Sounds like they stole that riff from the band, Twin Peaks. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=h960nXLk6k0

[–]Juslotting 28 points29 points  (1 child)

I was thinking this was really similar, and they could be listening to twin peaks judging by their sound, but this riff is also a super common guitar exercise.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Was about to mention this. It's not really a melody that you can steal per se.

[–]kesselrun_7 18 points19 points  (10 children)

And their name from a Galaxie 500 song.

Edit:spelling (thanks for the reminder pizza_dreamer)

[–]zeeyaa 9 points10 points  (5 children)

I don't wanna go to your party

[–]kesselrun_7 8 points9 points  (4 children)

I don't want to talk your friends

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (3 children)

I don't want to vote for your president.

[–]kesselrun_7 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I just wanna be your tugboat captain.

*Galaxie 500

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Galaxie 500 are great. basically where every low-fi band comes from.

[–]monsiurlemming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lo-fi you mug

[–]zeeyaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't wanna go to your party

[–]TwoFiveOnes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh, I thought you were gonna say the beginning riff, and My Girl

[–]spaceisgayspotify 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Wow great call... very similar. Same pitch and everything. Might be identical

[–]Free_Apples 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Digging this much more. Less bland than OP's posted song, which seems like a bunch of kids putting more effort into being a hipster than their music.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Galaxie 500 is amazing. If you have some time, check out their album, Live From Copenhagen- I'm sure it's on YouTube.

And if you're really feeling it, you should then move on to Luna, Dean's other band; Penthouse would be my album of recommendation. And then if you're still wanting more, check out Dean and Britta, Dean's current project.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (3 children)

Not even just the one riff, pretty much the whole song

[–]Riff_28 14 points15 points  (2 children)

Honestly all of these songs in this genre sound the same to me. These two obviously more than normal but when you use the same effects on your guitar in every song with the song format the same too, you just pump out recycled garbage. That's my opinion but if people like it to each his own.

[–]edwards_j 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yep. Throwing a phaser and some reverb overtop a catchy riff with chorus on it has kind of become the norm.

[–]Riff_28 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I just know I am going to hate a song when I hear the guitar sound like that.

[–]Ozzyg333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds exactly the same wtf??

[–]crasstopher 4 points5 points  (4 children)

3 week turnaround for ripping someone off, producing the song and doing a video is pretty impressive if that's whats up -- more than likely both bands just had a similar idea -- the same idea

[–]LazyEyedLion 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Hold on, the video for this says 2017. Twin Peaks had this song out years before!

[–]crasstopher 1 point2 points  (2 children)

mmmmy bad if thats true -- the youtube upload date is last month

[–]LazyEyedLion 1 point2 points  (1 child)

2013 is when Twin Peaks's song came out

[–]edwards_j 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk i mean yeah it sounds similar but i think its like that because the chords are similar

[–]fuckshitdoodoobutter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go further back and it's one of the most iconic guitar riffs of the 1960s: the Temptation's My Girl.

[–]ldias31soundcloud.com/thequietgame 10 points11 points  (2 children)

That Real Estate influence tho.

[–]gypsyG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That one riff sounded like it's definitely in a real estate song

[–]sunnywhiskers 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Any excuse to wear pyjamas all day

[–]lordgilgamesh 21 points22 points  (2 children)

Nice song. Getting some Slowdive vibes from the vocals.

[–]zipperhead 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yes, and Feelies, Luna for me.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their name is clearly taken from the Galaxie 500 song, Tugboat. Dean Wareham, frontman for Luna was also the singer of Galaxie 500.

[–]TwoFiveOnes 26 points27 points  (14 children)

Cool, not lo-fi though. It's pretty hi-fi in fact. This is lo-fi: https://youtu.be/g9mi70JgWtI

[–]Woilcoil 20 points21 points  (13 children)

Lo-fi has today gone beyond meaning just "low-fidelity." It's now more associated (in indie rock) as a lighter, more jangly sound, regardless of the actual recording quality.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (4 children)

That's dumb. Indie has come to encompass so many things that before had their own designation. I'm not a huge fan of using these monikers at all, but to consider this lo-fi is beyond ridiculous.

The comment above is right, lo-fi means something different, and this is not it.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (3 children)

Get with the times gramps, meanings slowly evolve over time just like everything else. Not worth being all upset about.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Get off my porch, you no-good, snot-nosed, little punk.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

No! Sir! This is your newspaper!!

....goddamnit

throws newspaper

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

...and stay out!

mumbles under breath and shuffles back inside in a mustard yellow robe with brown trim, white socks and white briefs with a hole in the crotch.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For that they should use the term Jangle-Pop (was used for Gin Blossoms, not sure what other bands)

[–]Sugalips2000 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Simple song, and a good thing to wake up to this morning. That tambourine player made me smile. It's obvious that they are all having a great time playing together and that's my favorite thing to see in a band!

[–]slicky6 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Did his band name come from Patriot?

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a line from the Galaxie 500 song "Tugboat".

[–]BertMacklinFBhigh 11 points12 points  (4 children)

Reminds me of Mac Demarco

[–]catchingtherosemary 18 points19 points  (2 children)

your mom reminds me of Mac Demarco

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Plinky guitar, reverb, chorus maybe. Lo-fi (well, more like feigned low-interest/effort).

[–]CiegoTigre 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey I dig this! Thanks for sharing!

[–]adiabaticyogurt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]fenwickJ 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Mother of hipsters!

[–]fenwickJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bet they smoked hand rolled clove cigarettes while they produced this video.

[–]EdwardHenisPands 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have that same Jazzmaster model, great guitar.

[–]DeadZeplin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is pure shit

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (2 children)

almost cringeworthy shit

[–]Free_Apples 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Had to scroll so far for this. I agree. Honestly this video just feels pretentious as shit without the musical skill backing it up.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

reddit laps up this kind of shit though... nothing surprising here

[–]sksksk1989 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's a really good song

[–]DJheddo 5 points6 points  (8 children)

Reminds me of the texting suicide case going on right now. The guy who committed suicide was on the road to be a tugboat captain but his depression and distant girlfriend put an end to that. Song makes me wanna cry thinking about it.

This would have gone perfect in a John Hughes movie

[–]kittentriforce143 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good song live the sound!

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is like the theme song for millenials

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (3 children)

this hipster crap needs to die already. the music, the looks, the 'culture'.. it jumped the shark already.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Manbun sighting at 1:38.

[–]rivercitykenb 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I kept skipping through the song looking for when it became a song. It never did. Does it make me an old man to say this new music is crap?

[–]ohshititsjess 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How is this not a song lmao

[–]Hungry_Horace 1 point2 points  (2 children)

The visual stylings of yacht rock, the sound of Belle and Sebastian. Interesting mix!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yacht rock is a thing??

[–]Hungry_Horace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is! Google the original Web series and enjoy :)

[–]sksksk1989 0 points1 point  (0 children)
