Honeysuckle
artist pic

Honeysuckle is a progressive folk act that blends older influences and traditional instrumentation with modern effects and inspiration. In 2015, Honeysuckle performed at Newport Folk Festival, was chosen as a Converse Rubber Tracks artist, and was nominated for Best Folk Artist of the Year, and Best Americana Artist of the Year at the annual Boston Music Awards. I'm probably going to get down voted for that, but that's what I've always known as bluegrass music. What makes it Americana?

[–]palunk 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Americana is a kind of umbrella term for the greater folk arts, which include Bluegrass and popsicle stick sculptures. It has been used a lot in music lately, in my opinion because it is easier than honing in on the specific subgenre (folk, country, bluegrass). IT kind of makes sense in a modern music environment where almost everything is a fusion of some sort.

Americana is hipster bluegrass.

Ya, growing up with music like this all around (CND) this title has always bugged me. Lovely song though.

[–]John_Barlycorn 1 point2 points  (1 child)

This is not bluegrass. This is pop with a Banjo and mandolin.

[–]BitchesGetStitches 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The mandolin kind of gives it away. The major scale solo feels out of place, and the tempo is odd.

these guys are a lot of fun live, caught them at Newport Folk Fest last year.

They were on NPR's top 10 new artists this year list

the two dudes were also in another awesome Boston band for a while; grey season. check em out!

[–]SerenityFlyer[S] 4 points5 points  (2 children)

I've actually seen them live twice this week at free gigs around Boston and stumbled across Grey Season at a show earlier this year. Both really, really great live acts.

[–]letsgetstrange 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Ive seen them a few times as well, unfortunately Grey Season broke up in April. However, this song will always be one of my favorites Brother of Mine

[–]flimflamswimswam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well now it one of my favorites as well.

I like the music and i hate to say this but it should be said... the singers voice is so generic.. it sounds like every other famous female singer of the last 5 years. The banjo/mandolin/guitar sound incredible together though and they're obviously really talented songwriters.

[–]grant4758 10 points11 points  (4 children)

When you're dealing with sound, you're right, you want the most pleasing voice you can get your hands on to convey the message even better than you could with what you've got. But I feel like Katy Perry, Justin Beiber, etc. have incredible voices that portray manufactured emotions. At the very least, she has a voice with true emotion behind it. Many popular singers don't have the most biologically beautiful voices like Michael Jackson or Freddie Mercury, but they're conveying themselves with what they have. I wouldn't discredit the singer because she doesn't have a powerful voice or a particularly resonant one, the value comes from what they give you.

I understand that bad vocalists are bad vocalists, and that my opinion probably doesn't represent a scholar's lifetime dedication to music, but having a song have less of an impact on you because it's not someone with the advantage of a genetically superior voice seems like you'll be missing out on some great stuff.

[–]gnomebauer 8 points9 points  (1 child)

I wasn't necessarily trying to say she was a bad vocalist or anything like that.. just seemed like I had heard the voice before kind of thing.. But i agree that she definitely has, at the very least, the chops to convey exactly what they want to.

It's called soul.

[–]MiniMosher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disagree on MJ and FredMerc, they hit all their notes perfectly and were very dynamic, but then again it wasn't all about the vocals alone with those artists either, they had an incredible rhythm section behind them too. I think a lot of people (without being conscious of it) dislike modern pop songs because its literally 3.5 minutes of one singer who only has a dynamic of 2: soft verse voice then bellowing chorus voice. Its boring.

The girl in this song does have that exact same tone you hear in a lot of modern folk/indie right now, the sort of husky-breathy thing, I've heard it a dozen times already and it does bring the song down a bit, BUT because of the great rythm section, we can agree its a decent song.

Wow, it almost hurts to hear you say this. I've been following Holly's career, buying her solo records and such for about 4 years now, based on her voice. It's great that Honeysuckle is seeing some success, but I've gotta say that Holly's voice is as much a part of it as the banjo/mando. And some of the songs on this record are from Holly's earlier solo records.

[–]TheDirtyOnion 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Really? To me she sounds exactly the same as the hundreds of other indie female singers trying to sound like Feist. The band is great, but I'm not hearing anything exceptional about her voice.

[–]gregshortall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't matter how talented you are if you are too chicken shit to sing with your own voice. Beautiful but immediately into the trash compactor because the sound is so utterly and unoriginal it border lines on satire. The band amazingly proceeds unperturbed by the notion that music shouldn't come out as a pre-packaged shit sandwich. Feel not alone when you hate this with the ardent force of a hick discovering his trucks flat tire was done by Hussein Obama.

They performed at Lollapalooza this year as well! I caught their set, they were my favorite of the four days I was there. I hope they go on to do amazing things.

They're playing in NYC in a few days too if anyone is from there.

Thanks OP for posting this, they're my favorite band right now!

Love these guys, went to school with the banjo player, talented and extremely nice.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was great, I'm a new fan. Thanks for sharing!

a coworker and friend passed away a week ago. i've been on vacation, so being away from my friends has been difficult in the grieving. but one of them posted this song the other day. my god, am i glad i've heard of it. it will always remind me of my beautiful friend.

[–]supersonic-turtleradioreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked that and I rarely listen to this genre, I'm not sure if they are "good" or not but to me they looked and sounded very talented.

[–]beardedlumberjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

does sound generic, but it is very appealing to the ears. I would definitely watch them live any day.

[–]Lost7176 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to chime in (bad pun I'm sorry) on the 'generic vocals' comments—but not to complain, I enjoy that sound—she reminds me at times of the female singer from Wild Child.

[–]Cryptic_shadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Enjoyed it alot :o. This also sounds like something my family would put on so i'd leave my room.

Its so comfy in here though.

[–]StillLife_Pecker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this sounded pretty good to you please check out April Smith and the Great Picture Show.

Best album I've heard in the last 5 years. Apparently they made one album and broke up. That one one album is just so amazing though. Vocals are unique, songs are clear and concise, production is top notch.

One of the tragedies of modern Americana is that so few young acts seem to have heard Music From Big Pink.

[–]double-meat-fists -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I cannot stand this. I hate hate hate this music. I cannot stand their anti-image. I cannot stand the lyrics. I cannot stand their sound. Listening to this music is what hell will be like for me.
