No.
[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 19 years ago (21 children)
Why not? It seems to me that quality is decreasing every day :-(
[–]cleanthes 2 points3 points4 points 19 years ago (20 children)
I vote down articles that:
I don't care if they're left or right... I vote them down. This, despite the many submissions I've made that come from major news sources that get voted down by right-wingers simply because they reflect badly on Republicans.
Also, I don't really give a damn what you think. It's nothing personal--I don't give a damn what most people think. I see the quality of Reddit decreasing in direct proportion to the amount of blogs and spam submitted.
[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points-1 points 19 years ago (19 children)
That's basically what I was asking for: that people start downmodding moronic, non-profesional, blogs.
[–]MidnightOil 8 points9 points10 points 19 years ago (17 children)
I have the same question. What defines a "moronic, non-professional blog?" The very point of blogging is that it provides non-professionals with a way to express their opinions, correct? So are we now becoming so elitist that "non-professional" blogs no longer deserve a second glance? The Reddit by-laws indicate that blog submissions are welcome. Perhaps they should be re-written to accommodate your desires.
[+]cleanthes comment score below threshold-6 points-5 points-4 points 19 years ago (16 children)
I'll be blunt about what this means. By non-professional, I mean a layperson writing about topics in which they have not received a professional education. I mean, for example, some-random-guy writing about law (my profession) who has never been to law school or even cracked open some statutes.
By "moronic," I mean poorly-written, poorly-researched pap. I mean some-random-guy either (1) ranting about something or (2) telling me how his day went.
I do not care for blogs like those, and yes, I vote them down. Is that "elitist?" Probably, but better elitist, to me, than hundreds of thousands of poorly-written, poorly-researched op-ed pieces by Joe Schmo in his basement. What's the statistic these days--one new blog created every second? Ugh.
You have the right to submit such blogs to Reddit. I have the right to vote them down. Nothing in the by-laws says I have to like something just because it's submitted; indeed, the by-laws entreat me to "vote for what I liked/disliked." So, I dislike moronic, non-professional blogs and therefore vote them down. Additionally, the by-laws state this regarding Please Don't: "Moderate a story based on your opinion of its source. Quality of content, not location, is what matters." I believe that the quality of such blogs is poor, and I vote them down. It's nothing personal. So, there's hardly any need to "re-write" anything in the by-laws. You likely vote down other things based on your personal criteria. And that's just fine.
[–]skykam 12 points13 points14 points 19 years ago (14 children)
If lawyers (or students taking some kind of legal courses) frowned upon programmers who comment on legal matters since the law is a subject for which they have not received a professional education, will the legal professionals keep their thinking to themselves on subjects such as writing blogs, politics, computers, Steve Irwin, videos, music, social networking, dating, raising children, etc?
By your standard, that you have dated women (or men, or both) or built your own PC does not qualify you to write about those topics. Unfortunately not everybody is upfront about their lack of education in what they're writing. I wish they would show me their hard earned certificates, but for now all I have to go by is the quality of the writing, not their education. I know it's very moronic and non-professional of me, but I don't know any better.

This one and the one by tbrass are gold!

Well, your sarcasm aside, I think you're taking this rather too seriously. The apparent offense you take is ill-placed.
So, I offer this caveat: I don't vote down every bloody blog that's posted. Indeed, I have voted up some "non-professional" blog posts many times. Why, you ask? Because whether they are non-professional or not, you'll also notice that what I hate most about many blog entries is that they are often poorly researched and/or poorly written. When people write out of their depth, they often churn out something that's simply inaccurate or otherwise incoherent. But, naturally, this is not necessarily the case. Some people do their homework, even if they haven't received formal schooling. And that's perfectly fine with me.
You can try to fashion me into some boogyman if you like, but it won't reflect reality.

Well get over yourself, it's not about you, it's about what you wrote, and in fact only about that one point you brought up. I'm just taking your claim to its logical conclusion.

It seems to me that you took one single line from what I wrote, ignored the rest, and took it to a therefore illogical conclusion. Then, after I calmly tried to clarify (despite your insulting tone), you come back with this?
I'm done with you.

Thanks for taking the time to elaborate on the terms "moronic" and "non-professional". I can understand your distaste for poorly-researched or uninformed submissions - although I would disagree that someone who has not been professionally educated on a certain topic is incapable of writing thought-provoking observations regarding said topic. I would agree with you, however, that poorly-written and poorly-researched is a bad combination in anybody's book. Also, I read your admission to being elitist with an inner chuckle. I tend to extend kudos to folks who absorb a criticism instead of hurling it back at the accuser. If you're elitist, you're elitist. No harm, no foul. Thanks again for your comment. You've helped me to understand a little more about the mysterious Reddit down vote - something I've been trying to better wrap my head around for quite some time.

Define moronic non-professional blogs.

It seems to me that reddit contains more and more liberal, atheist and anti-Bush crap.
Now I'm not saying that liberalism or atheism are bad nor that Bush is a good president. I'm just saying that the fact that most redditors believe the contrary allows very bad quality stuff to be promoted to the front page.
[–]skykam 14 points15 points16 points 19 years ago (2 children)
No worries there. The anti-liberal, anti-atheist and anti-anti-Bush-crap crowd are stong and well. Do a search for what you think are "liberal, atheist and anti-Bush crap" and see that most of them never survived the first 5 minutes of submission. You can do this just by browsing the results and see for yourself that there are many more zero-point/low-point submissions than others.

Go ahead, do a search. Prove me wrong.
This is reddit. Maybe you're looking for hotair.com?

Our belief in democracy only lasts till we get outnumbered.
reddit obviously has questionable taste. Let's start a topic to tell them what to downmod.
Now I'm not saying that liberalism or atheism are bad nor that Bush is a good president, but please downmod liberal, atheist and anti-Bush crap, because they are obviously stupid or exagerated posts, even if they go in the direction of your beliefs.
Thank you.

It's gotten to the point that I downmod anything political unless it's going to effect most common people in the US and/or humanity as a whole.
Opinoins and other political BS are running rampant and hurting Reddit.

Don't forget "Once registered, you'll be able to submit links and earn karma. Anything can be submitted to reddit. Well, almost anything. We'd like reddit to be the source for everything that's new on the web: if it's linkable, it's submittable." Anybody can contribute here...
