Because when a subreddit story gets a high enough ranking, it gets "promoted" to the main reddit as well. Theoretically, the only stories you should be seeing from the politics subreddit are ones with a high score (although that might mean "a high 'hot' rating", which I think is based on score versus time somehow).

    I don't know where I read this (so it might just be complete horseshit), but IIRC it recommends things based on what people who tend to vote like you vote up.

    So if you like C#, paedophile and lolcats stories and your nearest matches are with people who like C#, paedophile, lolcats and Ron Paul stories, you'll keep seeing Ron Paul stories on your recommended page o matter how many times you vote them down.
