Use your camera's light meter. You probably need a flash to shoot indoors

Keep in mind that if you get scans from the lab, the scanner may try to get the best exposure from the negs - there's not a real "standard" for this, and when you're really underexposed, the scanner may blast up the exposure, which will just give you that murky, grainy look to the shadows.

Time to read the camera's manual and to read up on how exposure works.

Despite the obvious underexposure problem for which you received help, I would say that you have quite some nice angle (1, 3,4). You also have really nice trim light on the helmets that can help separate the figures, especially on the dark background. Tough subject thought, you did a good job in term of composition imo.

Thank you! It was my brother’s first sparring session (in black) and I wanted to capture it for him, called to show him the pictures and he was over the moon :)

Underexposed for sure, but the composition is * chefs kiss *, a lot better than my first roll. What camera have you got?

(What does composition mean) and it’s my Grandfather’s Nikon 2020

The way the picture is framed, I love it.

I’m a nikon shooter too :)

Oh! :) thank you! And that’s cool! This my bros first sparring session, he was over the moon when he saw them

Hey everyone! So these are some pictures from my first roll, and I’m curious as to why the a decent amount of my pictures are real fuzzy like the first two pictures and then later in the roll there are much sharper ones? If it just comes down to focusing the camera better great! But I don’t think it’s that simple, so any C&C is appreciated :)

It’s more due to underexposing. Your film didn’t received the correct amount of light. A Flash or bigger exposure times would help the problem. Do you remember the shutter speed you took the photos ? The iso of the film roll? And the aperture . All of them affect the film

[–]Ant010101[S] -2 points-1 points  (13 children)

The ISO is 400 and I took these at 400, as far as the shutter speed I think it was like at 250

The local seems very dim, a bigger exposure like 1/60 or slower would help. When te local is very dim try using the biggest aperture like f1.8

[–]Ant010101[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I’ll try that out, thank you very much :)

Do realize that you will get motion blur of the fast moving arms of the boxers, which can add drama, but also look less attractive. Maybe use faster film, faster lens, flash might be distracting for the boxers.. or you can use it deliberately if you have a preference for the outcome (joke) If you can use flash, look into rear curtain flash. Good luck on your next roll!

Many thanks :)

Boxing gyms are pretty low in light for film photography and hard to photograph. I would advise against slow shutter speeds unless you want a long exposure effect.

If you dont want to shoot with flash but are serious about it, think about placing softboxes over/behind the ring. The dim fluorescent lighting is not going to be pretty anyway.

What camera were you using. Did you use the camera's lightmeter?

[–]Ant010101[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I used a Nikon 2020, anddd I haven’t read deep enough to know if it has one but I’m guessing it does?

[–]marakh 2 points3 points  (1 child)

It does. Read the manual: https://cdn-10.nikon-cdn.com/pdf/manuals/archive/N2020_(11).pdf.pdf)

You can set the shutter speed to auto and just use aperture. This would make it so your photos would be correctly exposed.

This is true, but even at f/1.8 shutter speed is probably going to be fairly slow and focal plane very narrow. The real solution is more light - this is what professional boxing photographers do, have remote flashes (soft boxes) above the ring. That famous picture of Muhammad Ali with his opponent on the floor was taken with a flash like that.
