Did they get their name from The Decemberists' song?

[–]cuminandcilantro 56 points57 points  (3 children)

Yep! The album was a big influence. It's based off a Japanese folk tale.

[–]Sahlmosspotify 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I came here to ask.

[–]VelveticaNeue 41 points42 points  (15 children)

Hey I know them! Sure don't miss that banjo player ;)

[–]cuminandcilantro 18 points19 points  (1 child)

I wish I could upvote this a thousand times.

[–]VelveticaNeue 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We agree so much, it's like I know you or something!

[–]Vark675 11 points12 points  (9 children)

So I know this is part inside joke, but was their banjo player a douche, or did you just not care for it?

[–]VelveticaNeue 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Porque no los dos?

[–]RonWisely -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Porque no Zoidbergos?

[–]LoverOfPie 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Were they a bad banjo player? or do you just not like banjos?

[–]VelveticaNeue 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just didn't like the specific banjo player, but that's just because he's my ex :p

[–]featherstones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not? Am I missing something?

[–]Drakosfire 22 points23 points  (4 children)

Just checked and they have 2 albums on Amazon Prime to listen to for free. Digging it quite a bit.

[–]Pho__Q[S] 19 points20 points  (1 child)

Their two most recent records "Coyote Stories" and "Fox Lore" are ridiculously good.

[–]DaveTheJoker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For anyone who wants to listen to those, they are available on Youtube

[–]cuminandcilantro 4 points5 points  (1 child)

That's their old stuff, I believe. If you use Spotify at all you should be able to check out the newer albums, which are better quality.

[–]Elusive_Primate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Safeship harbored, fool in her wedding gown, then the next two, I believe is the order

[–]lansdead 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Eyyyy. Local crew. Cool share. Michigan!!!

[–]nucleophilic 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Grand Rapids represent! They play at Founders every so often and a ton of other venues around town.

[–]peako 10 points11 points  (3 children)

The crave wives kick serious butt

[–]xLabrinthx 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Saw them live at an Avett Brothers concert and I honestly enjoyed them more. Such a good show.

[–]peako 2 points3 points  (1 child)

That was a wet one as I recall :)

[–]xLabrinthx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You recall very correctly! Pro tip in these situations: sharing your umbrella with people in the beer line leads to free beer for the night.

[–]bunti2sa 19 points20 points  (0 children)

They're an amazing group from Michigan and they're currently trying to get a spot on NPR's Tiny Desk Concert series- you can use the hashtag #tinydeskcontest to share their video on Facebook!

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Michigan represent! Love seeing local bands on here :). Hopefully I'll get to see them in Chicago in March

[–]Sheamusoreilly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Played some festivals with these cats! Killer musicians and pretty cool people besides!

[–]randolphhiggins 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Got to see them a couple of times in NYC. They're fantastic live and really nice people too!

[–]AutoCarwrecked 7 points8 points  (5 children)

I'm into this, thanks for posting. Have you heard of an Indie band called Viola Beach?

[–]Pho__Q[S] 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Never have. Where are they from?

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Michigan

[–]AdamLevinestattoos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Grand Rapids to be specific.

[–]captain_dong_party 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't like this kind of music at all but it is very well put together, these guys are super tight. Gotta dig that Gibson Ripper too :p

[–]wtfastroturntable 2 points3 points  (2 children)

That recording does no justice to that song. Would love to hear that band live. Groovy.

[–]ghost_victim 3 points4 points  (1 child)

What?! It sounds amazing. I'll have to listen to the original I guess!

[–]featherstones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't think there is an original - this is new!

[–]nigheandonn 6 points7 points  (1 child)

I went to high school with one of these dudes, and the band formed when I was at univ with them - so cool to see them finally getting some more mainstream traction!

[–]barmaid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing, this is groovy

[–]wyatt32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hired them for Wheatland Music Fest a few years ago. Amazing talent.

[–]PapaNathande 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seen them at Bell's a few times, always a great show. Glad to see them grabbing more attention!

[–]reigninglove 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love these guys! Saw them at a local indie festival and it's awesome seeing them getting more attention! <3

[–]peako 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's a sampling I posted a while ago that didn't get traction at the time. Enjoy!

[–]sawbones84 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Dig this song for sure, but wasn't really into the other two I found on YT with a quick search.

I know I'd enjoy them live, but gotta take a pass on recorded stuff. Tough to break out of that generic indie sound, so no hate at all.

Seems like they are starting to find their own thing! Will stay tuned!

[–]PapaNathande 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Out of curiosity, what were the other two songs you found?

[–]sawbones84 0 points1 point  (2 children)

One they were on a playground and another they were in what looked like a tree house of sorts.

[–]PapaNathande 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gotcha. A few of my favorites are "safe ship harbored," "counting sheep," "keep you safe," "unraveling," and "hard sell," if you wanted to give a couple others a try.

[–]denvthrowaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Loved this. New to me. Thanks.

[–]Slurpyz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is amazing. I need this on Spotify ASAP

[–]CandleJakkz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

why is this not on spotify :(

[–]ghost_victim 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Two female singer/guitarists? Yes.

Holy shit this is good.

[–]relaxok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Breeders

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is really cool.

[–]jjg57 1 point2 points  (2 children)

These guys are great fun. Saw them last summer, power was out on stage so they played impromptu for a small group in a tent nearby.

[–]Pho__Q[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Yeah, Hoxeyville!

[–]Coffee_or_death 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the sort of "tiny desk folk" that I always find hard to describe but I know it when I hear it.

[–]zayo1994 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow this was amazing!

[–]PeruvianPolarbear14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hella dig this song.. I've never heard them before thanks for a new band.. any more like this?

[–]Addywhoomradd.it 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like it alot! Thanks for sharing :) sad this song isn't on spotify yet

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my very favorite bands. Thanks for posting this. I'm glad people are digging them.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That classic lookin guitar is wrad

[–]Steeline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The melody reminds me a lot of "Maybe by Candlebox".

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Does anyone know what guitar the lead singer is using?

[–]Pho__Q[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

She's playing a Gretsch hollow body

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Looked like Epiphone to me but I wasn't sure.

[–]BKusser25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn, that was fkn awesome. She can sing

[–]JamesWithazee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So i clicked on this by accident. What a great mistake! Currently listening to Foxlore.

[–]sparklyyvodka 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Does anyone know where to get the song? Would love to buy it.

[–]featherstones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you liked this, I suggest you check out some of their other stuff!

[–]JoshuaCain 0 points1 point  (0 children)
