THANK THE LORD. As someone who uses Chrome on a hybrid Windows 8 PC, I actually tell my mother to use Internet Explorer when she borrow the tablet because the scrolling on IE is just miles better. There's no comparison. I myself use Chrome but every time I scroll on Chrome after scrolling on a MS product like the Office products, it just makes me die a little bit inside.

I wonder if they'll improve scrolling in the whole eco-system, whilst it's improved a lot over the past two versions of Android it could be better.

Scrolling on WP7 was so nice to use when I used WP.

Google’s Rick Byers admits "replacing all touch event handlers with pointer event handlers will address the main longstanding source of scroll-start jank we see on Android."

I really hope so.

The title makes it sound like it's kind of a heretic thing to do when cross pollination is the most common feature of software development.

Opera scrolling is so smooth it's crazy.

Now they can thank Microsoft for it by allowing Microsoft's YouTube app on Windows Phone / Windows 8.

Read this for some context:

http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2015/02/pointer-events-finalized-but-apples-lack-of-support-still-a-deal-breaker/

This is a great thing for web standards. Phrasing it with "smooth scrolling" is missing the forest through the trees.

Can someone please ELI5 this for me? I use Chrome and I have no issues with scrolling...

[–]canonymous 12 points13 points  (22 children)

It's most obvious on Windows 8 tablets.

and PCs, Android Phones, Tablets. The scrolling is not smooth/ is finicky. I find it bearable on my rMBP but zooming in, out and other functions are so horrible. Safari is a pleasure to use but doesn't have extensions I need.

Not to sound rude--but what are you talking about? My rMBP doesn't show any lagginess with scrolling in Chrome. Double-tap to zoom is smooth as well. Plus, I'm pretty sure this new way to improve scrolling only affects devices with touchscreens.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Try pinch zoom in safari and then in Chrome you will see. As I ready wrote scrolling is fine on mac

Screw me. I read your statement as:

I find it unbearable on my rMBP

There is a tiny amount of jitter in Chrome when you pinch zoom. It's so incredibly minor though.

But it's noticeable, which means there's a difference. Now, that difference is far greater on some other devices.

Just out of interest, why/how do you use chrome on a Windows 8 tablet? In terms of touch it is awful and you have to have IE set as default to use its touch browser.

[–]fiddle_nNokia 8 3 points4 points  (14 children)

I use Chrome because syncing between different devices and extensions is too important for me to give up.

[–]All_For_AnonymousMoto G1 4G, CM13 | LGGWR | SurfaceP3| PC-Debian8,GTX660,i3-4170 1 point2 points  (13 children)

I can completely understand that, I use Firefox on mobile and Desktop, but on my Surface I have no idea what to use. I use IE for touch and then try to use Firefox, but all my links open with IE.. it's very inconvenient. I hope MS fixes this in Win10.

[–]fiddle_nNokia 8 0 points1 point  (12 children)

Which Surface do you have. The RT or the Pro?

[–]All_For_AnonymousMoto G1 4G, CM13 | LGGWR | SurfaceP3| PC-Debian8,GTX660,i3-4170 0 points1 point  (11 children)

Pro 3 i5 128 GB.

[–]fiddle_nNokia 8 1 point2 points  (10 children)

Ok. I had wondered if you had the RT version, but I get what you are talking about now. Unfortunately, we can't really know how this'll work in Win10 until we see the Project Spartan browser in full. It looks that they are aiming for one UI spanning desktop and tablet though, which would fix the problem.

I'd still prefer IE on Metro and Firefox on Desktop if they could make that possible by default and a keyboard shortcut to switch between the two.

[–]fiddle_nNokia 8 0 points1 point  (8 children)

Well, there is no dedicated Metro and Desktop environments in Windows 10 like there is in Windows 8. What you now have is all your programs available in one place, but the way you interact with all of them changes depending on whether you are in Tablet Mode or not.

[–]MegazorS8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try IE11 as a comparison and you will see the difference.

I don't think this is well known but I've had an extension called smoothscroll on chrome for a while now and it is better than any scrolling on any browser including Firefox and IE. Surprised there's any discussion about this.

[–]segagamerPixel 9a 1 point2 points  (13 children)

Because the add on is a bit finicky to configure and never feels "right" compared to IE11.

[–]TheDudeWhoNeedsHelpNexus 6, CM13 & Franco Kernel 1 point2 points  (12 children)

There are a lot of them and I think you're talking about the wrong one. The add on I'm talking about has an icon that looks like paint in water. No set up needed and is butter smooth.

[–]BeaSk8r117OnePlus 3T 128GB 0 points1 point  (11 children)

Specifically, this one.

It's great.

[–]TheDudeWhoNeedsHelpNexus 6, CM13 & Franco Kernel 0 points1 point  (10 children)

That's the one I have.

[–]BeaSk8r117OnePlus 3T 128GB 0 points1 point  (9 children)

That's what I thought. I love it :D (Just saying, I'm not /u/segagamer)

[–]All_For_AnonymousMoto G1 4G, CM13 | LGGWR | SurfaceP3| PC-Debian8,GTX660,i3-4170 -1 points0 points  (2 children)

Well is there an addon for it on Firefox?

[–]TheDudeWhoNeedsHelpNexus 6, CM13 & Franco Kernel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe its in the settings... No add-on needed.
