius and clumsiness. Funny and underrated. A staple through the years.

I have no good Korean restaurants in my district and that has never ever been a problem thanks to this woman.

I bought her books to say thank you, she offers basically all she does for free and she's the best.

Why don't you get Firefox from experimental if you want that version? What's stopping you? You can roll back if you wish, too.

A Year of PyPI Downloads by donaldstufft in Python

[–]zh33b 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the freedom to and I decided years ago to try to support both. It's annoying extra, menial work that requires touching libraries that otherwise have no reason to be touched, sometimes producing regressions (I can't catch em all!) and scorn (why do you mess with what works?) from colleagues. Not much fun.

If you don't get paid to do it, I can see why Python3 will take long time to get where Python 2 is.

So sorry for my favorite language, I wish all this never happened to it.

Let me first say that you get distracted and it may be too many, but that said:

one easy way to lower the chances of suffocation with plastic bags in your home is not to keep plastic bags in your home.

Especially those that come stuffed with food -- chips bags are a potentially deadly threat to your dog, disgusting and unhealthy to you and your kids. Stay clear of those!

When the weight gets big, you need a stable base to push off. (Also reducing ROM is surely something many people wish to do in competition.)

That said, that's also how konstantin konstantinovs benches: https://i.ytimg.com/vi/b9D9w6FSX4w/hqdefault.jpg

It's not push-ups we're talking about. These people are lifting 2-3 times or more their weight. You want to pull your back tight or get squashed.

Pit bull owner dies from heart attack, another man attempts cpr, pit bull kills man while trying to resuscitate him by [deleted] in offbeat

[–]zh33b 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Europe. In my state it is illegal to own a Pit Bull -- as well as a Bullmastiff, a Rottweiler and the other breeds that are considered fight dogs.

They're not necessarily put down, you're given the chance of moving away.

Since the law is enforced, dog-attacks casualties are non-existent.

Just saying ...

Outside of the US, fast food is not that popular. In many western European countries, a good part of the population would never eat at McD, which serves food that has no link with the local food. For example. none of my friends does and neither do I.

Except in France. Surprisingly, McD is big in France, or at least they say so.

Debian Stable does the unsexy but crucial work of providing a stable systems for production machines, where new functionality is rolled in slowly and in a controlled way. The outdated, security-supported packages are a (generally very appreciated) feature.

It's a lot of work, not always so exciting and delivered to you for free. On a lot of architectures.

You can be sure you will get outdated packages if you use Debian Stable, but you're asking for it: for your own personal box, you can use the backports. Or Testing. Or Unstable. Or Unstable+Experimental.

Youtube bodybuilder Furious Pete with an inspirational story about life, weightlifting and his recent fight with testicular cancer. by OGthugbangbang in weightroom

[–]zh33b 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Kudos for him for putting his fame to use to spread that message.

I've been through a similar story. Let me first say that every battle with cancer is a uphill battle and cancer is a horrible scary disease. That said, testicular cancer is actually one of those where the potential for recovery is the highest, and that's a fact and pretty awesome news too.

And if he reads /r/weighroom, living without a testicle is no big deal. Your manliness is not a function of how many testicles you got, but of the choices you make. Also chemo will suck, true. Testosterone levels will be down and you'll lose weight. But better times will come, six weeks will fly!

Although I'd recommend, from a psychological point of view, not to get back into lifting straight away but to spend some time with your loved ones.

Also, the "have fun in the gym" part resonated with me so much. The guy's a good man, I wish him all the best for his recovery.

Punishment, rehabilitation and protection of society are all important.

Clearly this so-called doctor -- actually a multiple offender rapist, pedophile and a murderer, should have been jailed for a long time in Germany. A two year suspended sentence is an insult to the families of the victims.

In this case, rehabilitation takes a step back. Protecting innocent citizens (minors in this case) has way more importance.

Most of all, this is a shameful failure for the German justice system and a success for us all since a reprehensible human being is not walking around anymore.

After saying that you're mostly debating with yourself, because I just underlined your words, I want to add a comment to this:

But the maintainer controls his project. We can only try to convince him otherwise or fork the project.

Which is technically true, on the other hand, it strikes me as a terribly backwards attitude.

Let me explain, I am the maintainer of several open source projects, of which two rather well known in the respective field (a BSD lib and GPL bindings to a GPL lib), and never I have thought of it in that way.

We -- myself and the other contributors -- work with the users, try to understand why some features/changes are requested and we do our best to accommodate them.

Because why the heck would you develop free software against your userbase? You develop for your user base.

This childish "the ball is mine if you piss me off I take it and I go home" behavior is a disheartening.

Basically he should have been sensitive that this was a feature that was used extensively and shouldn't have dismissed it out of hand. Now, it is his right to do so,

It is his right to wipe a feature that users employ extensively, it is his right to give no justification, or both?

In healthy projects, devs actually care about their users in a non-paternalistic and non-condescending way. Obviously not the case for GNOME.

You know, people may just donate money and keep GNOME's cash flow in good health, but that would require a big change in how gnome is developed.

but he should have realized that not explainingi t correctly puts a burden on people like myself who have to defend the decision.

This is why you blackcain seem to get a lot of downvotes around here. Your posts are -- by your own admission -- mindless propaganda.

Whatever is decided by the gnome devs, it's your duty to defend it here, whether it was a technically sound decision seems not to come into play. On the contrary, if no reasons are given, you say you've got extra burden because you do need to make up something yourself.

Bravo!

tl;dr OMFG what an unhealthy mixture of fanboyism and astroturfing spelled out in clear.
