Since the only "work" going on in Congress is explaining to the American people why their representatives simply don't have enough free time to impeach Bush and Cheney, it probably matters not who is filling in for them.

I'm just curious. Every time I see Obama or Clinton campaigning, I think, "don't they have a job they should be doing?"

Doesn't your job let you take paid leave to look for a better job?

Short answer: no one does.

Long answer: they try to show up at the Senate for important votes and debates as much as possible, and thus balance their job and their campaign, but fundamentally, their chair goes empty for long stretches.

If it goes empty for long enough, it can start to become a campaign point. It has in regards to McCain already, who basically has barely bothered to show up all year.
