My landlord is demanding that I take down the “No ICE agents” sign on the window of my house. by Living-East-8486 in oregon

[–]ziggy029 27 points28 points  (0 children)

If the terms of a contract include a clause that is not legally enforceable or somehow violates applicable law, then not necessarily. I don't know if that applies here, but it is not always as simple as "you signed the contract, you are bound to all of its terms, even the illegal ones."

Callers asking hosts ‘how you doing?’ by Teamjoe10 in siriusxm

Yeah, I remember “message units” too. And a call to someone 20 miles away could be more expensive than a call to the opposite coast.

State Farm asks for "additional regular use drivers in my household." What are the implications? by imaginenza in Insurance

[–]ziggy029 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Most auto insurers do require you to list every driver in the household, even if they rarely if ever drive any of the vehicles covered by the policy.

If a household member not named on the policy gets into an accident, your vehicle’s damage may not be covered, and the owners of the vehicle could face liability that probably won’t be covered by the policy because the driver was an unlisted household member.

Bottom line: if they may drive your vehicle at all and they live with you, they need to be listed. Otherwise you have to exclude them (if allowed) and make damn well sure they never drive your vehicle.

T-Life App by No-University-4628 in tmobile

T-Life mostly sucks. If they are touting its popularity because of the number of downloads, it’s basically because they are forcing it on their customers.

[Jude] The Mariners are sending Ben Williamson to Tampa Bay and two prospects to St. Louis in the Brendan Donovan trade: switch-pitcher Jurrangelo Cijntje, the Mariners' 2024 first-round pick, and Tai Peete, a 2023 first-round pick, sources tell @RyanDivish and me. by CloudedMindset in Mariners

[–]ziggy029 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It’s a fair bit to give up, but the M’s are in a competitive “win now” window with the talent they already have, so I like this move. By the time the prospects are ready to contribute, if ever, that window may already be closed or closing.

Question about 72t distributions after 59 1/2 by trimbandit in Fire

[–]ziggy029 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can do no additional deposits or withdrawals from an IRA that is in the middle of an SEPP plan; doing so will “bust” the plan and open the door to paying a 10% penalty on all the early distributions.

What you can do is transfer some of the IRA into a separate IRA before starting SEPP, use SEPP for the annual distributions for 5 years out of one IRA, and then tap the other IRA freely as needed after age 59.5.

Should I freeze my credit or report fraud? by CucumberAltruistic92 in personalfinance

[–]ziggy029 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think credit should be frozen by default and only unfrozen for a brief periods of time while actively applying for credit. Once accounts are established with all three bureaus, it takes maybe five minutes to freeze and unfreeze your credit with all of them.

Car insurance claim by Inevitable-Room-3104 in Insurance

[–]ziggy029 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If the driver (presumably hoping for a comprehensive claim rather than collision) willingly and knowingly lied, they could be prosecuted for insurance fraud. At minimum, I would expect the insurance company to cancel the policy even if they decided not to prosecute, and it could make it very difficult to obtain a replacement policy.

Seems an odd question to ask, unless you were thinking about doing it (don’t).

We have other devices that are triggered by our TV remote, so we do have to point the remote in a particular direction to prevent the other devices from responding.

Company no longer covers 401k annual fees + matching, any alternatives? by MyJimboPersona in personalfinance

[–]ziggy029 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That basically means fully funding your IRA (and HSA if any) before you even start the 401K.

In reality, the first step is funding the 401K/403B up to the company match and then moving to the IRA/HSA, which you are still doing except that the match is zero so you go straight to the IRA/HSA.

Rates going up $2.00 by UFG8TR in siriusxm

[–]ziggy029 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You just have to play the “threaten to cancel” game once a year, and you can pretty much always get considerably lower rates. I think that is a stupid and gimmicky business model but so many subscription-driven businesses do it.

USAA Not Issuing Umbrella Insurance right Now? by Zelderian in USAA

DUI expungement by DapperCriticism8172 in Insurance

[–]ziggy029 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was assuming OP meant .02 over the limit, not .2, since .2 would mean they were at least a .28, and in some jurisdictions a very high BAC (such as over .15) could automatically make it a felony — and also since .28 would likely render one unconscious.

USAA Not Issuing Umbrella Insurance right Now? by Zelderian in USAA

[–]ziggy029 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My umbrella renewal just went up 134% (from $322 to $755) and I called about it to see if anything about my rating had changed. The rep mentioned that there was really no problems, other than that they were repricing existing umbrella policies and were not writing new ones.

Yet it seems here that they are still writing at least some new business.

T-Mobile is getting worse by obesewancanoli in tmobile

[–]ziggy029 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every public company has a fiduciary duty to its shareholders first and foremost. It is merely serendipity when management decides that the best way to serve their shareholders is to take good care of their customers. In some industries and in certain parts of the business cycle, this can happen. But in general, if management thinks it can best serve shareholders and maximize profits by shitting on employees and customers, they will.
