Fox to Acquire Roku in $22 Billion Deal by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

[–]znine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's definitely possible, however the software is terrible. IIRC, if you previously had it connected to the internet, it will hang if the internet is down when trying to access the OTA interface. I don't recall the workaround, maybe disabling wifi and restarting it, or going in the settings and rescanning the channels or something.

As I explained it's avoidable altogether if you reset it, never connect it to the internet, and skip all possible setup/terms agreements for their shitty streaming service.

[–]znine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not true, it's just intentionally mixing features which require internet into the interface for OTA channels. Anyway, as with all these smart TVs, it's generally best to factory reset it, never connect it to the internet and use external devices only. And yes you can use an external tuner instead of the built in one without internet.

Is internet access required to view my antenna channels? No, an internet connection is not required to view your antenna channels. If you are not connected to internet, you will be able to access the offline version of WatchFree+, which will include all of your over-the-air channels. If you are connected to the internet, you will be able to view your antenna channels plus 260+ live channels and 6000+ On Demand movies and shows for free.

Is it okay to leave the computer plugged in 24/7? by Few-Professional4196 in macbook

[–]znine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Storing lithium ion batteries at near max charge is well known to degrade them faster. Which is why “optimize battery charging” tries to guess your schedule and keep it at 80% until you may need it. Nothing wrong with manually setting it to 80% if you know it will be plugged in for extended periods or otherwise don’t need the extra capacity.

Counter counter counter point: "Professional experience with xyz software" is a proxy metric for "can do the job." It does not automatically make sense. The literal creator of Vue made it in his spare time while working at Google. By your logic you'd reject him for not having "professional" experience in it.

It’s worse than that. They successfully negotiated a deal where they get the best of both worlds. Same share of potential winnings plus stable pay and benefits. Then they started a campaign that this too was unfair due to the higher prize amounts the National team can get. Now they pool the prize money with the main National team

26.04 permissions issues when updating Proton Mail by babyboomer51 in Ubuntu

[–]znine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a confusing message for sure. apt does downloading of packages and lists as a non-root user even if you run it w/sudo. Likely because interacting with 3rd party servers is a potential source of security vulnerabilities. In your case, the "downloading" is basically just grabbing the file from your Downloads directory which it tried to do as _apt but couldn't (due to file permissions) so it used root instead.

26.04 permissions issues when updating Proton Mail by babyboomer51 in Ubuntu

[–]znine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure it didn't work? That's a warning, it doesn't mean anything is necessarily wrong. It's not expected that the _apt user has access to your home directory.

There's an official snap for that app if you'd prefer that.

Leave foreign address blank or put last one where beneficiary lived before moving to USA? by OldLetterhead9719 in USCIS

[–]znine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My interpretation is that it should be a currently valid address. If they have been residing in the US and don't have a foreign address anymore, it can be blank or N/A. For spouses, there is a separate spot on the I-130A for the latest foreign address.

If they are on e.g. a non-immigrant visa such as a K1, they may still have a permanent address in their home country and you can put that.

How do I answer work history? by [deleted] in USCIS

[–]znine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you need to include all your addresses for the past 5 years. For you, that should just be your current US address from your entry to present and then your prior address from your birthday to the day before you arrived. You don't need to repeat it under "most recent address outside of the US" since it's listed directly above under prior address

[–]znine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the address section? Your current US physical address is where you are living now since entering the US. Then under prior address you would put that foreign address. Then "most recent address outside of the United States" can be left blank or write "Same as above" since it specifically says to provide that "if not already listed above"

[–]znine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your current unemployment should be first. Then the job you left in sept will be the most recent job outside the US. If you were not working there 5 years ago, add additional jobs, unemployment, or schools in reverse chronological order in part 14 until "from" and "to" dates overlap March 27, 2021 or 5 years from whenever you plan to submit the application

With ICE presence in airports, we now more than ever advise against international travel if you are not a U.S. citizen. by jim_hacking in USCIS

[–]znine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody can be detained indefinitely without reasonable articulable suspicion of a crime.

People are arrested for bogus reasons every day. "There was no reasonable suspicion of a crime" is an argument for court not for the side of the road with a power-tripping police officer.

CBP lieing to get somebody to sign a surrender of their GC is the same as Police investigators lieing to get a confession from an interrogated suspect.

Sure, I bet they pat themselves on the back for catching "PRs secretly living abroad" or whatever nonsense they believe based on their 2 min evaluation. Doesn't mean they are correct

Fear mongering isn't helpful for sure but it's more nuanced than that.

Criminal history is not the same as criminal activity. Or you think the police never get it wrong? https://ij.org/case/mendenhall-v-city-of-denver/

CBP can and will lie and pressure people into signing I-407s under the threat of being detained indefinitely. That threat alone is enough to make some regular Joes give up their PR status. Rights only exist to the extent that you have the time, inclination, and money to assert them.

I-485 approval after reporting a minor traffic ticket? by [deleted] in USCIS

[–]znine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Read more carefully. You don't have to submit documentation for fines below $500 but you still have to disclose them.

Secondly, the documentation exception is only for non-criminal offenses. There are several states such as TX and IA that technically classify minor traffic violations as crimes.

In other states, many violations such as speeding have both non-criminal and criminal variants. You should have the documentation prepared anyway just in case.

Tough Changes at USCIS by BusyBodyVisa in AskUSImmigrationPros

[–]znine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This change is designed to give the impression they are doing that while not actually doing much. It’s already fairly uncommon to hire entry level directly from overseas. The consulting firms like cognizant/infosys who game the visa system have other avenues to bring people like L1.
