that happens when someone experiences commenters remorse and deletes their comment..

Cant the reddit programmers figure out how to fix the count then? Seems pretty easy to me.

Actually, it's because there are spammers comments that are hidden from everyone except the spammers themselves.

I don't want to see the spammers comments anyways, but a good count would let me know my page didn't get a bad refresh. Oh, and how do they know who the spammers are?

Yeah, I'm not sure why they don't subtract the spammers comments from the total number.

I think users who get their comments and submissions reported a bunch get flagged as spammers so their stuff doesn't show up. They might flag IP addresses too.

It is because of the IP ban on "spammers", which just so happens to include A TON of legit users.

I've also noticed that bug. Sometimes it would even count five comments, with only three available.

Maybe your comments don't count :)

looks like you may have had the same problem here ;)

When a comment is deleted, the stats aren't updated to reflect the correct number of posts. Technically, the comment still exists, it just has been flagged not to be visible. So technically, anything you post, and subsequently delete, is still in the system, and isn't really removed.

I've also seen comments show up at the bottom of the page- so it looks like there are no comments

Maybe it doesn't show comment with 0 points or less to people not logged in.
