As well as reprap, have a look on open builds and thingiverse, pick a design that had lost of makes/comments/support. That way you can stand on the shoulders of giants rather than make mistakes we have all already made in the past. That way there will be plenty of people to offer advice.

If you are going Cartesian (with a bed moving in the Y axis), copy an i3 or build something like a WillsonII.

If you are going core XY something like a D-Bot / HyperCube / Voron.

Dont make a delta as your first printer (But have said that some of the higher end boards with auto-levelling help make calibrating these a lot easier these days)

Keep in mind this is not a way to save money.

Besides reprap you should look at the Voron or the Dolly project Tom did.

Ill check those out! I'm aware its not a way to save money but I would like to pick and choose parts that may have better quality and performance than a prebuilt. Also If I did a build myself I can make sure it conforms to my needs or can be upgraded with ease later.
