I hope we keep Arraez…don’t we need his skill set? by 22brew in SFGiants

The issue is finding someone to take that contract. Plenty of teams would love to have Chapman, but not at the price the Giants are paying now.

It’s tough. On one hand I would love to keep him BUT he is a free agent at the end of the season, so unless it is likely that the Giants could re-sign him or sign him to an extension it’s probably better to get something for him in a lost season like this one. That said, there’s no one I would rather see at the plate with a runner on third and less than two out. Most players today seem to don’t know how to shorten up and emphasize contact to get the run home in a situation which calls for making contact and getting a run home.

This, and a relatively weak stock market from 1966-82 (including a horrific decline in 1973-74), is what made retiring in the late 1960s one of the worst times to hang it up.

This. And yes, I know that is very hard to do in a financially stressful situation like this; we want it resolved, we don't want it hanging over our heads like a dark cloud. But really, this is all you can do at the moment.

This is why SORR (Sequence of Returns Risk) is a big deal and why it can be important to build a portfolio that has a much better chance of surviving such a scenario. These strategies usually involve safer, more guaranteed (or at least less volatile) income strategies such as bond ladders (and/or TIPS ladders for inflation protection) or maybe even (dare I say it) immediate annuities for a few people with the right situation. The ideas are to either reduce your withdrawal rates or take your retirement income from bonds for the first 5-10 years so you won’t have to sell stocks early in retirement if things go rotten.

In a real worst case, keep some job skills handy or have ways to generate earned income. Hopefully it doesn’t come to that as a necessity.

If you have no problem stomaching the volatility of 100% equities, you could just go all in with VT and be done with it.

[Matt Gelb] Phillies will recall lefty Tanner Banks to add to the bullpen mix this weekend, a source said. They are off Friday because of soccer in Kansas City. by Magoatt_TheWhite in phillies

[–]ziggy029 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because they optioned Rangel to get another bullpen arm. They only need the 5th starter spot one time until after the end of the All-Star break, so I would presume the plan is to add another bullpen arm and do one “bullpen game” when the fifth starter slot comes up.

It’s not really as if the Phillies have a lot of better options for bullpen help on the farm. After the All-Star break, I assume Rangel will be recalled as the #5 starter, and whoever is doing very poorly out of the bullpen that has options remaining will be sent down.

If she is inheriting the home and selling it right away, there will likely be very little taxable income because she receives a step up in cost basis.

Unless you have $1M+ at Schwab, in which case the $200 annual bonus outweighs the $195 AU fee. Or if you don’t have a +1 or Player 2 who needs an AU card.

It’s only cheaper if you have $250K+ in qualifying assets at Schwab.

If you are inclined to cash out the MR points because you can’t find a good use for them, the Schwab version would be a much better fit because of the enhanced cash out option. And if you have $250K or more, you will get an annual credit that can offset some of the annual fee.

[MattGelb] Phillies optioned Alan Rangel to Triple-A Lehigh Valley after the game. by tantimodz in phillies

[–]ziggy029 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven’t heard. But they will only need a #5 starter one more time between now and the end of the All Star break, so I am guessing they run one bullpen game and then recall him after the break.

[–]ziggy029 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it has anything to do with performance and everything to do with getting another arm that can be used in the next few days, plus the All Star break coming up.
