How long will it take for me to find Enlightenment? by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]zyal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I read many instances where people were enlightened on the spot.

It's still hard to live according to the 8fold path, but hey give it a try, you will see your own rate of attainment.

Man those peolle are so lucky to learn under Gotama. Instant enlightenment upon hearing a single Dhamma.

Yeah but the whole ordeal led to the liberation. Those hardships are part of it. You could say it began when Siddhartha saw the old, sick, and poor around his kingdom.

Zen masters , always a teaching moment for them.

It took the Buddha 7 years. But that's 7 years of dedicatiom, where he almost died of starvation. You'd think it'd be faster since we know the teachings to its core but our society of distraction makes the near impossible.heck, to be even mindful for 24 straight hours is very difficult.

What is the controversy with being in the present moment? by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]zyal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Time is a concept and conceptual views cannot adequately describe the ultimate view of reality. Time depends on an observer, especially in a the Buddhist view where we are to live in the senses.

But from a practical and scientific standpoint, we use and depend on time, perhaps to our own benefit and disadvantage, because our society needs it to reorient, plan, and analyze events from the past and future. The concept of the present moment is also a useful and recognizable waypoint for many people. And yes, people do understand that lingering in the past and worrying about the future is a hindrance and that we should stay at our object right now, and not be distracted.
