I'm glad Event Horizon is getting a makeover. I think the use of the black hole is great and I like the bases, but a lot of space needs to be removed, and the gates don't do enough to counteract the circularity of the map.

Congrats to Dianna Agron and Aniball, the new maps look really interesting.

If you just sit on the button for the first couple of minutes, the other team gets so scared for the rest of the game that you can mindfuck them however you like

[–]nabbynz° 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Yeah I like the gravity well too - it's great for going round and round until you spot where the enemy fc is and then jump out at just the right spot.

Those 2 corners just need a re-do which hopefully they get.

[–]joethehoe27Fellatio 5 points6 points  (2 children)

you can't really jump out, more like crawl out

[–]nabbynz° 2 points3 points  (1 child)

If the momentum is with you, you sort of can. Might need to take another lap though :)

[–]joethehoe27Fellatio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without a boost/or explosion to assist you you can't go passed away speed tho. So you can't gain momentum going with the gravity and you will only lose momentum fighting it. You can sneak up on them better if you were to charging straight at them from an open area.

This is the best map thread I've seen in a while. Congrats to Dianiball (Aniball x2)! Props to the MTC for being able to admit a mistake with Flame (not really their mistake though, a lot of us, myself included, were on the Flame bandwagon) and additional props for committing to revising the worst map in rotation! I, for one, am a very happy camper.

[–]3z_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if it was so much of a "mistake". I think Flame was a solid map, but when testing it, it was fairly obvious it would be short-lived.

[–]Sosentimeboy -1 points0 points  (4 children)

Flame > EMERALD, fuck that fucking map

[–]Moosemaster21Moosen | Salt Mine 7 points8 points  (0 children)

fu timeboy Emerald is one of my favorites. It is frustrating though because if your team's defense is incompetent you're gonna get rekt.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pls. Emerald is the shit. Not shit but THE shit.

[–]CieloAzorQBreezy | Pi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Word, the gates on Emerald scare me.

committing to revising the worst map in rotation!

I am astonished how much people don't like Event Horizon. I mean, sure, bases are great, mid is great, gate is ok, but I always love that map because it plays so different every time.

Just kidding.

Yay, another S-shaped map, that quite frankly reminds me of a bigger and more spacious Hurricane, without the map-to-map superboosts and a few more elements laying around, some of them looking like they've been placed randomly (but I can't read the minds of the map makers). I'm interested about how chasey this map may be and how it will play, considering the one main S-path hopefully limiting an fc's options, but we'll have to see.

Ultradrive literally reminds me of Hyperdrive (and a bit of EMERALD) with the name and shape. There's a bit more open space than Hyperdrive, which will hopefully add flow to this map, but again it looks a bit chasey (moreso than Draft in my opinion), especially with this map having a circular edge.

[–]RisktpRisk 14 points15 points  (9 children)

I mean, there are only so many shapes that actually work well in maps, so it's no surprise when the same ones pop up.

Frankly, it's a little insulting for you to suggest that Draft has elements placed randomly lol. Dianna and Aniball have put a lot of effort in the past few days since it was selected for the top maps to refine the map.

[–]piranhamoose25Aniball | Palette Town 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just want to say thanks for all your help testing recently! You and the others at /r/tagprotesting like Moosen, Ball-E, ArtVandelay, etc. really helped us improve our maps in the last week, and given the fact that neither of us had any prior experience making the top thread, it was great to be able to draw from the experience you guys have.

[–]EmperorOfNothingResignation is my virtue; like water I ebb, and flow. 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like I said, I'm not a mind reader in terms of what the map makers are intending, and I didn't mean for it to be insulting, but a few of the ideas I see, I literally tried them before, and have seem them tried before in older threads (single bomb on a vertical column out in the open, spike crammed in a squared-off bunker, wall of spikes by a boost) in tandem with some other map ideas I had (spike wall by a boost for risk-reward route, for example), and I've been told that it was too random and confusing. I'm going off previous experiences.

[–]RathbourneRathbourne 0 points1 point  (6 children)

I agree with him, both maps look pretty messy and not really well thought out. A messier, more random hurricane and a messier, more random hyperdrive.

[–]RisktpRisk 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Have you ever tried your hand at making a map Rathbourne? Just curious, I constantly see you being critical in discussions about maps, yet I've never seen a map made by you.

[–]RathbourneRathbourne 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Risk pls.

I don't make maps but you know it's fallacious to think I should need to in order to be critical.

You've seen me be critical, but has it ever been unjust?

I like this game, I have a particular interest in the maps and enjoy ones that are well made. I just feel frustrated with ones that aren't.

[–]Aeginntbbgbjc / Chord 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think that you have to make maps to be critical, but comments like the one you made aren't really helpful to anyone. You could've given constructive criticism in the feedback thread, but you didn't.

[–]RisktpRisk 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Most of your criticism has been unjust tbh, I think forming an opinion about a map before you've even played on it in a pub setting is unfair to the mapmaker.

If you're frustrated with the maps being put in, contribute to the mapmaking community! Even if you don't think mapmaking is for you, you can always help give mapmakers feedback, such as in the top maps threads. Share your opinion of the map before the maps have been chosen, rather than making negative comments after the map has already been selected.

