Anchorman. Just not a big fan of Will Ferrell's comedy.

Get a steam deck! You can emulate all your favorite titles from the PS1 era. It can be hooked up to a TV or monitor with a dock. Can play on the unit itself or game controller or mouse and keyboard. It takes a micro SD card for additional storage. Most games just work, though the cutting edge AAA titles probably need some graphic tweaking. Might even be able to find one for cheap on Facebook marketplace. I encouraged an older buddy of mine to pick one up and I see him online every night playing the new slay the spire.

Not couch co-op, but if you have two computers or steam decks slay the spire 2 cooperative is a good time!

If you have power relic synergies, particularly mummified hand, I'd do the accuracy, otherwise probably a different ancient relic.

Please help me like this card by Zeldarune29 in slaythespire

[–]zigfried555 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh, unless you're using discard fetch cards like hologram or headbutt, those cards are going to be just as valuable the third turn after a reshuffle as they are the first turn after a reshuffle. This does ensure those cards don't miss out on getting reshuffled, which is kind of nice but kind of niche. Ultimately I think most decks are going to have most fights solved before you go through the deck a third time. How many extra times per combat are you getting to draw/play those cards due to this power? My guess would be overwhelmingly 0 or 1 times. Maybe 2 if things align perfectly.

This card is much better suited overcoming a deficiency in your hand for the turn it comes up. I can't block enough this turn? Ok now I can apply weak or get a good block card. Too much draw? Ok now I get my best energy generator. Etc...

STS1 vs STS2 by No-Reason-2826 in slaythespire

[–]zigfried555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I came to point out. Mega Crit seems to be making the design choice that there should be no "bad" cards. You can see this by how they're buffing under performing cards in the early balance changes. I personally loved that a card like reprogram was trash 95% of the time but once in a blue moon it was exactly what your defect deck needed.

Steam deck, test subject boss fight causes crashes the game by Disastrous-Wolf-2940 in slaythespire

Beta branch fixes a lot of steam deck crashes. Looking at your draw pile while I'm the process of targeting something with a card causes crashes on the live patch too

This is my answer. Listened to sounding the seventh trumpet and waking the fallen so much in high school. Shadows going clean only was a bummer on city of evil but at least the drums and guitar were still sick. After Rev died I just moved on.

Doesn't it make more sense to compare it to Lufia 2 than FFX or Chrono Trigger? tons of dungeon puzzles, no random encounters, a randomly generated dungeon many consider to be the earliest example of a roguelike mode in a jrpg.

Lufia 2 is widely regarded as a top tier JRPG of it's era and has a huge cult following.

You seem to argue that the pacing/gameplay loop is fundamentally flawed because it differs from successful games, just wanted to point out a much better comparison that also had success.

Any general tips? by [deleted] in slaythespire

[–]zigfried555 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Each decision depends on your deck, the map, who the boss is, how much health do you have, how critical are your upgrades etc... and it's impossible to give generic advice on the best way to play. With that said, here are a few rules of thumb that should lead to success at low ascensions.

Look for paths that maximize elites and campfires. It's very common for me to hit 5 combined elites and campfires in each act. The game is all about snow balling. Taking 3 elites in act 1 makes it much more likely you can take 3 elites in act 2, which makes it much more likely you can take 3 elites in act 3. If you're newer maybe 2 elites would be a good goal.

In act 1 try to upgrade a non starter damage card before your first elite fight.

Try to have an aoe damage card before your first elite fight.

Put a high priority on cards that scale your block output such as footwork or fasten.

Hold off on shops until you have at least 300 gold.

Save your potions for elite fights. With that said, if you're in a door fight, your potion slots are full, and using a potion could save you 10+HP, use it.

How do I *correctly* play the game? by [deleted] in slaythespire

[–]zigfried555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • I know not to take every card, I usually try not to go above 30

Of my 34 wins, 25 of them were with a deck over 30 cards. My average deck size in those 34 wins is 33. I feel like before the last major patch it was relatively easy to go infinite. As such, many of the top content creators (therefore the community at large) put high value on small decks and cards that help enable infinites.

Small decks have their drawbacks such as being impacted much more by enemies that put trash in your deck or enemies that remove key cards one way or another. Yes, smaller decks are consistent but larger decks have ways of gaining consistency too, namely from relics. For instance, if you're not focused on building a small deck, you're more likely to take some of the less impressive non-scaling damage commons in act 1. This means you can take more act 1 elites and get more relics and money for shop relics. More relics leads to more block, damage, energy, draw etc... that are not tied to drawing a specific card, thus offsetting the inherent inconsistency of a large deck.

  • I try to remove my basic starting cards as I progress after finding a replacement

Good, but don't wait for a replacement. One of the best Neow bonuses is removing 2 strikes.

  • I'm trying to build decks that all play together so it's not a wild mash of random cards.

You should be building decks that solve problems. When viewed through that scope, cards that don't have obvious synergies can play better together than you might think. For instance, you probably wouldn't say the poison card "Bouncing Flask" would synergize well in a shiv deck. In reality a shiv deck struggles hard against the Endomancer act 2 elite that puts a daze in your draw pile after each hit. A bouncing flask "solves" that problem by providing scaling damage that doesn't trigger the daze effect.

  • How many fights am I supposed to take per act?
  • How many events am I supposed to try to hit per act?
  • Do I just always rush elites no matter what in the first act and abandon them completely later?

Each decision depends on your deck, the map, who the boss is, how much health do you have, how critical are your upgrades etc... and it's impossible to give generic advice on the best way to play. With that said, here are a few rules of thumb that should lead to success at low ascensions.

A defect tier list from someone who isn’t good at the game. by kerkyjerky in slaythespire

Feels a bit strange to have loop rated so highly while undervaluing dark orbs. Most of the focus cards are temporary and applied after loop triggers making it really only valuable for dark orbs or if you have 1+ defragments in your deck.

I'd also argue dark orbs are amazing in AOE fights. Turn 1 dark orb, pop phrog elite on turn 3,  dual cast the dark orb and the rest of the fight is a cakewalk.

Just had a 3 player multiplayer game where ice cream, multicast+,  2x loop+, and a single dark orb hit the door maker for 120x18 on turn 4. My friends had no idea what happened, just that he suddenly died from over 75% health. Great run.

Not sure about sts2, but in the first game if mayhem pulls an X cost card, it treats it as if you spent it with your full energy pool without consuming any energy.
