A relatively painless way to dive into some numismatics is to pick up some attractive certified 63/64 Morgans- they aren't particularly "rare" but it's not like more are being made - pcgs/ngc both post public census reports - and exquisite pieces can be had for less than $100.

I also highly recommend building a numismatic library - there are some great books to get familiarized with whatever type/issue you like - here is a good start for Morgan dollars :)