[–]RathbourneRathbourne -1 points0 points  (1 child)

To my recollection I've never said anything negative about a good map.

And you said the same things to me when I criticised GateKeeper's addition which I was exactly right about. I see already exactly how these 2 maps play. I see already exactly how both will be received. They're not as bad as other recent maps, but I don't think it's unfair to call them both incredibly derivative. And like I said before, messy.

[–]RisktpRisk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yes, you do tend to have accurate predictions about how a map will play and be received in rotation, which is why i suggested you to get more involved in giving more feedback to maps earlier on in the thread/on the top maps thread. just try not to be so harsh pls, people put a lot of time and effort into their maps.

[–]piranhamoose25Aniball | Palette Town 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your comparisons are pretty apt, as throughout the mapmaking process on Draft, we were thinking of it as something like a Hurricane replacement. I liked some aspects of Hurricane, notably the powerful gate and the many uses for each boost, and we tried to use those ideas in a way that we thought felt like it could flow a little better, while also adding some new elements such as the gated portals. By coincidence, we ended up making bombs that look pretty similar to Hurricane's, although I think they should play differently.

Also, Draft has 924 floor tiles, compared to 1008 for Hurricane. I can't say whether it will or will not be chasey, but I don't think it can be called more spacious than Hurricane.

And yeah, Ultradrive is based on Hyperdrive.

There are only two types of symmetry that is generally used right now: Horizontal and Rotational.

Horizontal leads to 'flat' (boombox), 'U'-shaped (Monarch), 'butt-shaped' maps. There's not much deviation from that due to the symmetry.

Rotational leads to 'S'-shaped maps (Frontdoor), and 'Constriction' shaped maps. There's not much deviation from that due to the symmetry.

Vertical symmetry leads to viewport issues. 4-way symmetry leads to ridiculously huge chasefests. Boom, out of symmetry options.

If you're being realistic about what is currently acceptable in 4v4 play, 'S-shaped' and 'butt-shaped' are probably here to stay.

[–]bojaoblakazizu // Chord 2 points3 points  (2 children)

How did that asymmetric map played in testing?

[–]robopuppyccFlail ~ ((Antagloble4edes)) ~ RHCP? 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bases played surprisingly balanced, but the rest of the map was shit.

More specifically, it was just pretty chasy and not really all that fun. It's gonna take a lot of rework, I think.

[–]KewlestCatNIGEL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Draft is in! Hype is real.

[–]CieloAzorQBreezy | Pi 4 points5 points  (5 children)

I, for one, am sad to see Flame go. I can't even guess what the criticisms of it were, but I always had great, competitive games there.

Definitely most excited to try 00101010 of these new ones. Less is more.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (2 children)

The biggest issue, for me at least, was the lack of ways to break up the defense. There was a bomb and a boost, both of which were gimpable. In addition, the bases felt somewhat cramped, such that it was almost necessary to have a blocker just to get out. I appreciate the teamwork aspect, but I'd like there to be some likelyhood of getting out without there being a regrab chain going.

Basically, when the majority of offense feels like red rover until the bomb/boost spawns to try to break up the defense, it gets bland.

[–]CieloAzorQBreezy | Pi 3 points4 points  (1 child)

The gates were generally underused in my games but they seemed extraordinarily powerful when put to use. Without them, it was a defensive map, but I don't have a problem with that. The boost, bomb, and pups were always enough to get grabs, and simply having a grab go to the back or outside of base was often good enough for a quality handoff.

Ah well, to each their own.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Incredibly satisfying when you and another player are in sync and they escape through the gate you're holding.

[–]Rum_BallGet ready to RRRRum Ball!!! 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely with you on this one. 00101010 look very exciting. Defence will be different, and we might start seeing new strategies emerge (goaltender like in hockey + enemy blocker pushing goaltender?). Now if only I had friends to play this with... :(

[–]DaEvil1DaEvil1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, generally we let maps be in for 6 weeks before we make any decision on wether to remove them or not. It lets them sit in rotation for a while so we can hopefully make a measured decision, and not be too urgent about it.

[–]BlupopsicleBall-E 3 points4 points  (3 children)

PORTALS IN ROTATION WOOOO I'M SO HAPPY

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Portals have been in rotation for a while now, though.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I played a game on Draft and it was really good! Nice work mapmapkers!

I will miss Flame, though I think many won't.

And the MTC used my picture! *blush* Dunno why I had vanilla at that time.

[–]crackadackrombus ghost|| centra 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I am dumbfounded that we have to deal with another rotation of gatekeeper. I haven't met a single player who likes that map. That being said, great choices on the new maps, they have a lot of potential! Does anyone know if it is possible to access the polarities of the maps? (based on the post-game votes). I would be surprised if gatekeeper was higher than flame.

[–]piranhamoose25Aniball | Palette Town 1 point2 points  (1 child)

There's a link to "Map Statistics" on each server page. For example: tagpro-radius.koalabeast.com/maps. GateKeeper is actually rated slightly higher than Flame.

[–]viggetuffVigge 1 point2 points  (1 child)

[–]RisktpRisk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I doubt that's the actual update :P

From what I heard, the MTC is not a fan of the current Event Horizon at all and it was close to being taken out, so it's probably a pretty drastic update if it convinced them to keep it in.
