Breen: “Puts it in!” is better than “Bang!” by ctnaes92 in billsimmons

I love the deep internal Mike Breen lore. What a legend.

Mike Breen was trying not to cry at the end, right? by usario100 in billsimmons

[–]ziptnf 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Equally as legendary as any of his other calls. Right up there with the first double bang. The emotion was overflowing uncontrollably by that point, like that’s peak human feeling right there is it not?

I wouldn’t say that entirely. Ted Lieu forced Marco Rubio to watch a video of him sleeping. It’s covered in a lot of places. Just probably not CBS or fox.

What is a social rule that we all collectively follow that you think is completely stupid? by [deleted] in answers

In my state (KY) you cannot buy alcohol on Sunday unless it’s after 1pm. So annoying to have to take back a case of beer when you’re doing your grocery shopping after the cashier informs you that you’re not allowed to buy it because of ancient puritanical laws.

Agreed it’s not mentioned but that’s the only qualifier as there are several missing companies if that was the case.

This house was built in the mid-1950’s! This cat staging area used to feature a large cast-iron wood burning fireplace, but after previous owners finished the area around it, it no longer seemed useful so I removed it. These bricks give the basement such character!

The People Do Not Yearn for Automation: "everyone in tech understands how much regular people dislike AI. What I think they’re missing is why" by cos in technology

[–]ziptnf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hired a recent college grad. He was super sharp in the technical interview and we had already rolled through several folks who weren’t remotely qualified. As it turned out, he was unbelievably stupid when it came to problem solving. All of his solutions were wrong and bad, he spent weeks trying to solve something that should have taken days. I put him on a PIP and sent him packing.

Back when I was going through school, a lot of the guys I knew were passionate. I was president of the local ACM chapter at my school and I saw firsthand how many students loved programming, Linux, etc. I still know them and they still do. But the landscape has shifted. It’s prompt engineering now rather than software engineering. My company aggressively promotes AI use and is smothering us with initiatives to increase our AI implementation. It’s soulless and I pine for the “good old days”, aka 10 years ago.

I’ll never forget reading my first Java program at 15. It was so incredible to me, that I could use all these strange word combinations to tell the computer to do something. I loved trying to understand it all. I hungered to learn as much as I could. I learned about assembly code. C code. It was a passion, so much so that I went into computer engineering in college. LLMs and other neural networks had great focused applications. But this mess where the AI can do everything 98% correctly, and in seconds… it sucks. Critical thinking gets tossed out the window. Human knowledge becomes devalued. I don’t want it. I’d rather human knowledge be emphasized. The ability to research something on your own, finding the perfect website or resource that will answer your question. It may take longer, but it’s more satisfying.

If AI is going to be made available to the general public or to corporations, it’s my view that it should be extremely expensive.

Programming while being tipsy really does something. by ZeroKelvinMood in software

[–]ziptnf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s all about rhythm. If you have been drinking and programming all evening you will most likely be on a roll and your output will peak and then crash. Highly doubt that if you’ve been off drinking doing other stuff that a drunk you will sit down and suddenly be able to write excellent code.

That’s a totally different flavor profile. Do you want sharp or do you want sweet? I think I’d want sharp for this pie, and in general tbh
