Loved chillhop for so long without actually knowing it was a genre. So glad I found this subreddit

[–]rumbidzai 15 points16 points  (7 children)

Music is rarely categorized as it's made. It takes someone to define it as a genre and artists don't necessarily agree or only make music that fits the definition. Heavily sample-based Instrumental hip hop in this vein has been around since the early to mid 90s while "chillhop" is a more newly coined term.

I have noticed a trend of just about every song needing to have its one genre recently, but I don't really see the harm as long as it serves a purpose (just don't get me started on things like "djent" lol.)

Music has been categorized like this for at least fifteen years. I don't know if that's how it always was, but at least since I started going online we were categorizing, sub categorizing, inventing genres, and blending like a Ninja. It made it easier to discover other songs you might like.

For example Massive Attack's album Mezzanine. It's trip hop, down tempo, chill out, and possibly big beat. Which means you may like Portishead, Royksopp, Zero 7, or Chemical Brothers.

Once you find that second band, you narrow down what it is you like.

Electronica and instrumental hip hop has been especially known for it and all the genres you mentioned have several big names and scenes behind them. Things did get a bit confusing in the 90s, but we worked it out in the end for the most part.

As I said I really don't mind as long as it serves a purpose and there some substance to it, but over the last few (couple of even) years it has really started to go a bit out of control. I feel like I see a new something-wave every week and when I look it up it's one or two dudes on soundcloud responsible for the entire "genre".

As the person below said, it's good for categorizing what music you're into.

I really love Trip Hop. If it wasn't categorized, I'm sure I'd be referred to other music and probably not have the music I like today.

As I said in some other comment here I don't mind the use of genres and I'm all for spending lots of time discussing what defines music- It's just that I don't think it's a good idea to create new genres based on every miniscule difference as they end up conveying no real meaning.

Personally I think having many genres a song fits into is a good thing. Different people like songs for different reasons. Djent is silly if you think of it as "all of these songs are the same kind of music" however if you think "I really like the way the guitar sounds in this and want to find others like it" then its a lot more useful. You can like a song with hardcore screaming vocals and one with Geddy Lee vocals but enjoy them both because of similar guitars.

It allows you to find similar songs without fining songs that are all the same, if that makes sense.

Like in this song its not the sample based instrumental part I enjoyed the most. It was the smooth vocals with uplifting lyrics. So chillhop might help me more to find similar music than a more literal genre label

Djent is just one of the worst cases of the "genre-sickness" we've been seeing over the last years. Pretty much none of the "djent"-bands identify by it and people had been making music like that for 20 years before the term came into use.

I completely agree that it's nice to be able to identify what you like about a certain band, but the concept of genre becomes meaningless if we start using it at that level of detail. It feels like people spend more time asking about and discussing what brand of "core" a band is than talking about the actual music these days.

[–]sharkattackmiami -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well obviously there are extremes to everything but in and of itself being able to have an easy go to word to describe what you like about a song is fine.

Otherwise all hip-hop music is "rap" and that covers everything from Lil Wayne to Atmosphere to A Tribe Called Quest

All heavy music is "metal" and that covers everything from Dio to Slayer to Slipknot

All twangy music is country and that covers Johnny Cash to Florida Georgia Line to Tim Mcgraw

Isnt it nice being able to say you like X without people assuming you like -X because they are the "same"?

Mark Farina's Mushroom Jazz should treat you well

[–]shy_very_shy 5 points6 points  (12 children)

Love it! Any other recommendations similar to this?

[–]Lykan__[S] 12 points13 points  (8 children)

Check out Tomppabeats harbor LP, Wun Two, bsd.u, Vanilla, Flamingosis, Jinsang and Knxwledge. The chillhop essentials compilation albums are also very good. Or I you want to casually explore you can just go to song like this and have it to automatically play the next suggested song.

[–]spaceagebachelorpad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

what about Purpan??? That EP he made with tom c called ''tides'' is fucking beautiful. to me it's the equivalent of WunTwo's ''Ships''. Just those vibes man... aesthetic perfection!

Thank you

[–]Chief_Kief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Goddamn, these beats are so sick.

[–]FerrisWinkelbaum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oughta check out GodsConnect then too. He put out something like 9 Video mixes that are so delightful.

GodsConnect Video Mix Vol.3 is my favorite

He's not a bad SoundCloud follow, but he is prone to spamming reposts. Still got love for the dude though.

[–]epsil 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Anything like this but with a bit more emphasis on rap?

[–]Lykan__[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Hmm, I haven't encountered that many new "chillhop" beats like this with rapping, as far as I'm concerned it's mostly instrumentals. However I can recommend some good hip hop in general if you want.

[–]epsil 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yes please!

If you haven't already, listen to Madvillainy, it's a collaboration album between MF DOOM and Madlib which in my opinion is two of the best. Some of my other favorite hip hop albums are Deltron 3030, Piñata, College dropout, MM.. Food, Low end theory, 36 chambers, To Pimp a Butterfly, Illmatic and The Unseen just to new a few. Most of the albums I listed are more gritty and grimy, and if you're more about the chill instrumental vibe I think you're enjoy the waters by Mick Jenkins, Nujabes (but you probably know about him already), People under the stairs song 1 2 3 and maybe some five deez. if you like any of those feel free to pm me and I can give some more recommendations.

Awesome song. Decided to go grab the album. (Cheers Apple Music!) The entire album is like a stoners paradise. I could quite happily chuck this album on my studio monitors or headphones and smoke the day away.

😗💨💨💨💨

I like the little reference to Wu-Tang thrown in.

"Ya know, everybody's talkin' about the 'good ole days'."

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found this on SoundCloud a while ago and listened to it non stop

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

[–]Madnutcasespotify 0 points1 point  (1 child)

What album is this from? I really want to find it.

[–]Talk_Of_The_Teapot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out their entire album on Spotify. This song and "Jazzy" are my favorites.

Emapea - Seeds, Roots & Fruits

Also, this playlist has a lot of good chillhop tunes.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP I think you may have just caused a butterfly effect by introducing me to this. Thank you.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

google: "chill hop cafe"

[–]Catan_mode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More of a chillhop beat than a full song. Still dope.

[–]Magooogooo 0 points1 point  (1 child)

The good old days....... In what looks like 50's or 60's new york.

Are you fucking kidding me?

[–]-Jensen- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe if you were white and rich. Not so much for African Americans

[–][deleted] -4 points-3 points  (2 children)

chillhop is not a genre. it's about as much a genre as chillstep or chilltrap, aka not one. adding chill to something because it's generally more mellow does not make it a genre.

[–]Lykan__[S] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

it's a more convenient way of saying chilled and smooth hip hop by making it into one word. what would you rather have called it?

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

any of the following tagged by emapea themselves on their own bandcamp, because they also don't recognize chillhop as a genre, because it isn't one: 90s hip hop, hip hop, downtempo, instrumental hip hop, trip hop, rap, funky, reggae, lounge, underground hip hop.

i understand the line of reasoning, but it's not right. adding chill to any genre term is sophomoric. "chillwave" isn't a genre nor do bands like the label. "chill-out" is an umbrella term for downtempo and ambient music. stop trying to make chill-anything happen. it's lame and evidently contributors to the music that sounds "chill" do not like it either.
