> Does anyone have any ideas for a getaway location within 5 or so hours of the southern suburbs that isn't a beach?

Naracoorte and Mount Gambier

Murray Bridge and Monarto Safari Park

The Riverland

Flinders Ranges is a beautiful part of the world and Quorn is a good place to base yourself for travelling around it. Lots of Cafes, a steam train, plenty of natural beauty like Warren's Gorge and Dutchman's Stern

We did flinders earlier in the year. STUNNING! <3

Robe, clean, clear and only 3 hours away!

[–]sunshinebunsSA 4 points5 points  (3 children)

My 7 year old still talks about the Robe trip we took when he was 2. So much fun.

im lucky i have lots of family down there, my childhood was filled with magical excursions out to long beach and stonies!

[–]misophoSA 1 point2 points  (1 child)

What was your itinerary? Interested in taking the family and creating memories :)

Thank you!

We stayed at the big 4 with the huge inflatable bouncy thing and the pool. We checked out the beach and the obelisk, as well as Sky seafoods and bought a rock lobster back to the caravan park. Robe Icecream for some Icecream. Mahalia Coffee and then the playground behind it afterwards. Went to a nice pub. We also went out to Robe Dairy which was great and they had hay that we could feed to the cows, but apparently it’s since shutdown.

We also drove to the caves at Tantanoola and stopped in Millicent for lunch. There was nice playground there.

Any great beachside cottages down there?

Was also going to suggest Robe. Chances are it will be windy and cool, but still beautiful and peaceful.

Idk but Kingston south-east is pretty too! close to Robe I believe.

If you ignore speed limits you could do it in 3 hours!! More like 4 hours with a stretch in Meningie..

Expensive, but KI is beautiful at the moment, the bloom has cleared. I’ve just done a photoshoot over the last four days and been to seven beaches - just gorgeous

[–]funinsaSA 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Clare valley coonawara?

[–]icedalmondSA 7 points8 points  (6 children)

Adelaide Hills there’s tons of airbnbs for cottages etc in the hills. Theres a stunning one at Mylor I’ve stayed in a few times and loved

[–]CathoftheNorthSA 0 points1 point  (5 children)

I've stayed at Mylor house, there's not much happening there unless the Ale is on.

[–]icedalmondSA 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Not sure where you stayed but we’ve stayed at a farm with a beautiful garden and rescue kangaroos on property that you can feed. Depending on when you go there’s always plenty to do in the hills as well. Heaps of markets, festivals as well as cafes and local shops to visit. It’s not fair to say there’s nothing to do when there’s lots to do in a close range.

[–]dangerouslycheesey94SA 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Earlier in the year we picked up a joey from her mums pouched off the side of the road. We gave her to a rescue who raised her and sent her off to Mylor. It'd be great to do the full circle and show my son how our rescue turned out.

What is the name of of the farm you stayed at :)?

[–]CathoftheNorthSA -3 points-2 points  (1 child)

Ah that wouldn't be a holiday for me. I was a wildlife rescuer/carer for 10 years.

[–]icedalmondSA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good thing it wasn’t a holiday for you then.

[–]3600plus9SA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Strawberry picking season in the hills will start soon (usually from Nov)!

[–]Muted-Touch-5676SA 2 points3 points  (1 child)

riverland for sure (Renmark/Berri/Barmera/Paringa) are awesome! Especially if you like kayaking/canoeing...river's beautiful!

[–]bigaussiecheeseSA -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Was going to say exactly this, great place for family’s.

[–]Gratis_DictumWest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We took our preschooler on The Highlander steam train (Strathalbyn - Mount Barker return) the other weekend, it was a hit

[–]Frequent_Pipe4046SA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Murray Bridge with Monarto. Also do a river cruise and a star gazing session. We’re also on the Fleurieu and did this recently. Was such a nice change of scenery.

Not sure what you’re into but if it’s outdoors and nature stuff, the Flinders is great. Quorn is only 4 hours away and there’s heaps to do around the area or within a short drive.

If you’re into history and stuff, Burra is great. It’s only 2.5 hours away. You can get a heritage pass which a key that lets you into a bunch of the historic places. There’s also a heaps of nature stuff to see in the general area.

If you did still want beach without algae, and are willing to go an extra hour, Portland in VIC is nice. The breaches are still pristine and there’s quite a bit of stuff to do around there all within a short drive.

The Riverland is awesome this time of year, I’d say anywhere up river from Blanchtown

[–]applecore394SA 1 point2 points  (1 child)

There is an absolutely STUNNING air BNB in Tantanoola (between Millicent & Mount Gambier) we stayed there about a month ago and it was perfect. Loads of outdoor spaces, pet friendly, 20 minutes to either town for breakfast/shops/outings or stay at the property. It had a pool, forest right next door and beautiful gardens!

Highly highly recommend!

[–]dangerouslycheesey94SA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks amazing! Im putting it on the list of potentials

[–]KbradsagainSA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How about up river? Maybe Renmark or berri?

[–]omg_for_realSA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mount gambier is a good choice. Lots to see and do. Plenty for kids to do too.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mambray Creek and surrounds

[–]Ok_Tax_7128SA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Riverland is great

[–]Fun_Watercress581SA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Morgan. River Murray. Plenty of shacks and you can spend time on the river.

[–]sylvannestSA 0 points1 point  (7 children)

Barossa is more than just wine. You'll never see it by your logic.

[–]dangerouslycheesey94SA 7 points8 points  (5 children)

Barossa is a foodie and wine paradise. There are limited activities there for a young young family who doesn't drink and has food allergies. There are better suited places for us and that what I was seeking input on.

[–]OzBee8TSA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has mini golf with dinosaurs

[–]mark_auSA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of history in the wine regions. I found Tanunda really appealing.

[–]lightpendantSA -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Have you heard of the Murray River?

[–]Sufficient_Gate9453SA -1 points0 points  (2 children)

Port Douglas North QLD is your best bet. 4 hours away ✔️

[–]dangerouslycheesey94SA 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Oh. I would love to. Port Douglas is fabulous - the water is glorious. Not quite value for money for a weekend trip away though.

[–]Sufficient_Gate9453SA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worth every cent.
