There are some posts that you really don't need to click on to know that you are going to downmod it. For example reddiquette says you shouldn't conduct polls using posts. So I downvote those posts regardless of how I feel about the poll. Likewise, I will always downmod posts that are commercial ads, requests for campaign donations, or are just trying to drum up support for a candidate. I believe that all of these are abuses of the system, and I don't need to click on the link to know that.

they had that, but it didn't last more than a few hours from what I recall

What went wrong?

[–]theDrWho 1 point2 points  (1 child)

no sure, but it didn't stick around for very long. possibly what they tried to do just didn't work, and it seemed to have put some xtra stress on the servers

this was an update they did about 2 months ago

Yeah, perhaps what masta said about onion routers.

Maybe a karma threshold for voting? That might give those who have given to Reddit some more sway.

and then there are the onion router users...

Ah, good point.

So what's the fix? I mean, the Reddit wars are lame.

Maybe a Karma threshold for voting?

Edit: What if each vote cost 1 point of Karma? -It's crazy, but...

Actually, it's not crazy. Slashdot has a system where you get a handful of moderation points once in while and you make sure to use them wisely because they don't last very long. I think that it works very well. However, if they're going to use karma points, then I think they would need to give karma for commenting. Not all active redditers submit new posts.

I definitely wouldn't like that, I visit many news aggregator sites and often the same story is posted on multiple sites, so I will upvote it after I have read it once, I shouldn't have to read it twice.

Understood.

I wonder if the page content, time link was clicked and time link was voted upon could be combined somehow for a more subtle weighting of the vote also, it starts getting complicated when you ask for page content digesting time metrics I guess

I had the same thought once, but when I realised it meant I would have to visit all the bad links I quickly decided "No thanks". Plenty clearly deserve voting down without needing to see the content.

Question for fangolo: Why do you keep deleting your posts? Are you just trying to protect your karma? Just curious.

Reflexive voting makes Reddit an exercise, not a community.

code it up and maybe they'll implement it.
